So to anyone who is interested @whalekeeper might be 😀 , I have been working on my book pretty hard lately. (I don’t have to much time to write since we now own a kind of farm.) A half of page to a page a day is pretty good for me 🙂 Here is a little piece of my book. It takes place after all the power in the world goes out.
All down the freeway were broken cars and trucks. People were standing next to their cars, sitting on the roof and hoods, sitting inside. Everyone looked panicked, worried and confused. Some people were crying, throwing tantrums, laughing, and even singing.
One woman in the sea of cars stood out to me. She was wearing a dress the color of the ocean, sobbing, clutching an envelope to her chest. “Oh Ryan! Ryan.” She screamed, flinging her one free arm towards the sky before crumpling to the ground. I couldn’t bear to see a person in so much pain so I ran over to comfort her.
The woman didn’t see me approach and flinched when I touched her shoulder. Her turquoise eyes startled me, they were so bright.
“Are, are you alright?” I asked calmly.
She opened her mouth in shock. “You are asking me if I’m ok?”
I nodded, confused.
“Thank you! It’s so nice to know some people in the world care for me.”
I smiled. “Yes we care. Are you alright?”
“No. I am not. My husband, Ryan, is in the hospital. I was called by the hospital and they told me he was injured in a car crash before all this power outage happened. He is feeling better, but I would like to see him.” She broke down sobbing. I gently leaned down and gave her a hug.
“It will be OK.” I said, not knowing what else to say. This was difficult to answer.
She sobbed into her arms for a few more seconds so I sat there with her. Listening to the sounds of other people and the wind.
“My name is Shauna Smith. What is yours?” I asked, hoping to change the subject to a happier note.
“Marjorie Eastman.” She proudly stated. “I am trying to get to Windy Pines.”
“Windy Pines?” That’s where we live! It isn’t that far from here. We were only driving for a few hours until we got here. You should be able to walk there in a day or so.”
The woman smiled, “You know Shauna honey. I might just do that.”
She stood up, legs shaking under her. Her black hair sparkled in the sunlight.
“I will go now, thank you dear. I hope you and those young men you’re traveling with reach your destination.” She scrunched her eyes shut as if she was thinking hard. “Take this, you may need it more than I will.” She shoved the envelope into my hand, gave me a quick smile and hurriedly began to walk down the freeway. I watched her walk until she was just a speck in the distance.
I stood there in shock. It happened so fast. One moment she was there and the next she was gone. It made me sad to know that I would probably never see Marjorie Eastman again.
Hugo and Sam walked over to me.
“Who was that?” Hugo asked.
“What’s in the envelope?” Sam questioned, nudging my arm gently.
Deftly, I opened the envelope, still staring into the distance. Sticking my hand in the envelope I felt more paper with a creamy texture. I heard Sam and Hugo gasp and looked down to see what I was holding. The envelope was full of money.
Thats all of this scene I have written so far, I’ll post more later!

Soooo….I wrote this extra thing (don’t know if it’ll ever make it into anything, lol!) for Leon/Riker…
😉💖
Leon’s part actually did make me cry a little because of #Spoilers
August 1934
Germany
Iris peeled potatoes, and Riker did the same beside her.
“Riker, do you think my art could be in a museum?”
Riker faced his twelve-year-old sister, a small knife still in hand. He smiled softly. “I think it could.”
“It most certainly could, darling,” Jennie patted ten-month-old Jonathan’s back, “and you may just be a world-renowned German artist.”
Angelina smiled brightly. She set aside her sketchbook and turned to Jennie. “Can I hold Jonathan…please? I’ll be careful!”
Jennie smiled. “Sit on the floor, baby girl, and then yes, you can hold your little nephew.”
Angelina plopped down on the living room carpet. Jennie gently transferred Jonathan to Angelina’s arms. Jonathan stirred but didn’t wake.
Angelina awed over her nephew.
Riker glanced at his wife and smiled. “She’s a proud aunt.”
Iris chuckled, laying another peeled potato in a pot. “A very proud aunt.”
A door slammed open, and Riker jumped a little.
Iris cast a worried frown his way, just as Franz walked into the living room, still dressed in a hat and coat, followed by a friend of his.
Jennie stood. “Franz, I thought you wouldn’t be home until later…and, oh, Hans! I didn’t know you would be coming this evening…”
“Don’t mean to intrude, but Franz and I heard news while we were out in town.”
Franz nodded towards the radio, in agreement with Hans. “Turn the radio on, Jennie.”
Jennie moved to obey, silently turning on the radio.
Riker squeezed Iris’ hand. President Paul von Hindenberg, president of Germany, had died over two weeks ago…and elections had been in place to elect a new President.
The newscaster went on and on.
“What is he talking about?” Angelina asked.
Iris gently placed a finger to her lips, signaling for Angelina to be quiet.
“…The votes have been counted…”
Riker squeezed his wife’s hand.
Nothing would be different for their family…they’d be fine…they all would.
Right?
“And the new president of Germany has been elected…the new president of Germany is…”
Iris closed her eyes.
Riker did the same.
Because much as he wished it wouldn’t…maybe this would alter their lives…their family.
“…Adolf Hitler.”
~*~
Almost the whole family was gathered around the radio.
Aunt Sarah and Uncle Israel.
Uncle Zephaniah.
Uncle Abraham and Aunt Salome.
Leon’s several cousins.
Leon sat beside his father on the couch, holding his father’s hand.
Josef wrapped his arms around Leon, and Leon leaned into his father’s embrace.
The newscaster talked about the election…and the outcome.
Adolf Hitler was elected President of Germany.
Zephaniah turned the radio off. “How did that man get elected?”
“Zephaniah…you know many of the German people support him,” Israel’s eyebrows furrowed together, “and I’m certain this will all work out.”
Israel, as Leon’s father’s oldest brother, always tried to look on the bright side of things to encourage the rest of the family.
Salome stood. “Let’s not focus on the bad, everyone. We can all have a meal and be a family…let’s not have this bad news bring all of us down. We all trust God, do we not?”
“Of course,” Sarah stood, “so let’s all head into the dining room and enjoy time together as a family. Tomorrow is Shabbat, but for now, let us spend time together as a family.”
Leon’s uncles, two aunts, and several cousins left the room, leaving only him and his father.
As Christians, Leon and his father went to a church, not the Synagogue, on Sundays rather than Saturday, and they believed a little differently from the rest of their family.
Leon leaned further into his father’s embrace.
“Abba…will this change anything for us?”
Josef’s hands gently ran through Leon’s soft black curls. “I’m sure it will, son…but it will be alright. We trust God, and he will carry us, just as he has promised.”
“The Bible says God works all things together for good…but is it true, Abba?”
“Very true, my son. No matter what you go through, Leon, remember these words,” Josef gently raised Leon’s chin; their matching dark brown eyes met, “God is always good.”
Leon leaned forward, burying his face in his father’s chest. “I will remember those words, Abba.”
Josef laid a hand on Leon’s head. “I know you will.” He kissed the top of Leon’s head.
His father’s words continued to echo in his head.
God is good…always.

Here’s some of my writing lately! It might seem familiar, it’s a rewrite of a old scene I changed a little bit.
Lesli perks up in her bed, the sound of voices alerting her. Her mom’s voice carries a worrying edge as she speaks, her words drifting and fumbling as they hit her bedroom door. She waits, listening for the response.
It’s probably nothing.
She lays her head back down against the pillow, closing her eyes slightly. Another voice sounds, this time deeper. Harsher, just a little. Lesli sits up again. She slowly creeps towards the door. More voices sound, but she can barely make out the words. They sound harsh, frustrated, jumbled, fumbled, overlapping… Lesli squints, trying to shut out the realization.
It’s not over yet.
“I think they’ll get it figured out. I really do. That’s what relationships are—we pull through for each other, right? Even when we don’t agree.”
“And besides… a promise is forever. I don’t think they’ll break that easily.”
Lesli tries to be reassured by Tauren’s words from the week before, but an uneasy feeling looms nonetheless. She waits in the desperate silence, waiting for the next voice to sound. Hopeful it will be different this time. Forgiving? Maybe kind? Understanding? Lesli listens, the words coming into focus as her vision blurs.
“This isn’t about you and me!” Martha’s voice cracks. “It’s about our famil—”
“—It’s about her future.”
Lesli cringes.
Oh. So, it’s about me now.
“He wants what’s best for you… we both do. But… I guess we disagree on what that is.”
Lesli pulls her knees up to her chest, hugging them tightly on the floor of her bedroom. Her eyes wander the room, from her old and stained pink bedspread to the sparingly filled closet, holding all her favorite sweaters and dresses. Her stomach grumbles.
No! Not now!
Lesli clenches her fists in frustration.
I’m not eating dinner at an ice cold table. I’d be surprised if we’re even eating together at all tonight… and I can’t eat in my room.
Should I eat in the bathroom? That feels gross.
Lesli lets out a frustrated sigh as her stomach grumbles again. She stands, reaching for her worn leather satchel. She slings it over her shoulder, a frown setting on her face. Lesli opens her bedroom door, being careful not to breach the silence. She cringes as it squeaks slightly. She walks on light feet over to the bathroom, looking through the mirror into her tired eyes and tear streaked face. She wets the hand towel under hot water, using it to clean off her face. Lesli pretends to smile in the mirror, the sides of her mouth going up awkwardly and uneven.
I’m pretty bad at fake smiles.
Maybe if I did it enough, it’d look real.
Lesli straightens back her braids, pushing a couple stray hairs back into her bangs. She takes a deep breath, opening the door and entering the livingroom. The hallway floorboards creak, giving her away. Martha looks up slowly, her tired eyes meeting Lesli’s. She tries a smile, but then looks back down.
“I’ll be back in a little while.” Lesli says, her voice cracking unexpectedly.
“Have fun.” Martha nods, the worried expression on her face setting into her wrinkles.
“Thanks.” Lesli replies in a small voice, walking out the front door and locking it behind her. She wipes her eyes against the red sleeve of her sweater one last time, standing up straight and confident on the Faulkner’s doorstep. Lesli feels her heart ache at the sound of warm laughter splitting through the door.
“You can’t eat that!” Aleshia laughs. “It’s still raw!”
Lesli knocks on the door, shifting nervously on the faded welcome rug.
Dishes clank. “Tauren!” Aleshia fake scolds as heavy footsteps pound through the kitchen. “Where are you goin’ with that?!”
Lesli knocks again, this time louder.
“Tauren, would you get that?”
Heavy footsteps pound towards the door. Lesli smiles as Tauren opens it. His eyes brighten as he reaches an arm towards Lesli, wrapping it around her neck.
“Hey! Look what I got!” Tauren laughs, pulling Lesli inside. “Just when the day couldn’t get any better.” He shoves the last of his cookie dough into his mouth.
“Hey buddy.” Lesli squeezes Tauren’s shoulder from the side.
“We’re helping mom make cookies.” Tauren takes his arm from around Lesli and sets the spoon down on the table. “She probably doesn’t want four of us in there though. You just came to hang out?”
“Oh, I uh… Lesli pauses. “Was just wondering what was on the dinner menu actually.”
“Oh…” Tauren peeks into the kitchen. “Cookies.”
“No no no!” Aleshia says, tossing a batter covered spoon into the sink. “Veggies first! It’s green beans and chicken soup. You’re welcome to join us, Lesli.”
“Oh! I’d really like that, thanks.” Lesli says quietly, setting her bag on one of the dining room chairs. She walks over to follow Tauren into the kitchen, who hands her a bowl. “This smells really good.” Lesli says, leaning over the chicken soup. She pours a couple ladles into her bowl and sits back down at the table.
Tauren sits down next to her, digging into his food. Lesli scoots her chair a little closer to his, to which he smiles. Tauren turns towards Lesli with a frustrated sigh as his glasses fog over from the heat of the soup. She laughs slightly.
“How are you doin?” Tauren asks, taking off his glasses.
“Alright I guess.” Lesli’s smile fades.
“Still not liking your new job?” Tauren whispers so his mom doesn’t hear.
“No yeah…” Lesli shakes her head. “How’s your work?”
“Not bad… I surveyed in the outer reaches with Layson. He’s got to be the most enthusiastic sparker in existence.”
“Oh yeah?” Lesli says, taking a bite of her soup.
Aleshia sits down at the table across from Lesli. “He said we can start.” She gestures back to Desmond in the kitchen. Metal clanks in the kitchen as he slides the cookie rack into the oven.
“Ok! That’ll be good.” Desman sighs as he sits down at the table.
Lesli holds her cup of soup close to her face, enjoying the warm steam. She takes a couple more bites, barely listening to the general table chatter between Tauren’s parents.
“Is there too much salt in there?”
“No, I love it!”
“It’s really good Mom, thanks.”
“Well, I think I altered the recipe slightly since last time and I thought all of you would give the best objective opinion.”
“It’s great.”
“Really? Thanks. I’ll have to write it down.”
“Let’s see… I used a ¼ teaspoon of…”
Lesli’s thoughts drift back to her home. The coldness of the room after an argument, the still and stressed look on her mother’s face, and the sadness she felt at seeing her parents at odds. Lesli stares into her near empty cup. Her vision turns blurry again. Lesli sucks in her breath, blinking back a few tears.
“What was that?”
Voices echoe from the other side of the kitchen wall.
No no no no…
Lesli braces herself as more voices carry over from the room nextdoor. Shouting, slowly growing. Not that loud… but louder… louder… Lesli cringes.
“Just the neighbors yelling or…” Tauren pauses, raising an eyebrow at Lesli. “Something… like that.” He says softer.
Lesli doesn’t look up. Aleshia frowns, looking over at Lesli with pity. “Oh…” She almost speaks but stops herself. Lesli drinks the rest of her soup, pushing the cup forwards. She stares emptily at the table, trying not to engage in the awkward silence. Tauren takes her cup and his bowl to the kitchen.
“Thanks…”
“Yep.” Tauren says quietly.
“I should… go home.” Lesli stands, lifting her satchel onto her shoulder.
“Whatever you want honey.” Aleshia takes her and Desmans bowls to the kitchen.
“Thanks for having me.” Lesli awkwardly walks towards the door.
“Sure!”
“I’ll walk out with her.” Tauren shares a glance with his mom. She smiles.
“Sounds good. I’ll see you in a bit Lesli!”
“Bye!” Desmond shouts from the kitchen, having recovered from the awkwardness of before.
“Bye!” Lesli says. She clutches her bag against her side, feeling exhausted and ready to fall apart.
Tauren shuts the door behind him, leaving the two of them in the hallway. “What’s going on?” he rushes up beside her, looking concerned.
“Everything… “Lesli feels tears well in her eyes. “And… so fast too.”
“It’s weird… falling out is something that’s supposed to happen to other people.” She looks up at Tauren. “I always thought somehow we loved harder, were stronger than them… but… we’re no different.”
Tauren nods, taking a step closer to Lesli.
“I I—” Lesli breathes deeply. “I think it’s a lot more than that though… it’s just I wish I could rewind time—before the earthquake, before I left the mines, just—be younger again.” Lesli sniffs, wiping her face against her sweater sleeve.
“I’d give anything just to go back.” She sniffs, trying to catch her breath.
Tauren hands her his handkerchief.
“Oh– thanks…” Lesli smiles faintly.
“Can I give you a hug?” Tauren asks, watching as Lesli dabs tears from her eyes.
“Yeah.” Lesli nods, stuffing the handkerchief into her pocket.
Tauren wraps his arms around Lesli, holding her close. She sniffs, resting her head on his chest. Tauren gently brushes back her stray hair, holding her head with his hand.
“I’m sorry it’s hard.” He whispers quietly, holding her tightly.
Lesli sniffs, pulling out the handkerchief to blow her nose and then putting it back again. She settles back into Tauren’s arms, wrapping hers around the back of his waist.
“I just want to run away sometimes.” Lesli sighs, her voice breaking.
“And where would you go?” Tauren brushes her bangs back against her head as she turns up to look at him.
“Someplace far away.” Lesli smiles wistfully.
“And that would make me so sad.” He leans down to kiss her hair.
“Not if you came with me.” Lesli smiles wide, pressing the side of her face against his shoulder. “Every proper adventurous needs a companion, right?”
“What’s the fun in seeing something grand if you have nobody to share it with?”
“I dunno.” Tauren pauses, looking into Lesli’s eyes. “I have something to share with you.”
“Is it grand?” Lesli jokes, smiling wide.
“Perhaps, one might say. I’ll be back in a second.” Tauren promptly disappears back into the unit, coming back out with his hands behind his back.
“Just for you.” He holds the same flower he found in the mines, though looking a good deal more worn. “I call it the mineflower.”
“Ohhh!” Lesli looks at it with curiosity.
“It’s yours!”
“Thanks?!” Lesli takes it with a smile, looking at the strange seeds. “I’ve never seen anything like it before!”
“I thought you might find it interesting.” Tauren stands proudly, watching as Lesli examines the specimen.
“I do!” Lesli laughs. “You say you found this in the mines?”
“Yep. In the outer reaches.”
“How curious! I do believe that isn’t supposed to exist.” Lesli gasps. “Plants can’t grow without proper lights! Everyone knows that.”
“Special plant for a special girl!” Tauren gives Lesli a squeeze around the shoulder from the side. “I’ll let you go on home now.”
“Oh ok. Thanks! I’m naming him Alfred.” Lesli shouts as she walks back down the hall towards her house.
“Don’t name him! He has a limited lifespan!”
“That’s ok! I’ll love him anyways!” Lesli says with a laugh, opening the door to her unit. Tauren smiles, watching as she disappears, staring intently at her new friend.
