March 7, 2026 at 8:29 am #211170Looks like my lovely, long response never posted. Here goes a 2nd edition!
Look out at the thrift stores! I got mine there and I’ve seen more since.
This is brilliant. I shall do this. XD
It’s so interesting to find out what different art forms use the same supplies. XD Calligraphy nibs can range from super straight kinds that are like those Nikko Gs or very flexible like crowquill nibs and the Brause Steno (Blue Pumpkin). Chisel shaped ones are naturally pretty stiff, since you get the change of thickness from the direction the pen is turned. But I’ve found (in my rather short experience) that they’re fairly versatile so you can do a lot of different styles with just a few nibs.
Do you mean the “oblique” pen handles? Yes, they’re to help move the hand away from the line of text and are supposed to make writing with an “elegant’ slant much easier. I haven’t tried one yet, but I have my eye on a pretty glass one. XD It can apparently be a bit of a learning curve, but is easier in the long run.
Ah that makes sense. I think my control is worse with handwriting lol. I tried it once with the dip pen and decided I would just use it for drawing.
Also makes sense. XD I felt like I could memorize the movements of letters easier than those of drawing.
I tried for awhile with a felt tip calligraphy pen and it was super hard. It doesn’t have enough pressure for you to be sure when you’re making steady contact with the paper so the thin parts of the letters are hard. I do want to try it with a dip pen though!
Hmm. I hadn’t done much with markers, but I can see how that would be a problem. A dip pen would definitely change that.
woah stuff like that is so cool!
Literally my favorite sort of nerding out. XD Well, maybe besides food. It’s the getting to make stuff with history that really brings everything to life. I actually used some of their ink in a presentation on Regency/Jane Austen’s letter writing this past December. I was wearing a white dress and terrified I’d get ink on it, but thankfully, that didn’t happen. (cue Northanger Abbey book quotes about ruining fine muslin. XD)
Yeah it’s cool! I know some people make it themselves with walnuts, which sounds like a fun project.
Absolutely!
It’s like water… it doesn’t really stick or anything but I think it could be used better with a brush. I’ve used it as a wash or drip kinda thing in paintings before and it usually looks nice.
Hmm. That sounds like a neat technique. It would be pretty too, being a brown instead of a black. *sees it’s used in conjunction with watercolor techniques* *takes notes*

March 7, 2026 at 8:40 am #211171You’ve come a far way! The first comic is nice in its way, but the second is really beautifully done! The art is lovely, and I like the character/thought process in the comic. =D
I saw the little kid drawing first and went ‘Awwwwww”. Then I read your tagline and was worried. XD The others are beautiful too. Whimsical and also techy, if that makes sense.
Do you use some sort of masking fluid or ink to do the white highlights? Or do you simply avoid the places you like to highlight? I like them but usually end up accidentally painting/drawing over highlights in my own stuff.

March 7, 2026 at 8:51 am #211172Your color work is great as always. Warm colors are always my favorite, personally.
I think your guys need a therapist, let’s be real. If they had therapists, they wouldn’t have to question themselves so much and suffer from emotional whiplash.
I am out of signature ideas
March 7, 2026 at 9:32 am #211174Guys this is kind of a weird prompt, but hear me out on this. Draw yourselves. I’ve done it before but I’m trying to be more accurate to my personality in these sketches. I don’t think I’ve had so much fun drawing in a while. It’s like designing a new character without having to come up with anything.

March 7, 2026 at 9:50 am #211177Noooo!!!! I draw family and friends all the time, but I could never do myself, lol.

March 7, 2026 at 10:01 am #211178Drawing myself would be ok. I sorta know how, thanks to repeatedly drawing Omega and Huntress (both of which have a similar body type to me)
The problem is, that’s ME. I can’t post that ANYWHERE, nor do I really want to show it to my family.
Gerald handled that. You don’t question Gerald. (if you know you know)
March 7, 2026 at 11:38 am #211181I’ve drawn self portraits before, but drawing by personality is the best. I had a blast that one time I made myself into a cartoon character. But that was a year ago. I think I’ll do this. XD
Maybe instead of my children’s ministry alter ego I’ll try actually drawing myself… Hmmm. Are we supposed to share our work? I wouldn’t mind if it was by email.
