âNothing says autumn like slurpinâ apples.â -my uncle
January 4, 2023 at 11:25 pm #127866Yes! Of course đ€Ł he’s swam in that river many times before it just uh… was
different
this time…
I told the other people I shared this with he’s “Kinda ok”
Is that reassuring? Anyways, it’s the turning point in his character arc that causes him to have to face his past. Idk, I’m not sure exactly how it will unfold. But basically, he realizes he actually can’t help himself this time and has to ask for help.
YOU YEETED MY BABY? đČđ HOW COULD YOU?
NOT MY KANDY KAINE!! đ«đ„
He better have landed safely on something floofy or in somebody’s arms.
Is my baby safe?!!!!

YES HE’S MY KANDY KAINE!!!
Hmm… I wonder what happens?!
I haven’t fully decided what happens afterwards, here’s what happened though:
The part with Everly would be a lot more interesting if she is on her honeymoon with Layson (being alone would tip him over the edge) so I think he’s either going to go with Lesli or Mr. Ledger. Spoiler, Mr. Ledger is caring for Kendrick, the boy who hurt Everly. His story is a whole other thing, but the two of them basically freak out when they meet, eventually they heal from it better having met each-other though. Ok anyways, you can know what happens. XD The ending will be changed though.
Kaine rushes towards the riverbank, his mind crawling with 2 yearsâ worth of thoughts. He jumps over a fallen log, swiftly catching himself against the ground.
I feel so confused.
Kaine keeps running.
Iâm not needed anymore.
Twigs crash under his boots. Looking up, Kaine studies the distant rays of the setting autumn sun. Beautiful they might be, they barely pierce the cloud of darkness surrounding his mind. Kaine stumbles forwards towards the small river behind his shared cottage. Kaines right boot plants hard into the mushy terrain surrounding the river, and with a strong push, he goes leaping into the air over the river. Hanging in midair for a moment, Kaine waits to touch the waterâs surface.
If Iâm not needed anymore, what am I supposed to do-
Kaineâs thoughts are cut short by the cold rush of water, just as he had intended. His foot hits the water first, and his wool socks soak it up quickly. In an instant, Kaine is plunked beneath the waterâs cold surface. His clothes absorb the water quickly. Kaineâs eyes shoot open, taking in the view from underneath. Evening rays dance through the river, but overhanging trees cast dark shadows upon the surface of the water.
Ignorance is bliss.
Kaine twists under the surface, pulling his arms back towards himself. The cold water stings his skin and eyes, but he doesnât care.
Kaineâs mind remains empty, the initial shock of the cold water draining his mind to a dull numbness. He soars through the water, sending it rippleing to the side. Listening to his bodyâs protest, he surfaces in a gasp of air. Wet matted curls cling to his face, covering his eyes. He reaches up to push them away.
My fingersâŠ
Theyâre⊠going numb?
Kaine looks around frantically. The cold water sucks the last bit of warmth from him as he reaches for the bank.
Donât panic. Youâve done this beforeâŠright?
Kaineâs heart rate picks up in time with a furious shiver that runs down his back. He heaves himself up onto the bank, suddenly feeling much chillier than before, even though out of the water. Kaine glances around frantically, trying to kick his brain into gear.
Iâm coldâŠ
Iâm cold! Right.
What should I do?
Kaine looks down from his cold hands, to his soaked through boots. He looks back at the sun, only a few rays escaping from above the horizon. The tree branches leave blue hued shadows along the ground.
Home. Thatâs it. I need to go home and war-
Kaine wraps his arms around himself as another shiver racks his focus. Breaking into a heavy run, he tries to ignore the cold.
Just get inside. Just get inside.
Kaine trips over the same log he had jumped a moment ago. A sharp sting travels up his leg, but he quickly brushes himself off and keeps running. Twigs snap underway as he clumsily tromps through the forest into a small clearing. Approaching a small cottage, Kaine makes a run for the door, but not before glancing both left and right out of habit.
I suppose it looks safe.
Kaineâs teeth clack uncomfortably against each other as he shivers uncontrollably.
OhâŠno. I feel like something isnât right.
Kaine swallows hard. Swinging open the door, he surveys the familiar surroundings.
Everly isnât home yet. Thatâs probably good. I donât want her thinking thereâs something wrong with me.
Kaine shuts the door behind him and makes his way over to his dresser. He changes into dry clothes, leaving his wet ones on the floor in a heap. Another shiver comes and goes, but this time he clenches his teeth so they canât rattle. Kaine rubs his arms furiously. Coming over to the fire, he sits beside it. Kaine tosses in a few pieces of wood by the side, and the flames cover them shortly. The cottage fills with a warm orange glow from the fireplace. Scooting onto a fur rug, Kaine lays down. His eyes threaten to close with tiredness, but he keeps them open, still concerned about his low temperature.
âFluffy!â Kaine calls into the house. A large white cat comes traipsing into the living room.
âCâmere.â Kaine gathers the cat up in his arms before laying down again. Her warm fur brushes against his cold skin, but it isnât enough to stop a shiver. Fluffy licks Kaineâs face in concern, and he squeezes her a little tighter.
Iâm startingâŠ
To get concerned.
Kaine tries to fight back tears, but a couple flow down his face, dripping down onto the fur below him. He watches in fascination as flames lick the ceiling of the fireplace. Another shiver interrupts his thoughts, this one lasting longer than the one before. More tears flow down Kaineâs face.
How do I fix this? I guess that was a mistake. Itâs getting too late in the year to be in the river water.
Kaine shivers again, his face hard pressed into the scratchy fur. Fluffy inches forwards and licks his cheek before settling in next to him.
âThanks kitty.â Kaine wraps his arms around her once more, pulling her closer.
He rubs his face into the fur on the back of her neck, trying to catch any heat possible off of his furry friend. The door clicks, and footsteps approach. Kaine wipes his tears away quickly, but the fire illuminates the shiny residue they leave behind. He closes his eyes, pretending to be asleep. He listens. A small thud follows the footsteps.
She set down her bagâŠ
The footsteps approach behind him. Kaine slows his breathing to mimic sleep. The footsteps stop, right next to him. Kaine tries to remain statue still, but a furious shiver blows his cover.
âOh!â Everly jumps in surprise.
Kaineâs eyelids flutter open.
I guess itâs no secret now. And either way, I donât want to feel like Iâm lying to my sister.
He cringes.
I guess thereâs no way out of this now.
âHey kiddo!â Everlyâs soft voice approaches as she sits down next to him.
Kaine breaks out into another shiver. He waits it out, not looking at Everly once.
âWoah! What happened?â Everly fingers Kaineâs sopping wet hair.
Oops. I forgot to dry my hair.
âKaine?!â Everly puts a hand on his face. âOh! You are so cold!â She stares into his eyes with concern.
Kaine closes his eyes again, unsure of what to say and hopeful to avoid her concerned gaze.
I donât like that look on her face.
Kaine squeezes his eyes shut, hoping that maybe it was all a dream, and falling asleep would shake him out of it. It was hopeless. Everly puts her arms around Kaine, bringing him up to a sitting position.
âYou going to tell me what happened?â
Kaine shakes his head, meeting her eyes for the first time.
âNo?â Everly pauses. âThatâs a no?â
Kaine crumples into himself, covering his face with his hands. Tears flow down his cheeks as another shiver racks his body.
âHoney!â Everly hold him closer. âWhy?â
Kaine says nothing, but continues to cry.
âYouâre not going to tell me?â Everly says, her voice almost becoming a plea.
âN-no.â Kaine cries harder. âI canât warm up though.â
Everly gets up, and Kaine listens with sadness as her footsteps grow distant. He lays down again, settling his face into the fur again.
I donât even care anymore. I suppose I got what I wanted. I forgot about everything, and now Iâm paying the price. Ignorance isnât free.
Kaineâs eyes open suddenly at the feeling of his head being picked up off the floor. Everly shoves a pillow underneath and sets to work drying his curls with a hand towel.
âThanks.â Kaine says quietly.
âMhm!â Everly holds his head up to reach the other side.
Another shiver rattles Kaine, and he reaches his arms around himself to try to calm it. Everly puts the towel down and waits for it to pass, but it keeps going. Kane watches a sad look enter her eyes. She reaches forward, putting her hands against Kaineâs cold face. He looks up, only now noticing the tears in her eyes. Kaine puts his hands on top of hers. They feel unbelievably warm.
âKaine⊠you are so cold!â Everly ignores the tear rolling down her face. âSweetheart! Please tell me what happened!â
Kaine cringes at her use of âsweetheartâ.
She only says that when sheâs really emotional about something.
âIâm so sorry this is making you sad.â Kaine says, his voice trembling. âI didnât mean for it to affect you.â
Everlyâs face falls slightly. âYou⊠caused this?â
Kaine stiffens, ignoring the shiver that runs up his back. He nods slowly, looking down at the floor. Everlyâs face turns unbearably sad. Kaineâs face contorts with tears again, but this time because of his sister. She gets up and walks over to the kitchen as Kaine settles back into the fur with fluffy clutched tightly to his chest.
What would have happened if I hadnât done that? It feels like something inside me⊠I donât know⊠needed to be released? Itâs not quite anger, I have no one to be angry at. Nothing quite sad has happened, I should be very glad Everly is doing better and making friends. Itâs me though. Where do I fit in all this.
Kaine opens his eyes. Warm steam rises up from a cup of tea held out in front of him.
âO-oh.â Kaine slowly takes it. âThanks.â He sits upright, holding the mug with both hands. Kaine shivers again, sending tea splashing onto the fur and fluffy. She jumps up, confused. Kaine looks up at Everly.
âI-Iâm sorry. I r-really didnât want this to become a problem for you. I-I think I can deal with it.â Kaine stutters.
âYou think. Iâm not so sure.â Everly sits down beside him, draping a soft blanket over his shoulders.
Guilt mounts inside Kaine with every show of care. He sips the tea, looking into the fire with fascination. A burning sensation fills his throat with each sip, but the temperature is perfection.
âDoing okay?â Everly puts the blanket back around Kaineâs shoulderâs which had fallen off.
âI suppose.â Kaine says, another shiver racking his body.
He reaches up to set the tea on the counter next to him. Kaine ignore Everlyâs longing glance.
She⊠really wants to know.
Everly reaches for the towel again. Draping it over his head, she ruffles his curls in it.
His hair got wet. I think he was wet before I came home. He was crying, what else?
What causes that
âKaine! You fell in the river, didnât you.â Everly says.
âKind of.â Kaine shifts uneasily. âY-you donât have to do this for me.â
âWhat? Dry your hair?â
âAnd give me tea and stuff.â Kaine looks down at the wooden floor slats. âItâs not your fault Iâm cold, and Itâs wasting your time.â
Everly gives him a quizzical look, then continues drying his hair. âWell, it wasnât your fault I was injured, or attacked, whatever you want to call it, and you took much more extensive care of me than whatever Iâm doing here. Besides, I basically raised you, and Iâm not going to watch from a distance while you shiver helplessly by the fire.â She pulls the towel off of his head and sets it aside.
Kaine shuffles uneasily at the mention of her accident. He rubs his arms, trying to warm up.
âFluffy! Hey, câmere.â Everly picks up the cat and hands her to Kaine. âHere, hold the kitty.â
Kaine picks up Fluffy and holds her close, closing his eyes on the image of the warm fire. He feels Everlyâs arm around him as he drifts off to sleep.
Kaine wakes up the next morning on the same fur he had fallen asleep on, but now laying down. About 4 more blankets than he had fallen asleep with were neatly laid on top of him. Staring up at the wooden support beams in the ceiling, Kaine breaths in the smell of breakfast cooking. He listens as Everly walks around the kitchen, causing the flooring to creak. Kaine looks to the side, noticing something squishy under his arm.
Matty!
Kaine hugs his stuffed fox Matty.
WhatâŠ
âEverly?â Kaine says groggily.
âYeah?â
âIâm wearing your rabbit fur hat.â
âYou are!â
Kaine smiles, only now noticing his hair was not just dry, but combed.
âWell.â Everly sits down beside him with her breakfast. âYou want to tell me what happened?â
Kaine sits up against the counter wall and looks over at her.
âSure.â He smiles, the tears welling in his eyes feeling relieved. Kaine gives his stuffed fox a slight squeeze before starting at the beginning.
Ok so that’s the ideal ending so we don’t feel too sad đ I need to rewrite it, and it’s going to be a lot longer. I think I need to change it because Kaine is going to need to reach somebody outside of Everly. It’s always been them, and honestly I don’t think she could understand what he’s going through.
"And so I left this world just as I had entered it. Confused."
