Novembe
“Novembré?” The thick accent had changed a bit of his name, but November wasn’t going to correct him. He nodded.
Zlatan grinned, making November’s brows raise. He’d not been expecting a smirk after explaining what he’d done to their armory.
“Vell, zis armory doesn’t belong to me, but if ze owner is te goat head I zink he is I’ll help you smash ze rest of his castle.” Zlatan let out a quiet laugh that caught November off guard.
He relaxed slightly, letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding in. His hand, which had been furiously tugging at his curls, slowly returned to his side. The young man made his way to the window, poking his head out.
(Note: I didn’t realize he’d been wearing a helmet XD)
He spoke to November, responding to his earlier sentence, “You could do a pretty good job of it, if you v’anted to.”
November’s lips quirked and his brain swirled. Was he supposed to take that as an insult or a compliment? Usually it was an insult…
His father’s disappointed glare flashed in his mind’s eye.
But right now it seemed to be a compliment. Which was…strange. Usually, being accident-prone was never a good thing. He shook his head, pushing those thoughts to the back of his mind.
“So…” He ventured, “If you don’t own this castle…” Zlatan glanced at him, “Who does?”
November’s brain surged, like a bolt of electricity had hit him as he remembered the one thing that was most important.
“Ara!” His color drained again and he returned to tugging at his hair. His brain pounded him with questions. Was she still in A’Grend? In the Athenaeum? Wondering where he was? Did she think…he’d left? He winced.
Or…maybe…just maybe was she here? And if so…where?
Zlatan jerked back at November’s sudden outburst, which made November jerk back in turn.
“Ara! I have to find her! If…If she’s here that is. And if not…I have to get home.” He rubbed his head, utterly confused. If she was here, how would he know? And if she wasn’t, he needed to get home so she wouldn’t be worried. Because she was always worried.
Especially now.
But if she was he couldn’t leave her!
And how would he get home?
He didn’t even know where he was….
His eyes shot up at Zlatan, any reservation he’d had before now gone. Thoughts of finding Ara fueled his mind and he looked expectantly at the dark-haired young man before him, hoping he could give him some answers.
“Have you seen Arabella? She’s my…” He stumbled, “She’s my friend.”

Arabella
“November!” Ara called softly, but it still echoed through the large corridors. She grasped her skirt tightly as the sound of her footsteps clonked against the stone. It was darker here, in this corridor. She’d left the one with windows long ago, and now there were only lanterns and candles. Her shadows seemed pleased with the darkness, but Ara was not.
She recoiled at every sound, even though they were made by her. She knew she was being silly, but she was in a strange place, and with no idea how she’d gotten there. Who had orchestrated this event? Was it the Dark One she’d heard of in stories?
She shuddered.
“November! November?” She called out, quickening her pace down the hall, passing a few closed doors here and there. “November, can you hear me? Are you here? November! Novem-”
She gasped. Standing a few feet away, at one of the oak doors was a tall young man. He wore a helmet and was holding a sword and shield.
A knight of some sort, though he was not fully clad in armor, like Ara’s knights were. Still, he looked menacing enough to make her clasp the neck of her bodice.
And he was looking right at her.
She stepped back an inch.
The two stood, motionless for a moment, and Ara’s shoulders relaxed only slightly at the fact that he hadn’t charged toward her. Instead, he seemed just as wary as she was, as if he too had been randomly placed in this position.
Though, from what she could tell, he looked as though he was the guard of this castle, and she was a trespasser. She pursed her lips and sucked in a breath, trying hard to calm her shaking nerves. She clasped her hands together to keep them from shaking.
“H-hello. I…” She glanced behind her, wondering if she should run. Could she outrun this young man? No, he would surely catch up to her and that would be the end.
She sighed. She could do this. Straightening her shoulders, she looked the young man in the eyes, as best she could through his open-faced helmet. Her gaze held steady, defiant, and she forced herself to be unafraid.
“My name’s Arabella Fabel.” She dipped her head politely. “I’m not sure how I’ve come to be here, but, I’d just like to pass by. If you please.”

Zlatan
In an instant November had changed from a fumbling bundle of nerves to a lad staring at Zlatan with a look ready to tear down walls. “Have you seen Arabella? She’s my…She’s my friend.”
Zlatan’s smile returned. The lad could be a fighter after all. “Neh, I ‘ave not seen any living soul ‘ere beside you and my brot’er, but,” he frowned in thought. “To answer your first question, I do not know. Whoever it is ‘as a mind ze size of an apple seed.” He fingered the hilt at his side.
Whoever did own this castle was going to wish he had never heard of the Sons of Sotnik Vratislav.
And if any harm had come to this lad or his friend, he would never have to wish again.
“Come,” Zlatan slid his helmet back on and gestured to the door. “I’ll ‘elp you look for her.

The girl had come to a halt a few feet away. She looked as frightened and out of place as the lad inside the armory.
“H-hello. I…” Her voice trailed off.
Then she took a deep breath and looked Vulkasin straight in the eye, a feat for anyone considering his height.
“My name’s Arabella Fabel.” She dipped her head politely. “I’m not sure how I’ve come to be here, but, I’d just like to pass by. If you please.”
Vulkasin bowed, desiding he’d played sentry long enough. “Lady Fabel, of course you vay pass, but you appear to be looking for someone. V’ould he ‘appen to be a lad of about your own age vith a curly head? Because if so-”
He turned to the door just as it swung open.

“Lady Fabel, of course you vay pass, but you appear to be looking for someone. V’ould he ‘appen to be a lad of about your own age vith a curly head? Because if so-”
Curly hair… Ara’s heart leapt just as the door opened. Out walked a young man with raven black hair, holding his helmet in his hand. A blood-red cape swirled behind him. He was shorter than the other young man, but there was slight resemblance in their facial features. His eyes jerked to Ara, brows arching in what might have been suspicion? Or confusion? She couldn’t tell. He then glanced at the other soldier, who merely shrugged.
“So, you’ll help me then?” Ara smiled at the familiar voice as someone followed the dark-haired fellow out.
“November!” She sighed in relief. His head snapped at her voice and his eyes grew wide as saucers. He beamed, his blue eyes sparkling.
Ara’s worries faded into nothingness, until she remembered the two strangers standing beside her friend. And the swords they both held close. Her smile faltered and her eyes linger on the shorter one. On his blood-red cape and raven colored hair.
Her eyes flashed concern and she peeked at the right side of November’s face, where three gashes stood right beneath his eye. Scars that should’ve been hers.
November
It took everything inside of him not to run and immediately give her a hug, but he knew if he did he’d die from embarrassment. Not that Ara would notice. She’d probably welcome the hug. In fact, he was surprised she hadn’t greeted him yet.
And then he noticed the suspicious look in her eyes.
His smile faded and his brows furrowed. Why was she…
“OH!” He turned to his two new friends, even though he only knew the name of one. “No, Ara, it’s okay.” He held out his arms, “They were going to help me. Find you, that is. But, ah, now I guess I don’t really need help finding you. Considering you’re here and all,” he scratched the back of his head, grinning like a Cheshire Cat.
Ara still warily eyed Zlatan, but slowly her lips twitched into a smile and her gaze returned to November. Her brown hair hung loose over her shoulders and her hands were clasped neatly in front of her. She looked every bit as perfect as ever.
It made November wonder how he looked.
Probably a mess.
As usual.
Before he could say anything more he was taken back by the force of Ara’s arms around his neck. She hugged him tight and whispered, “You’re okay then?”
All he could do was nod, his ears burning. His face turned beet red and he hoped she didn’t notice as she backed up to look at him.
“Good,” she said. November smiled awkwardly, his mouth too dry to speak. She turned to the two strangers, smiling. “It’s…nice to meet you.” She focused on Zlatan. “I’m Arabella.”

HEEEY So…quick question…would it be too late to say…change a little bit about the timeline of where my charries were before they got to the castle? So instead of A’Grend they’d be in a different place? That way waaaay later down the road maybe I could introduce another character? If not that’s fine. It shouldn’t change much, they just wouldn’t mention Being in the Athenaeum or A’Grend before disappearing. They’d mention, instead, being some vague place (if they mention it at all) XD
And it’d also help with the timeline of November’s scars…XD WHOOPS

#ProtectSebMay 3, 2022 at 4:09 pm #110271Sure! That’s fine with me.
By the way, I’m also considering adding in another character, considering the lack of girls. It’d either be one of Viktor’s sisters (Alyona) or an MC from the other series I’m plotting (Winifrith).
But I might not, we’ll just see.
