That’s such a perfect description of Vulkasin! (And their marching rations, hahaha)
Now for my part…

#ProtectSebMay 5, 2022 at 12:52 pm #110569I srsly love these brothers. And their relationship with each other is great. I also love Vulkasin’s kinda teasing nature. I think he’d kinda be funny with November especially cuz both of them can already probably sense November has an OBVIOUS crush on Ara
meanwhile Ara’s oblivious….always oblivious Ara…. 🤦🏻♀️

Ocran moved on down the passage, pausing now and again to wrap his wounded hand.
The filthy little beast.
He stopped at a window to clear his head in the fresh air.
They had escaped, again, and things were becoming strikingly familiar.
The Hawk had flown, and fledglings with him. Not even the news that the Hawk’s wife had died ever mended matters.
If only that other son had never have survived birth. If only he’d been like his older sibling. Then Ocran might have been able to set the Eagle against his brother.
The Ra’ahrí couldn’t have rejoiced in his nephew if he didn’t know he had a living son.
And it was that, call it selfless but Ocran knew better, bitter joy that had kept them from his reach.
Ocean shook his head. That didn’t matter, the Eyre had fallen anyway, and he, Ocran Shepherd of Eirtan had been victorious. Who cared if the Hawk had escaped, he was crippled. Who cared if the Eaglet had lived, he didn’t anymore.
He snatched up another torch and set off again. By his flame he had rewrought kingdoms; one young girl and her mad pet wouldn’t triumph forever.
You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
May 5, 2022 at 1:17 pm #110572Yes! XD I think they figured that out pretty quick.
This next one would probably be a good place for them to meet up with someone, whether Sofia or Lyn and Nyx.
Vulkasin and Zlatan
November stared at the strip in his hands with something approaching horror.
Zlatan didn’t notice.
Vulkasin desperately tried not to laugh, remembering his first encounter with ‘ration’.
November glanced at Ara, who shrugged. ““You’re going to have to eat something.”
“Well, yea. But what is it?”
Dried fish. Nobody ever asked what type of fish.
The lad closed his eyes and took a bite. His expression remained frozen.
Vulkasin nearly choked with suppressed mirth.
He took another nibble. Poor lad. Vulkasin began to lose control.
“How does it taste?” Ara looked both curious and concerned.
“Like shoe leather.”
Ara laughed.
That did it. Vulkasin joined in, giving up all pretense of not being amused.
Zlatan looked up. “Let’s go.” He glanced once back up the corridor before striding away, leading them back the way they’d come.
“V’ere are ve going? Ve already came zees vay.”
His brother ignored him.
A moment later they came back to a place where the hall split. Zlatan stood in the passage for a moment before turning to them. “Vat do you zink?”

Fork the GorkMay 5, 2022 at 1:50 pm #110575@koshka I wouldn’t mind if they Jocelyn. They can also meet Sofia too. Jocelyn’s kinda by herself now sooo 😂
Jocelyn
Nyx was sleeping soundly, curled around her neck and tucked away in her hair. She smiled, listening to his soft, sweet purrs.
Her steps were slow and steady, as she didn’t want to jostle him, and she knew they were now far enough from Ocran they shouldn’t have to worry.
Still, her feet wanted to move faster. Part of it was adrenaline. It coursed through her veins like lightning, zapping through every part of being. Speed and excitement were a part of her daily life. But that wasn’t all that made her quicken her pace.
This castle was dark, and while it didn’t frighten her as much as it would some, her encounter with that man had put her on edge. Mostly because she knew he didn’t seem like one to just let them go.
Especially now that his pride had probably taken a hit. And some blood had been spilt, thanks to her furry friend.
Nyx’s purring made her subconsciously rub his head, relaxing at the touch of his fur.
So long as they were together, everything was fine. So long as nothing happened to him, everything was fine.
Yes. Everything was fine. Everything was great!
She smiles, continuing her trip down the corridors, searching for any sign of her two friends. She chuckled, thinking to herself.
Only a few weeks ago, these “friends” were nothing but strangers. And now? They were the only family she had.
Her smile left and she stopped walking.
The only family she had left….
The realization hit her like a thousand pounds and she sucked in a breath. Her joyful demeanor wilted beneath the memories of everything that had taken place only weeks before.
Lies. Betrayal. Deceit.
Death.
Everything she thought was true had been a lie.
Her entire life. In one fell swoop it had been destroyed.
These two strangers had become her only friends in this world. Arabella and November. Two people she didn’t even know had stepped in and saved her when everything seemed hopeless.
She had to find them.
They we’re all she had.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Everyone else was a lie.
“Lynnie?” Nyx was staring at her now, his eyes filled with concern. He climbed down, into her arms and looked up. Their eyes met and her heart slowly pieced back together as a silent word passed between them.
No, she realized. Not everyone was a lie. She held him closed and smiled, breathing in his fur.
“I…I’m fine. Don’t worry.” She choked.
Nyx didn’t seem to believe her, but he couldn’t argue because his ears pricked and he turned his head suddenly. Lyn followed his gaze to one of the doors opposite of them.
“What is it?” She whispered, backing up.
“Someone’s coming….”
“Lord What’s-his-face?”
“Doesn’t….smell like him…”
”What’s it smell like?”
“Like…” Nyx’s nose twitched. “Steel…metal. Smells like metal. And spruce.”
”Spruce?”
”Yup.”
”What does-“
Nyx nearly jumped from Lyn’s hands-
“Wait! There’s something else!”
”What?!”
Nyx smelled the air furiously and then looked at Lyn, all smiles. His eyes sparkled.
“Flowers. And honey.”
Flowers….
Flowers and honey.
“Ara and November!” Lyn cried! Nearly twirling with Nyx. She ran toward the door, smiling like a Cheshire Cat.

They stared at him, each in a different version of confusion.
He must not have explained something right, but what? “Which passage do you think-”
A door a little farther down one corridor, a door flew open with a bang and a bright flash shot out, landing before them. “I have arrived!” A cheery voice announced.
There stood a girl, her smile unbelievably large, and in her arms sat a creature, perhaps a fox, looking as pleased as she.
Zlatan blinked.

Arabella and November
Ara gasped in delight at the sight of the familiar figure. Her face was glowing, despite the darkness all around, and her bright smile lit up the room.
”Jocelyn!” November cried. Before another word could be spoken, Jocelyn leapt from her spot, Nyx following suit, his paws reaching out.
They ignored the brothers, their green eyes focused solely on November and Ara. Jocelyn and Nyx wrapped the two in a chokehold of a hug, nearly knocking them over. Nyx chittered excitedly, filling the corridor with squeaks and squeals, though in Ara and November’s mind they were also distinct words.
“Boy! You will not BELIEVE what we’ve been through!”
”Ah! I’m so glad we found you!”
Ara was beaming, as was November, though their reunion was cut a tad short when she noticed the brother’s on guard expressions, and that Zlatan had pulled out his sword.
November noticed too and his face paled. He held out his arms.
”AGH NO WAIT, it’s our friend! Ah, another friend, that is,” he chuckled awkwardly. Zlatan raised his brows and the brothers glanced at each other. November couldn’t blame them for their wariness.
Jocelyn and Nyx weren’t exactly known for being subtle. And they had burst in unannounced, and nearly tackled November and Ara to the ground.
Most would view that as an attack. Especially considering Nyx’s tiny canines and incessant squeaks that Zlatan and Vulkasin couldn’t understand.
Lyn turned to the brothers.
”Oh! Hi!” She waved, bounding off of the friends, but still keeping her arms around their necks. Nyx had jumped on November’s neck and was rolling his head and front paws in his curls. November ducked his head slightly, trying to keep him from falling, not that the little creature needed any help.
He had perfect balance, unlike November.
“Name’s Jocelyn! This is Nyx!” She nodded at the fox-like creature.
“I’m so happy you’re here,” Ara smiled, giving Jocelyn another hug. “But what how’d you get here?”
”No clue! Just…woke up and BAM, here we were!” Lyn shrugged, as if this were the most normal thing in the world. “Who are your new friends?”
“This,” Ara pointed at the tallest brother, “Is Vulkasin-“
”And this is Zlatan!” November said and then yelped as one of Nyx’s paws accidentally got caught in a curl.
“Whoops. Sorry.”
November rubbed his head. “Eh, it’s alright.” Zlatan and Vulkasin glanced at him curiously. November blushed, realizing it looked like he was talking to no one.
Nyx jumped back onto Lyn’s shoulder, and they both looked expectantly at the brothers, waiting for them to speak about their sudden appearance.

His brother’s face looked to be stone, the expression which meant he wasn’t comfortable, although he had returned his blade to it’s scabbard.
Vulkasin laughed. He couldn’t help it really. Not with Zlatan acting a complete Desanik beside him (Military officer similar to a sergeant). At first he tried to cover it, but it was no use. “You two…ah…”
He caught another glimpse of his brother staring at him, and nearly doubled over. Then he coughed and regained his composure.
“Forgive me, and v’elcome to zees, ah, unit.” He grinned at them. “Also, my brot’er is a fine enough fellow, he’s just a leetle jumpy.” He smirked at Zlatan, who just shook his head, but the corner of his mouth was quirked.
“I vas not expecting a friend, and certainly not two.” Zlatan’s face softened into a smile, although an uncertain one. “Ve v’ere looking for some’fing to eat, but have yet to find our vay around ‘ere.”

Corvina drew a breath, eyeing Zoe like she had done something wrong.
“Look,” she said, her voice soft like when Malcolm coaxed her before demanding something from her. “I’m not ‘ordering’ you to do anything. I’m just…letting you tag along, okay? That’s it.” Corvina spoke cooly, almost slyly, like there was a hidden trick.
Zoe wished she could cry, but Malcolm had long ago torn all the tears from her body, and so all she had left was silence. Speaking only made these situations worse.
“And if we run into…whoever this is your so scared of, don’t worry. I doubt he’s that scary. Trust me, I’ve been through worse.” Corvina crossed her arms, confidence in her entire stance. “I can take him. So let’s just get going.” She turned around and stalked away. Zoe perked up a little at her words. Corvina could protect her! She’s said so!
Puppy-like, Zoe walked behind her, calmed and cheered. Corvina would protect her from Malcolm’s punishment! She had promised.
She didn’t let herself doubt that it might just be another trick. She needed this chance, and if it cost her the twins, she could always force Malcolm to kill her, someway or other. But Corvina would protect her. And if Corvina would protect her, then Corvina could protect the twins.
She would obey Corvina faithfully.
As she followed the other girl, the sun faded, and then it took Zoe a moment to realize that she’d shifted.
It came so naturally, after all the years, and she could shift while running without missing a step. It was simply: one moment she was on two feet, the next she was on four snow white paws. Human to wolf in a few hazy seconds.
She pranced forward a little quicker and licked Corvina’s hand gently, giving her a smile when she turned and looked back.
I’m much more helpful this way, she tried to say with her eyes and body. Shall I start looking? She tilted her head, letting her tongue hang out of her mouth and sniffing the air a little, then pacing forward a few steps. She looked back questioningly. Find people?
