      Vulkasin and Zlatan

Vulkasin watched his brother standing still in the corridor, his head cocked, listening, as if trying to tell were the blast had come from.

Nowhere near. But a moment later there was something else, something at the edge of his hearing, teasing him. Vulkasin shook his head, it must just be some ringing in his ears.

“So, which way do we go?” Ara’s voice broke in from behind him. They had been having a whispered discussion… perhaps they had reached a conclusion.

How strange, both Ara and November looked uneasy. He grinned, trying to ease them a bit.

“So, brilliant, vat’s ze plan?” He elbowed Zlatan.

      Wrong mistake.

His twin turned slowly around and stared at him, one brow crooked, golden eyes flaring. For a moment the nearly twelve inch height difference didn’t matter.

      “Vat do you zink?”

Vulkasin shifted his shield to his other arm and cleared his throat.

“Ah?” The stormcloud passed and Zlatan turned to the others. “V’en vas ze last time you two ate?”

Thanks! This is SO MUCH FUN!!

        Ocran

”Lord Governor?! Two titles in one?!” She gasped in apparent admiration, “How amazing is that?! Nyx! Did you hear that!”

The beast wasn’t paying her any mind, of course, and instead was fairly foaming at the mouth in rage.

        She stroked it’s head.

“Ah, ah, now Nyx, do be nice! Is that anyway to treat a Lord Governor! Do forgive him.” Jocelyn curtsied deeply, suddenly a comply lady, although her words were still unpolished. “He’s been quite antsy recently.”

Ocran wasn’t quite sure what to say, which infuriated him all the more. He did not plan to be befuddled be a mere girl who couldn’t keep her mouth shut.

“OH! And this is your castle? HOW WONDERFUL!!” She fairly shouted in glee. “Might I make a few suggestions? Okay, firstly, the dungeon. I think it could use a COMPLETE remodel. Perhaps remove the bones that are down there? Make it a bit less dreary. Oh, and these stone walls could use a fresh coat of paint….“ She paused as if contemplating the necessary options. Ocran was about to command her to be quiet when she interrupted his moment. Again.

“Hmm, and what else? There was one other thing…” She glanced about her and then spun back to face him, flinging the snarling Nyx thing at him crying,  “AH YES! These torches really are a fire hazard you know!”

It shrieked as it spun in the air, tails twirling for balance.

”Showtime dearest!” Jocelyn called as she lept to the nearest sconce and withdrew the torch. Before Ocran could get to her, the fox thing was on its feet charging at him.

Let it come. He’d be ready. No matter how fierce the tiny creature was, how protective, it was no match for his skill and height.

But it didn’t attack. Instead, Ocran found himself stumbling over it’s wild form, his soldier’s balance suddenly lost.

The girl threw one of the torches at him, and he lost the rest of his balance dodging it. Even then it scorched the thick leather of his boot. His good Dorwainian boot with its hard sole, so superior to any made by Eirtan craft,  now had a hole in it.

He went to rise only to find, of all unforgivable insults, the girl was jumping over him.

He reached out and caught her ankle. She yanked and pulled, but of course she couldn’t escape his iron grip.

Hearing her call for her little furry guard to assist her, Ocran shifted to try to find it.

        Too late.

Something like a small version on a War dog’s bite latched onto his wrist. Ocran yelled and let go of her ankle to try to shake it off. In a flash, both girl and monster were gone.

Ocran rose to his knees and examined his wrist. Little red tooth marks curved around it, a stinging reminder of the strength of the weak.

Ocean shook his head and scrambled to his feet.

        He’d pay blood for blood.

I don’t believe so, and I should know as this is the ONE book I’ve actually managed to plot.

Well, that poem popped into my head. In truth my story isn’t even similar, at least as far as I know.

            November

“V’en vas ze last time you two ate?”

November’s stomach growled in reply. He blushed, cocking his lips in one direction. The hunger pangs from earlier returned with a passion and his stomach reeled.

            He was, indeed, very hungry.

Ara laughed sweetly, making November blush all the harder, though she didn’t seem to notice. He was thankful for that.

“I’m honestly not sure.” She replied.

”Yea, don’t remember. Things got kinda….loopy when we got here. However we got here. Wherever here is. That’s  still all…up in the air. Ya know?” November shrugged. He looked around and frowned. “And we still haven’t passed a single kitchen. Seriously! What kind of place has fifty million rooms with no kitchen?!”

Ara laughed again and it echoed through the hall, making November smile. He loved her laugh.

“But I could eat! I could eat a horse! Ehh…no…take that back, that sounds nasty,” November grimaced. He now had a very unpleasant taste in his mouth. “But, ahhh…any ideas where we could find some food?”

”Yes, I don’t think we’re going to just stumble onto a freshly baked pie anytime soon…” Ara sighed.

                Zoe

Corvina studied her for a few minutes.

“Fine with me,” she shrugged, but Zoe felt her eyes studying her. Picking her apart. Dissecting her, like Malcolm did every time. Perhaps even reading my thoughts. She let her eyes fall, ashamed.

“I suppose you won’t be much help if I don’t tell you what I’m doing here, hm?”

Orders? Zoe looked up, hopeful and waiting for what she should do.

“I’m looking for a girl, or her friends. The why doesn’t really matter. To you, anyway. I just need to know why they’re here, and stop them. Simple.” Corvina shrugged.

Zoe hesitated. She hated how this girl played with her, not giving her direct orders, not asking questions, and expecting her to know what to do. That is simple?

“I don’t know who is here. I don’t know how to stop people, in this shape. I search better when I have shifted, and I fight in that form, too. But, please! Tell me what to do! I don’t understand what–what you want when you don’t tell me! I–I don’t know if you–you expect me to obey or–or what you expect me to do!” Zoe rattled out the words, shaking with fear as she continued speaking out of turn. Malcolm never punished her severely for this, but he always ensured that he punished her then spoke less clearly the next time. And he punished the twins if she spoke out of turn again. “Please!”

She cowed away from Corvina, raising a hand between them to ward off any blows, but fixed her eyes on the other girl’s black hair, hope pooling inside her slowly. Perhaps she would be more like Nic and Ric than with just her hair.

                  Actually, yes! Here it is.

“@elishavet-pidyon OH BOI OCRAN BE MAAAAAD BRUH XD

                  Jocelyn & Nyx

”Maybe give me a bit more warning next time before TOSSING ME INTO THE AIR?!”

”Sorry, love.” Jocelyn chuckled. “Though your expression was priceless!”

Nyx pouted. “You could’ve filled me in!”

“Umm, when exactly?” She asked. The two were steadily running down the hall, flying into different rooms, and zig-zagging into different halls.

There was no way Lord Prune-Bag would catch up to them now.

“I don’t know! That was for you to figure out!” He huffed, annoyed.

”Oh Nyx…don’t be like that…” She pursed her lips, giving him her big puppy dog eyes as he ran beside her. He clicked his tongue, ignoring her.

Once she felt they were safe, she stopped.

Laughing, she scooped him up and rolled him onto his back. In a flash she was nuzzling his tummy with her face and kissing him.

He screeched and squealed, fighting to get free of her, though being careful not to hurt her, and she being careful not to hurt him.

She held tight, though, and he couldn’t escape.

“LYN, ENOUGH! STOP!” He growled menacingly, but to her it sounded like nothing more then a playful purr.

“Oh Nyxie, chill.” She smirked, stopping her onslaught of lovey-dovey affection. She cuddled him and sighed.

Nyx blew a puff of air and crossed his furry paws. His green eyes glared up at hers and his nose twitched.

”So much for showing you how much I care!” She faked a frown and then set him back on the ground. He immediately shook himself and pawed at his ears.

”I already know you care. I’m your favorite.”

                  ”Oh really. My favorite what?”

”Your favorite everything!” He boasted, smirking. Lyn laughed again. She couldn’t help but love her little friend’s pride, even if it sometimes got him into trouble. She crossed her arms.

Nyx bounded up her leg and made his way into her shoulder, nuzzling his face against hers.

”Besides, I know you love me. Heh I wouldn’t?”

                  “Oh Nyx.”

                  “I’m kidding!”

”Uh-huh.” Lyn grinned. Nyx smiled, one of his ears folding in an attempt to make him look innocent. He inched his way into her hair and curled up. He yawned.

                  ”Be…careful Lynnie.”

                  ”I will Nyx.”

                  ”Love you.”

Her eyes softened and she leaned her head close to his, taking in the soft moment. “Love you too, Nyx.” She looked at the door ahead of her and, as Nyx fell asleep, nestled on her shoulder and in her hair, she whispered, “Now, let’s go find our friends.””

                        Corvina

Corvina went to take a step when Zoe’s voice made her halt.

“I don’t know who is here. I don’t know how to stop people, in this shape. I search better when I have shifted, and I fight in that form, too.” The girl was trembling now. “But, please! Tell me what to do! I don’t understand what–what you want when you don’t tell me! I–I don’t know if you–you expect me to obey or–or what you expect me to do!”

She had taken a step back, her hand now held out like she expected Corvina to come at her, fists raised, ready to strike.

And, Corvina could, but why? It wasn’t like the girl had done anything.

She had a feeling she wasn’t going to like this Malcolm character, whoever he was.

He sounded too…cruel. Which was odd, all things considered. After all, she was the villain here.

But, from the way the girl reacted, this Malcolm seemed far too familiar. Far too dark and shady for Corvina’s liking.

And Corvina was used to the dark. She lived in it.

                        She frowned at the girl.

This Malcolm seemed far to similiar to….

”Eder?” Her voice toyed. “Or maybe even…mother dearest?”

The words caused a knee-jerk reaction. Corvina gripped her head. Zoe flinched, obviously fearing she’d brought on this reaction.

Corvina sucked in a breath, calming herself. She narrowed her eyes at the girl.

”Look,” She spoke, her voice….unnaturally soft. Softer then she was used to. “I’m not “ordering” you to do anything. I’m just…letting you tag along, okay? That’s it.” Corvina tried to keep emotion out of her voice. She hated how…docile she sounded.

                        But she couldn’t help it.

Staring at Zoe, all she could see was herself.

And her mind had no problem screaming that revelation.

”And if we run into…whoever this is your so scared of, don’t worry. I doubt he’s that scary. Trust me, I’ve been through worse.” She crossed her arms, trying to look defiant. Hoping it worked. Her voice was slowly returning it’s normal, cold, uncaring tone. “I can take him. So let’s just get going.” Corvina turned around and stalked away, leaving Zoe in a confused state, but the girl seemed a bit more relaxed.

                        Corvina, however, was in turmoil.

                        As usual.

                          Zlatan and Vulkasin

At the mention of food the lad’s eyes nearly doubled in size and Ara’s laugh sounded alongside a soft rumble. She smiled at Novembré. “I’m honestly not sure.”

Why didn’t I think of this? Zlatan glanced down the Corridor to the last light slit they had passed. Darkness. How long had  it been?

Novembré had turned red again, though not quite as much as before. “Yea, don’t remember. Things got kinda….loopy when we got here. However we got here. Wherever here is. That’s still all…up in the air. Ya know? And we still haven’t passed a single kitchen. Seriously! What kind of place has fifty million rooms with no kitchen?!” He looked concerned. This lad must not know much about stronghold castles.

Ara’s laugh again revived his smile.

“But I could eat! I could eat a horse! Ehh…no…take that back, that sounds nasty. But, ahhh…any ideas where we could find some food?”

Zlatan saw Vulkasin’s grin flash, and knew exactly what he was about to say.

However, Ara’s next words brought a little hope. “Yes, I don’t think we’re going to just stumble onto a freshly baked pie anytime soon…”

His brother’s grin widened. Zlatan sighed.

“Horse isn’t too bad, zough not as good as v’ild goat. Now, if you ‘ave a-” Zlatan interrupted.

“The buteries vill be either on ze lowest level of zees ‘ouse, or in a separate building.” Dismay registered across the lad’s face. “But I do ‘ave ‘vone day marching ration, if you need somfing to gnaw on untill ve can find better.” He dig around in his small pouch as he spoke and drew out the untouched strip of dried fish, still wrapped in it’s white cloth.

The lad’s eyes looked about to come out of his head.

That something started teasing his ears again. He glanced behind them as he handed Novembré the ration. A soft pattering sound, even spaced and coming closer, but from where? “Lets go.” He started striding back down the hall.

Besides, I know you love me. Who wouldn’t?”

                                “Oh Nyx.”

                                “I’m kidding!”

”Uh-huh.” Lyn grinned. Nyx smiled, one of his ears folding in an attempt to make him look innocent. He inched his way into her hair and curled up. He yawned.

                                Be…careful Lynnie.”

                                ”I will Nyx.”

                                Love you.”

Her eyes softened and she leaned her head close to his, taking in the soft moment. “Love you too, Nyx.” She looked at the door ahead of her and, as Nyx fell asleep, nestled on her shoulder and in her hair, she whispered, “Now, let’s go find our friends.””

                                  November

For a second….November was positive Vulkasin was going to suggest them actually eat horse. He blanched.

                                  Thankfully, Zlatan had interrupted him.

“The buteries vill be either on ze lowest level of zees ‘ouse, or in a separate building.” He said. November frowned and glanced at Ara.

                                  Buteries?

Ara mouthed a single word- Food.

November’s frown deepened. Walking that far on an empty stomach didn’t sound very pleasing. His stomach seemed to agree because it squeezed with sudden nausea, making his head hurt.

Zlatan must have noticed because he quickly said, “But I do ‘ave ‘vone day marching ration, if you need somfing to gnaw on untill ve can find better.”

He pulled out something wrapped in a white cloth and handed it to November. He fumbled with it, trying to get it open, and grimaced when he did.

Zlatan didn’t seem to notice, he was focused on something else, but Vulkasin seemed to be holding in a chuckle as November stared at the dried strip of meat in his hands.

He glanced at Ara, brows raised. She shrugged, offering an encouraging smile.

“You’re going to have to eat something.”

“Well, yea. But what is it?” November tilted his head.

Whatever it was definitely didn’t look too appealing, though he supposed he was too hungry to care at the moment. He frowned and took a quick bite, eyes closed.

Ara watched with concerned eyes, while Vulkasin merely grinned.

Yup. Definitely not what November would’ve chosen to eat, but at least it settled his stomach. His stomach quivered as the meat settled and he took another, albeit very small, bite. He was definitely going to eat whatever it was in small pieces.

Ara leaned over, “How does it taste?”

”Like shoe leather.” He admitted. She laughed and, Vulkasin did too, drawing his brother’s attention back to them.
