Does anyone have ideas for drawing a character with a rough clothing fashion, without making them look edgy?

December 15, 2024 at 4:15 pm #192082Depends on what you mean as rough, and the time period.
If you mean worn; mismatched/replaced buttons, fraying hems, taped glasses, scuffed but clean shoes, fraying laces.
If you mean hardworking: muddy shoes, rolled cuffs, denim, flannel, holes in pockets/knees, strapped gloves.
If you mean from the hood? Worn clothing, denim, T-shirt, loose jacket, hoodie, sneakers. Clothing to blend in, not stand out (like seriously. What do people wear in the worser area around wherever you live?)
If you want to avoid edginess, try to avoid dark colors. And excessive leather. And what about regular shoes (or even twinkle toes. That’ll definitely take the edginess down a few notches. XD). Avoid excessive hairstyles and graphic T-shirts. Also…buckles. like, how many buckles does a regular human being actually wear?

It’s actually not quite done but I wanted to share it anyway cuz he so cute and I’m very happy with it so far. Oh, but ignore his right hand. Some things just don’t click.
He is my quiet observant pessimistic almost-heartless cold boyy Sverre…
INTP.

Fork the GorkDecember 23, 2024 at 1:49 pm #192746Almost all my characters have some kind of rough fashion throughout there timeline!
If you mean the same thing as I do when I draw that here’s what I try to do:Imo, Edgy is when you’re trying to look a specific way for aesthetic, and rough is when it happens naturally. Like pants naturally get holes in them, but if somebody has holes on the thighs you know they are fake. Rough seams and edges of holes in the knees happen naturally from wear, or from a characters rough lifestyle.
I actually saw a really interesting video about micro trends recently (excuse my rant, I must) pointing out that when people hop onto a micro trend, it sometimes feel in-authentic because the person isn’t fully living the lifestyle.
If I were on ticktock, and saw a girl who was totally nailing the clean girl aesthetic and wanting to try it myself, I could copy her. But even if I do the same makeup, get a nice workout outfit, and pretend I eat salads all the time, I’m not expressing myself unless I’m living the lifestyle that warrants the salads, workout clothes, ect. Instead of expressing myself, I’m just copying how she expresses herself. And for all I know, she’s copying the original trendsetter.
Ok so anyways, my point is that if you’re character has a personality that warrants rough clothes, it won’t be edgy, because they aren’t trying to be ‘edgy’ they are just expressing the personality you gave them.
I think it helps a lot to have the roughness spread over all the clothes instead of concentrated on a couple pieces too. Everything should be in different stages of wear. Like maybe the glasses are new, but the bag is 10 years old and a little rough, and the jeans are ripped on the knees. Maybe the hat is just starting to fray. Having everything be a little bit to medium warn is imo more realistic than one ‘rough’ statement piece, because that’s what they sell in stores.
Also I don’t think stains are gross as long as they don’t look like they came from food XD
My interpretation of ‘rough’ might be different from what yours is but that’s what I try to do.
Also buying jeans that aren’t ripped naturally is totally fine I’ve done it before 😂 I just think natural wear is never ‘edgy’ so it’s a pretty safe place to be.

December 23, 2024 at 2:09 pm #192750It is a cute piece. I like it. It’s an unusual style. I keep going back to look at it. 🙂
I agree with Min and Koshka. Looks like you have some good ideas there.

December 23, 2024 at 2:18 pm #192753Y’all. I’m so excited. XD I did a tag for my sister’s present (name blocked by a tube of watercolor), and I really like how it turned out. It’s taken me months of sporadic fiddling, but I finally got up the nerve to put watercolor on a person like this.
