      Zlatan

“Can you open the door?” Sofia’s voice was pale.

Zlatan drew his hand down the doorpost untill he found the bar. It lifted with surprising ease, and the stairwell was flooded by a soft glow.

He stumbled through, nearly blind in the moonlight. Moonlight?

The others had followed, or rather surged, out into the corridor. Zlatan mentally examined each one. Though pale and a bit shaky, a few with haunted eyes and white knuckles, they were all present.

Relief poured over him, pooling inside, making him want to sing. He smiled instead.

      “Vulkasin, you’re bleeding.”

His brother touched his forehead, then grinned. “I told you it v’ould be a good defense.”

Zlatan frowned and glanced back at Sofia. She had apparently missed whatever had gashed Vulkasin.

      Probably the door lintel.

His brother pressed his sleeve along the cut for a moment then proceeded to ignore it.

“Well…Hopefully the exit’s nearby” Ara said, looking at him. “right?”

Zlatan looked around, and nearly laughed. A few feet down the hall stood a large door, iron bands holding strengthening it’s surface.

“I’d say so. Come, there may be guards.”

He strapped his shield tight over his left arm and drew his sword.

“Ready?” Vulkasin was likewise armed and at the door, an impatiently staring back at him.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond! I was out.

            Hesh

Hesh eyed the discs Rinzler wielded. He did not want to be on the wrong side of those.  He listened to the pair’s harsh whispers. He felt his heart drop to his stomach. Could they trust him? He wouldn’t—couldn’t—trust himself. Betrayal haunted him like a shadow, following his every step. But maybe… this wasn’t his world, could things be different? Maybe here he could be who he couldn’t be back there.

Feather’s words sliced through his thoughts. “I told you my name. Will you tell me yours?”

Hesh smiled. Yes, he would. His real name, not one of his aliases. “My name is Hesh,” he said. “Hesh Conlannen.”

              Jocelyn & Nyx

Vulkasin wasn’t the only impatient one.

”Been ready!” Lyn said. Zlatan winced at her boisterous exclamation. Nyx’s nose twitched in anticipation and he leapt to the floor, his tails and ears twitching excitedly.

“Let’s get this going already! I’m ready to eat!”

November nodded his agreement to the little fox.

The brothers grinned at each other before barreling ahead, knocking into the door with all their force. Ara and November winced each time.

It took a few times, but the brothers finally wore the door (and perhaps themselves) out.

A cool breeze blew in from the outside and Lyn smile. She and Nyx ran outside, ignoring Zlatan’s calls for them to wait.

The starlight fueled the duo and Lyn beamed into the sky. She sighed happily. Nyx stretched, his fur ruffling in the breeze, there were a few trees surrounding the castle, and the grass was green once you reached the outskirts of the stone. It was…quite beautiful really.

“Ah, much less dreary.” Lyn grinned. She turned to find the others filing out and enjoying the outside in their own way.

Nyx was sniffing the air, his nose twitching furiously. “I smell…food…”

”Really?! Where?” The group looked at the duo, for different reasons,

The brothers and Sophie at Lyn’s outburst; Arabella and November because of what Nyx said.

              ”Food?” November repeated.

I think it’s…that way,” Nyx pointed with his snout, one front paw up.

“Let’s go!” Lyn told the group.

                Feather

“That’s kind of a cool name,” said Feather as Hesh introduced himself. “It sort of reminds me of the names from Rinzler’s world.” She walked down the hallway. “If this place is anything like the Sanctuary—a place in the world I come from—we should see more action once we get closer to the center.”

Unless we’re alone here, she thought. Although it was unlikely—if that had been the case, it would’ve been just her and Rinzler. Hesh wouldn’t have been there, since he didn’t seem like he was from one of their worlds….right?

She turned to look back at him. “Where were you going when you showed up here? I was going to the Sanctuary, actually. I completed a year-long trial that every one of my kind has to go through at sone point in their lives.” She sighed. “I was excited to see my sisters again. What if I never do?”

                  Hesh

Hesh listened, agape, as the crew meandered down the long, dark passage. He wondered if it was possible to literally talk someone’s ear off. In his line of work, people generally kept to themselves. Feather’s openness was… refreshing.
Hesh cleared his throat. “Well, to answers your first question…” He trailed off. Should he tell her the truth? What if it ruined any chance of her ever trusting him? No, if he lied and she found out, her trust would be broken. A trust broken is worse than a trust never given. He would tell her the truth. “I… I was on my way to one of the Emperor’s estates. I had heard rumours of strange experiments with Dust gone awry. I had found out that a large portion of pure Dust was being kept somewhere in his castle… so I decided to steal it.” He could practically taste Feather’s silence. Had he already broken her trust? He chanced a question. “Sisters? I never knew my family… Could you tell me about them?”

Before he heard her answer, the group came to the end of the dank, dark passage and came to a door, illuminated by the flickering stub of a candle secured in a tarnished sconce. Apprehension seized Hesh. In this strange new world, who knew what dangers could be on the other side?

                    Feather and Rinzler

“See? He just openly admitted he came here while trying to steal something!” Rinzler whisper-hissed.

“Ssshh, Rinzler.” said Feather. “We don’t know his motivation. In his world, he might very well be the good guy. Until he does something really wrong, I choose to trust him.”

“The last guy you trusted like that ran off to join the Empire on you.” Rinzler pointed out.

“Not exactly by choice. And we got him back.” Feather replied.

Hesh’s voice brought her out of her thoughts. “Sisters? I never knew my family. Could you tell me about them?”

She opened her mouth to reply, but stopped when she saw the door at the end of the hallway. It swung open slightly, creaking, as she touched it.

“We going in there?” Rinzler asked, the lights on his suit giving them a little extra illumination in the darkness.

@koshka @godlyfantasy12 (sorry it’s short, but nothing else came to mind to make it longer)

                      Sofia

She knew she could have helped the men, and she’d almost offered, but she wasn’t sure yet whether they would trust her enough or whether she felt up to it yet. Her panic from the stairs had left her shaken and feeling oddly weak. And she didn’t like that. She also didn’t want anyone noticing it.

The brothers had smashed through the doors and the group filed through just when Arabelle and November burst out: “Really?! Where?”

What is that about? she wondered, looking towards them, then following their eyes to Jocelyn and Nyx

“Food?” November said questioningly, still looking at the girl and her fox.

Somehow the pair communicated a silent reply before Lyn said, “Let’s go!” She led off, down the hall.

Sofia hurried to catch up to the bothers, the cool breeze that’d worked its way mysteriously into these halls re-energizing her.

“Ohey–Z’atan and Vul’asin, correct?” she spoke cautiously, carefully considering her words. “I beg your pardon for not having offered my help previously.” Small pause. “I am well capable, but I fear that trust might… might be an issue.” Another short pause, to think more. “I now offer my strength and skills, if you wish them. You… are the leaders, to this company, correct?”

                        Zoe/Snow

Corvina had chosen the way that the group had gone. Zoe followed it eagerly, sometimes hurrying ahead so much that she had to return to Corvina because the girl stopped moving when she lost sight of Zoe.

Four people turned to five and a woodland creature, one she was unfamiliar with but smelled nice. Exciting!

Corvina! Corvina! she barked to the girl, rushing back and forth with her tail sweeping wildly, touching her gentle master with her nose to urge her to follow before dashing off, then back again, trying to hurry Corvina up.

All together now! It is easier! But… she stopped for a second, her fur standing up a little. But dangerous, too.

She retreated closer to Corvina’s side, staying well within a few feet of the girl as she continued onward, following the path still, but less erratically now.

Be careful, she whined as they approached a new room. She laid her ears back against her head, clinging almost to Corvina’s side now, as the scent from before joined the group.

She pinned her ears down and whined, sitting down and refusing to move when she caught the smell of blood mingled with the first scent.

Blood! she whimpered, her mind returning to the confines of Zoe’s memories, and the sight of Ric and Nic bleeding on the floor where they’d fallen under her claws and fangs before being forced back to human form. I didn’t mean to! It was Malcolm who made me! I tried to warn them! She whimpered and lay on the floor, crying.

She curled up in a white ball of fur, her mind locked in a struggle between two different places: Snow and Zoe.

I didn’t mean to. I didn’t… she cried, ignoring everything as the endless struggle resumed.

"[Write] today like there's no tomorrow!"

                          Hesh

The door swung open with an ominous groan. Hesh could feel the darkness of beyond the door drawing them towards it like a maelström. A chill trickled down his spine. Whoever owned this castle was quite clearly not friendly.

“We going in there?” Rinzler asked, the lights on his odd clothes causing eerie shadows to dance like some malicious fairy court of legend.

“I say no,” Hesh muttered. “Can’t you feel the darkness coming from it? This is an evil place.”

(Now, I don’t know what should happen next… could you write that?)

                            Kent Briggs

Suddenly, from the deep blackness beyond the door came a roar “LIGHT!!!” and a huge and lanky form burst out of the murk. “Wonderful Light!” Kent Bigg the leopard, clothes torn, a goose egg above his left eyebrow, and covered from head to toe in dirt, took a flying leap through the doorway and collapsed in front of his startled rescuers. He lay there for a second then rolled over on his back. “You have no idea how good it is to see ya’ll and your beautiful candle. I have been stuck in there for two days, dropped my own candle you see, and. . .” Kent balthered on non stop for 10 minutes finally ending with “. . . and that’s why I couldn’t get out of that horrible place. Am I talking like a fool? I’m sorry. It’s just so good not to be blind and alone. I don’t even know your names. Okay, I’ll shut up now.”

                              Zlatan

The door broke open in a spray of splinters. Zlatan stumbled through, barely catching his feet again.

This new hall wasn’t much more than an arched and pillared walkway beside the central keep. In a few more steps they would reach the paved courtyard and be in sight of the moon.

He sighed, free of echoing chambers and empty passages. This was the Outside, full and open. A breath of night air swept past him, brushing the hair plastered to his brow.

                              Zlatan smiled.

A sudden outburst from Lyn jerked him back to the present. She, and in turn everyone else, was staring at Nyx. The little fox had his nose in the air, head cocked to the side, highly interested in something.

“Food?” November said, his voice full of joy.

“Let’s go!” Lyn bounded off. Apparently he had been correct.

Zlatan turned to follow, but Sofia’s voice stopped him.

“Ohey–Z’atan and Vul’asin, correct? I beg your pardon for not having offered my help previously… I am well capable, but I fear that trust might… might be an issue.” She looked cautious, as if she was deliberately choosing each of her words. “I now offer my strength and skills, if you wish them. You… are the leaders, to this company, correct?”

“Ah, yah, Ve are ze two sons of Sotnik Vratislav.” Zlatan smiled, but didn’t know how to answer her question. “Z’ere is no need to apologize, and all help is appreciated, but Ve do not…I do not know if someone is officially in charge. Ve just happened to do somefing, I suppose.”

                              Vulkasin

His brother was almost ridiculously tedious sometimes. Vulkasin grinned.

“My brot’er means z’ere has been now official declaration of a leader, and, yah, trust is most likely a problem around here, but vat does zat matter? V’elcome to ze company!” He bowed to Sofia and gestured to the drifting figures.  “Perhaps Ve should catch up?”

Zlatan turned, once again unconsciously leading.

By the time they reached it the group was well out into the courtyard, following the prancing fox. A few more steps brought them to a door in one of the lower houses. Vulkasin inhaled, drawn by the scent of baked bread.

                              November opened the door.

The day had gone, and with it went the rest of he weary kitchen workers, all except for one small lass bent over a pot of stew.

Alyona absentmindedly lifted the lid and stirred it again. It was bubbling merrily away, sending up tiny whiffs of stewed grain. She settled the lid back in place with a satisfied thump.

The bread was baked and cooling on the table, and she was finally free from the constant watch if the head cook.

                                Free to find her brother.

She stood and took began inspecting her losves for any that may be easily missed. Viktor would be hungry after spending a day avoiding guards with only a bowl of snitched auleives to go on, and they both liked bread with their stew.

A heavy footstep sounded outside the door. Alyona froze.

Someone was at the door, and it wasn’t Viktor.

Before she could stop herself, she was flying to the shadows beside the fireplace.

You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan

                                  (Power, is Kent a leopard?)

                                  Hesh

Hesh stepped back as a lithe form leaped, roaring, from the depthless darkness. “Light!” the creature… yelled? “Wonderful light!” The creature looked like a large, spotted cat, but spoke with the voice of a human. This day was only getting more bizarre.

Hesh eyed the cat warily, not sure whether it was friend or foe, but the creature’s ramblings soon eased his fears. This cat talked more than a merchant!

“. . . And that’s why I couldn’t get out of that horrible place. Am I talking like a fool? I’m sorry. It’s just so good not to be blind and alone. I don’t even know your names. Okay, I’ll shut up now,” the cat finished.

“Hesh,” Hesh smiled. “And with me are Feather and Rinzler. How did you get here?” He glanced at his companions. “We were just deciding whether to go through that door ourselves, but I believe your tale made the decision for us— unless there are any objections?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “Cat, what do you call yourself?” Hesh glanced at the yawning maw that was the door and shuddered. “Let’s leave this place.”

We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good on, eh?
