Aww, girl, that makes me so happy to hear! Haha yeah, Paul’s kind of the expected answer though.

Thank you! I’m definitely looking forward to the big victory of publication after years of hard work!

I LOVED hearing more about these awesome characters! I mean I haven’t heard too much about them yet and I was like WOW! Alana sounds absolutely amazing, I liked her instantly, and a reindeer shepherdess? That has got to be the best job in the universe! It’s also just so sweet, her sisterly friendship with Caira, (she was going to be Deek’s love interest!? Just the thought of Deek having a love interest is such a funny/sweet thought in a good weird way:) Alana sounds like an awesomely fun character:)
I love Ellis and Jestin so much too! I felt so sad for Ellis, but then it is so sweet how he cares about Caira and Deek like his own children. The very thought of him and Caira pouring over books made me smile:) And I didn’t think Jestin’s description was choppy at all really, he sounds so clever and awesome!:D

Thank you! Honestly, autumn & winter are two of my favorite seasons, so I just included them as the primary seasons for Aldova. And yes, you can definitely go there, as long as you have a portal, a sword, and a very warm cloak. Oh, and a map–you might get lost, because it’s pretty huge.

Aw, thanks! *bows* Writing always has two sides, where it’s calming but stressful, and where you’re best friends with your characters and sometimes enemies XD I’ve had to fight with my characters a few times to get them to cooperate with me. I really should stop telling them what happens… *shakes head* That means so much to hear, thank you!! And you’re right–when I look into publishing, I shouldn’t get discouraged if it gets turned down, especially because a lot of famous ones were as well. That means the absolute world to hear, and I promise I believe the very same thing for The Snow Warrior! 😉

Haha, there’s another spoiler-lover out there? *high fives* Same. I like knowing what happens, and also have a tendency to spoil things for other people (like my book) XD

Thank you!! I’m glad you liked them, especially since I need to get better at writing character summaries… *sighs* Alana is definitely one of my favorites, and thank you for saying that! I thought her being a reindeer shepherdess helped her stand out more, and yes, I love the sisterly relationship between her and Caira, because Alana is like the sister Caira never had. And YES, she was going to be Deek’s love interest, which… is a scary thought XD It wasn’t going to be as prominent as Caira and Newton’s romance, and mostly just a minor thing, but then I scrapped it, because it just felt less natural. Romance doesn’t fit Deek at all, so he’s just fine by himself XD Caira does tease him about Alana, though, but Deek always objects to having any romantic interest. Alana’s definitely a fun/bubbly/chaotic character to write.

I know, Ellis has a bittersweet story that is sad, but he and Arya do end up having happy endings because, with Caira and Deek, they become like a little family:) Yes, I love the scenes between Ellis and Caira because they have similar personalities and definitely act like a father-daughter:) Thanks for saying that! Jestin’s fairly new (I’m not sure if I’ll even keep his name) but that’s what I have so far. He’s more of a side character, mostly, but does end up proving to make useful inventions that help Caira and her friends along their journey.

                *Returns two days later*
ALDOVA IS AMAZING!!!!!!! I LOVE IT SOOO MUCH! THE WORD AWESOME IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!:D
                *Calms down*
*Tucks sword, cloak, and map in corner and makes note to self to go back as soon as possible*.

Alright, where was I? I mean Aldova is so amazing, I especially love the cherry trees and forests:)
Ikr? I can’t tell my characters too much or they’ll go on strike XD Not that they like cooperating anyway. And not a lot of famous went through rejections… ALL of them did. Every single one. Leo Tolstoy went through 122 rejections before War and Peace was accepted and now it’s a global classic!

Haha yes, Deek having a love interest is a pretty scary thought XD But a really cute thought at the same time:) But yeah, I understand where Deek isn’t the love interest type, (I’ve had to scrap a few potential romances in TSW myself. I mean at one point Anton was going to be Lila’s love interest, but it was just too odd. Plus I think I only have enough room in the novel for one main love interest subplot). And that’s such a sweet/funny concept of Deek teasing Caira and Caira teasing Deek. Those guys are so awesome:)
Aww, I love the father/daughter relationship with Caira and Ellis soooooo much! It’s so sweet and awesome at the same time:) Jestin too, is just so cool. I love inventory-type characters and he sounds like a completely incredible one:D

                  @Abigail-m

*gasps* THANK YOU so much!!! I’ve been there many times *dusts the snow off of cloak sleeves* and it’s quite an experience. And it’s a good thing you brought a cloak! It can get pretty chilly:) But thank you! I was a little nervous about building my world because I wasn’t sure if it sounded boring or uninteresting. I know I need to outline it a bit more, but that means a lot that you like it! Setting is very important for books:) And thanks! I love cherry trees, which is why I included so many, and definitely wintry forests! Wow, 122 rejections? That’s very impressive he didn’t give up after that. And that’s such an encouragement to me to read, because I’ve tried mentally preparing myself for Fortitude getting rejected so that I won’t be crushed when/if it happens. So thank you!:)

*nervous chuckle* Yeah, I don’t think it felt right for Deek to… fall in love? It just felt strange and very unlike him, so I just scrapped it and decided that Deek is better by himself. And Alana, too. Besides, the primary romance is C & N, so I didn’t want to shift the focus on a side-romance and confuse the reader. (Wait, Anton was Lila’s love interest at one point? Oh my goodness, that sounds so sweet! But I get it if it doesn’t fit–that’s what I had to do with Deek and Alana.) Haha, yeah, I love Caira and Deek’s interactions. They’re super close, but they still bicker and tease each other a lot:)

And thank you! Since Caira really misses having her parents, it only makes sense for the professors to become those figures in her life (and for Caira to become their daughter, in a way). And yes, her relationship with Ellis is very sweet, and they have some really deep heart-to-heart talks that is very father-daughter-ly. Thank you! I like the inventor-y type characters, too, and while he isn’t a main character, Jestin does have a crucial role later in the story. I’ll try to build more on his character:) But thanks for saying all of those things! You’re the best at giving encouragement!:D

Like it? I LOVED Aldova! And I agree, setting IS very important for books. Even Tolkien loved detailing his settings as much as he could. Birch Woods is going to need a lot more, but at least I have got most of the basic/important things written out:)
Yeah, I can see where Deek isn’t the type to really fall in love. And that’s true as well that more than one primary romance might confuse readers, (another reason why Anton/Lila didn’t really work out). But what’s strange is that Mejia in general isn’t the type to fall in love whereas Lila is someone who definitely would. Hmm *scratches head* I don’t remember why I gave Mejia a love interest instead of Lila. But so far it’s worked out pretty well I think, (well, sort of XD ).
And I just LOVE Caira and Deek’s interactions:) It always makes me smile, I mean they are so cute/funny in their brotherly/sisterly way:) And Ellis sounds so deep and sweet at the same time, and Jestin is so awesome too… ah, girl, all these characters are SO INCREDIBLE!!!:D 😀 😀

Aw, thanks!! That means a lot to hear:) Yes, I love Tolkien’s world building (though I haven’t detailed Aldova quite as much as he detailed Middle-Earth XD). And I think you’re doing an excellent job with Birch Woods! I have a very beautiful picture of it in my head, and personally, I think it’s a very interesting setting for a story! And it has so much potential:)

Yep, I agree. I think that makes the romance more interesting, though, that Mejia isn’t typically the type of character to fall in love. That makes it more special (and adds to her character) when she does:) That’s kind of how Newton is–I don’t think he ever gave romance much thought before he starting falling for Caira. I think it’s worked out great for Mejia/Filip! I mean, it sounds like one of those romances that I actually enjoy reading about (most of the time, it’s hard for me to ship characters), so you’re doing an excellent job:) And thank you! In the beginning, Caira and Deek act more lighthearted and like typical siblings with each other, but after they go through so many hardships together, they start getting closer and depending on each other heavily. They just couldn’t be without each other which is why I decided not to kill Deek like I had originally planned. Aw, that means SO MUCH to hear you say!! 😀 😀 I mean, I honestly never thought somebody would like my story/characters so much!! And it’s especially good to know since I’m writing my first novel. That’s a huge encouragement:)

Not to worry–I got your post in my notifications:) And yes, of course! I think it makes the romance more interesting that, even though they’re both fine on their own, they still fall in love. That adds a lot of depth and even more adorable-ness to it! I’m glad I was helpful–I just love the way you’ve written it!! I mean, this story is the absolute best!! 😀

And thank you! I try hard to put depth and dynamic into Caira and Deek’s relationship, and… *sniffles* yes, unfortunately, Deek was originally going to die. It was going to be in the final arc of the last book, and he was going to sacrifice himself for Caira. Not going to lie, I actually teared up a couple of times trying to write what that scene would look like. And then I decided to scrap it, because it would break my heart (and Caira’s) to write his death scene. So *puts hand on heart* you have my word that Deek is safe. And thank you!! Ah, I was so worried that Deek was an unlikable character before posting my first chapter, so I’m glad so many people have liked him!! *wipes perspiration from forehead*

And aww, THANK YOU a million times over for that! You’ve no idea how much all of your posts have made me smile and encouraged me when I felt like giving up on Fortitude. I’ll have to add you and all of my other KP friends on my novel’s dedication page 😉 I’m so happy that I found KP, because it’s been a huge bundle of encouragement and inspiration for me!!:)

Hey, so pretty sure this didn’t end up posting the first time I tried to ;-; also nice new profile pic Lexi!

Hello to everyone in the character chat! 😀

Soooo, I’m reviving an old romance WIP for a short story comp (that’s due soon and i’ve been procrastinating ;-;) and I’ve changed up the characters a little bittttt *singsongy voice* Ik i’ve probably posted about this WIP somewhere on KP but wHO CARES!

                            *coughs

                            Anyways… the cast!

Kaizuke: Messy light brown hair that’s constantly pulled back into a short ponytail. (He’s an inventor. Doesn’t have time for haircuts.) Brown eyes. Has an approximate 123456798765678876 pairs of overalls, and, strangely, wears colourful high-tops. And he actually looks good in yellow. (It’s the brown eyes that make it.) He’s smart and invents lots of cool things, and he’s middle-named after his mom, which he does not like (and gets made fun of by Eli, see below). And… he has a bad stutter. He can barely say his own name and literally hates himself for it.

Chiaroscura (Chiaro): Pretty, but doesn’t realize it. Long, light blonde (kind of pale blonde) slightly wavy hair. Turquoise eyes. Wears skirts with cute tops mostly. Usually pretty subdued and reassuring, but can stand up for herself if needed. Nobody ever really talks to her (back down on the ground) so Kaizuke is the first friend she makes in a very long time. Also, her mom’s an alcoholic and forgets about her a lot, so Kaizuke’s friendship (and, okay, maybe more than that too ) helps her grow as a person.

Eli: Kaizuke’s best friend (for a time). Dark-skinned, with black, tight-curl hair and glasses. Weirdly good at chess. He’s very pro-government and wants to go along with what the Council of Aedhàna plan to do to the civilization down on the ground. This sparks a fight between him and Kaizuke. He doesn’t approve of Chiaro being in Aedhàna, and this furthers their fight even more. He makes fun of Kaizuke during this fight, mocking his stutter (treacherous being, how dare you do that to my CHILD)  and making fun of his middle name. Eventually it gets physical and Kaizuke runs off. After that, Eli plots to get Kaizuke out of the way (NOT KILLING HIM DON’T WORRY) and eventually steps into his position as Grand Inventor (kinda like the mayor of the city) to wage war on the Below…

Shalaya (minor character, idk if she’ll even make it to the final draft XD): Eli’s chess partner. Light brown skin and straight black hair. Smart. (I haven’t really developed her much yet?)

Kaizuke’s dad (he doesn’t have a name yet, plus is a minor charrie): The former Grand Inventor. Ever since his wife’s death, he does little or nothing to pay attention to his son or any of Kaizuke’s insecurities about being the next Grand Inventor. He cares primarily about his work and barely listens to his son (Kaizuke has a stutter) because he “takes too long to talk”, in his father’s words.

Those are the characters so far… Tell me your thoughts, everyone!

#1 I ADORE CHARACTERS WITH STUTTERS, SO THIS IS AUTOMATICALLY A WIN FOR ME.

#2 I ALSO LOVE ROMANCES. NUFF SAID.

#3 This sounds spectacular! Yeah, I remember you posting about it before, so I’m SO glad you’re going to write it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These characters sound AMAZING!

Hey, your characters sound so amazing!! 😀 Especially Kaizuke. I mean, I have a weakness for characters with stutters (hence why one of mine has one) and romances, like what Grace said! I love the aesthetic of this story and would love to know more! 🙂 *applaudes* Also the name Chiaro is great. I nearly named Caira ‘Chiara’ in an earlier draft, actually (it isn’t the same name, of course, but I thought it was a cool coincidence).
