Mikkel
“We care about you, you know.”
“Thanks.” Mikkel slipped off his helmet, running fingers through greying hair. He absently wondered if it showed in the dim light. “I just… it’s nothing.” He shoved the memories back down, clamping one hand over his left hip.
Lier. “Nothing much.”
Still lier.
He took a few more steps, ignoring the stupid pain in his leg. “Can…can we get away from these wretched torches?”

Ezra
“Can…can we get away from these wretched torches?”
Yep. He was hurting.
A lot.
He shared a glance with Eva.
“You’re welcome. We can get away from these torches.” Eva took many steps so she stood beside Ezra. Gripped his hand.
Squeezed it.
Tight.
Ezra nodded. “Come on. Let’s…get out of here.”
They continued to descend the steps, when Ezra finally opened a door, leading them into a well-lit hallway, the walls decorated with tapestries and artwork.
“They’re beautiful!” Eva cried.
Ezra stepped away from her for a minute. Walked over to Mikkel. “Sure you don’t wanna talk about it? I’m all ears. And…heh, sorry for being a jerk earlier.”

I’m figuring out how to make him talk, I just don’t think he would as long as they’re on that stairwell. So get them out, and ask him again, if you like. 😉

A beautiful castle hall, decorated much like his home manor before the war. Mikkel stood near a raised dias, vague memories of his father, strong and laughing, carrying a protesting Mam to dinner. Of Mam herself, queen of her table, always a smile in her eyes.
Then the poster, asking for men.
Mikkel sighed, and leaned against the wall. He noticed Lieutenant Ezra was standing beside him.
“Sure you don’t wanna talk about it? I’m all ears. And…heh, sorry for being a jerk earlier.”
“Jerk? Oh, I thought that was just some officer stuff.” Mikkel tried to smile. “You have your own troubles to deal with.”
Ezra smiled, and leaned against the wall beside him.
Fine, if you really want to hear… Mikkel strapped his helmet back in place. “Did you want to be a soldier?”

Ezra
“Did you want to be a soldier?”
Hmm…drafted. Ezra thought.
He had a bit of a guess where this was heading.
“Not as a kid. But then…my Nation was attacked. One of my cousin’s was fatally wounded and barely survived…he lost an arm…and when I heard that innocent people, my countrymen, had been killed by our enemy in a surprise attack…I knew I couldn’t stand by anymore. I enlisted in the Air Force and…went to war. So, yeah. Once I got to that point, I wanted to be a soldier.”
He smiled faintly.
If only Yoshua hadn’t had to die. He took in a deep breath.
He couldn’t dwell on that.
Not now.
Not here.
Mikkel needed him.
“Does that answer your question?”
Besides, Ezra needed a way to distract himself from all the guilt.

“I suppose.” Mikkel slid down the wall, where he could rest his head on his knees.
“My father died in the first generation of this war. My mother was poisoned at a munitions plant. I have a sister.” Mikkel smiled faintly, “she never knew our father, or peace. I didn’t want to go, but when one generation is killed, the next must rise in it’s place.” Mikkel shrugged, eyes locked on floor tile beside him. Ezra stayed silent.
“I’m a mariner. I’m the chap they send out to…do stuff. It never goes away.” Mikkel buried his face. “It. Never. Will.”

Oops, I left off the next part. Do you want me to stick it in? If you’ve started one don’t worry about it, I’ll work it in.

Ezra
Wow.
What this man had been through.
Ezra couldn’t…even begin to imagine.
“It. Never. Will.”
Ezra watched as Mikkel buried his face in his knees.
Ezra’s gaze fell to the floor tiles. “…I’m sorry. Really, I am. I wish we could go back and change the past, but,” Ezra’s breath hitched, “we can’t.”
He couldn’t go back and save Yoshua.
Couldn’t save his best friend.
Ezra should have died.
Not Yoshua.
He cleared his throat. “Anything…anything else?”

That’s fine! It actually flows quite a bit smoother now. =)
Mikkel
“Anything else?” Mikkel’s head came up, memories swelling around him. His voice heavy. “There’s always everything else. There are no young men in the kingdom.”
If it would just stop…
“Better are the dead who have sorrow no more, I suppose.” He turned enough to see Ezra’s face. “Do you believe that?”

Ezra
“Do you believe that?”
Ezra slowly sank towards the floor beside him. Their eyes met. “I do. Those who are no longer here don’t have to grieve and feel so much pain like we do. They can be completely and totally…happy and at peace.”
He bit his lip.
Mikkel had opened up.
But Ezra…still didn’t want to.
Maybe he just didn’t want to deal with all the guilt again.
Maybe…he was afraid of being hurt again.
A tear threatened to fall.
Ezra angrily swiped it away.
He wasn’t going to cry.
“You can keep going if you want, Mikkel.”

Mikkel
Mikkel leaned back against the wall behind him. Why would someone willingly listen to the garbled wounds of a soldier, then ask for more? How long had he been talking?
What’s the time?
Mikkel dug his pocket watch out, before declaring, “Two thirty-five. Lovely time to be up at, don’t you think?” He closed the silver case with a satisfying snap. “Fiddles, I might as well be on sentry. Do you have any family?”
Ezra blinked.

Ezra
“Do you have any family?”
Ezra blinked.
He’d gotten lost in his thoughts again. He needed to stop doing that.
Mikkel would catch on eventually.
And he didn’t want to talk about it.
“Yeah. I do. There’s Mama and Dad, Granny, and then there’s my four older siblings and my younger sister. I’m the second youngest of six. And…the youngest son.”
And he missed his family more than he ever thought he could.
But Mikkel was changing the subject…and making Ezra think of many things he’d rather forget.
He didn’t want to be reminded of the friend he’d lost.
The family he missed.
He just wanted to….just wanted to…well, Ezra didn’t know what he wanted anymore.
But he certainly didn’t want to think of the friend he’d lost.
“I left three, almost four years ago. Haven’t seen or heard from them much since. But you’re right. It’s getting late. I don’t need to be dwelling on this right now.”
He needed to get away from all those thoughts.
Before he broke down and cried.
He didn’t want Mikkel…or Eva, or anyone, for that matter, to see him cry.
“We need to…we need to find a way out or somewhere to sleep.”
Eva turned around. “We do. But you can talk about your family.”
“No. I can’t. Not right now.”
