It’s two wings with two layers each. It would be four, but they are fused together at the ends (Yes they do fold and unfold I’ve tested it with a paper model lol)
hmm for a couple reasons actually. Flax has to be super lightweight to fly for one. Usually winged creatures in books are just people with wings, but realistically that doesn’t actually work. He has hollow bones, and a lot less muscle mass than humans do, meaning he can’t walk long distances (Usually he would fly). He is a little underweight because of his sickness (Same one that’s causing him to lose feathers) but being thin is normal for his species. If he doesn’t have excess weight it’s kinda hard to conceal the giant shoulder blades that were necessary for the wing design I made.
I think on top of that some of it is just my way of physically showing the emotions of the book. I really want Flax to encompass the saying ‘broken but beautiful’ and for some reason this way of drawing him just does that (Or at least I think it does).

also, as a person who likes making biologically accurate stuff, his species being naturally thin makes sense. I imagine the only sizable muscle mass would be in his chest and back to operate the wings.

oh actually because he doesn’t fly leaving it as it is might not be a problem, he just needs muscles that hold up his wings.

The four wings connected design is cool; I have four-winged characters but the second pair is always separate.

That sounds like a good idea, and a whole lot of fun too.
I’ve considered biologically adjusting my own two-to-six-winged character. He already had a fixed design and I was loath to change it, and anyway, the wings are magical and not naturally occurring. I included the strong shoulder and chest muscles though, since that would probably develop regardless of biology as long as he’s exercising.

Cool! Yeah I think for me the idea of four wings came from one of the really cool dragons in httyd 2.

Definitely depletes his body energy, and his body also needs a steadily higher income of energy the more he uses the power. It’s a symbiotic relationship between him and the magic, but it can tighten its hold on him and become the dominant life force… If that makes sense? 😅
