cause like American fiction often defaults to sticking a slouch hat on a character when they want to make him obviously Australian, or at least a guy from a desert-y kinda place.

He doesn’t have an Australian accent, he just always wears an Australian army slouch hat for whatever reason.

His name is Sergeant Sam Troy, played by Christopher George. He leads a small band of three other men, who all together make up the Rat Patrol. and he’s not the only one who wears a weird hat for no apparent reason. Hitch wears a French foreign legion hat, and he’s obviously American. Sergeant Moffet is British. The only one who’s kinda normal is Private Tully.

It’s a great tv show, if you don’t mind shows set in WWII africa. Obviously there’s some violence and things, but I don’t remember much being bad about it.
