So, she needs a name? Do you need help finding her a name or do you prefer looking for them yourself? (I totally understand if you do. I’m kinda that way myself)

I’m not even sure what “DM” stands for……
But yeah, I write stuff on notebooks cause I only get a limited amount of time on the computer, so I can write a lot more on physical paper.

Just wrote this scene in my main WIP and wanted to share…💕💕😭
Riker shifted from where he was in his position standing against the wall.
Conversation rose to the air after dinner, but truthfully? He wanted no part in it.
Exhaustion threatened to make him pass out right where he stood, but Riker fought it back.
Falling asleep right now would be one of the worst things he could do.
His father laughed as he conversed with the other guests. Hans and Felix came along with their wives, who were in the kitchen talking to Jennie and Angelina.
Riker yawned and stumbled, but he caught himself before anyone even noticed.
He couldn’t let anyone see that he was exhausted.
He couldn’t let anyone know what he had been doing last night.
Most of them would be against it. His mother and Angelina were the only people he would even think about trusting with such dangerous information, and even then, he wouldn’t do it. He was unwilling to put their lives at risk.
“Riker,” Franz held up an empty glass, “get me another drink from the kitchen.”
“We’re supposed to say please,” Naja would sweetly remind her grandfather if she were here.
But she wasn’t, and Riker wasn’t going to make the mistake of making his father angry.
Riker walked further into the living room, taking the glass from his father’s hands.
He walked into the small kitchen, apologizing when he had to squeeze past his sister and Felix’s’ wife, Frida.
Riker checked the counters but didn’t see a bottle.
Jennie turned, raised an eyebrow, and smiled gently, pausing her conversation with Hans’ wife, Eleanor. “Riker, is there something you’re looking for, darling?”
“A drink for father. Do you know where-?”
“You’ll have to get a new one out of the cabinet,” Angelina shrugged, “since they already drank all of the first two bottles.”
“Thanks.”
“Angelina, why don’t you help your brother? Eleanor, Frida, shall we join the men in the living room?”
Frida nodded, adjusting the shawl she wore over her long evening gown. “I believe we should.”
The three women left, and Angelina pulled a bottle out of a cabinet. “…Alcoholics, all of them except for Mother…maybe they should stop drinking…maybe it’d make them better people.”
“Ang, careful.”
“What are they going to do? They could at least try to be decent people, but no, they have to be horrible. That woman, Frida…something’s really off about her.”
Riker popped open the bottle and tried to ignore the nauseating smell of alcohol. “Ang-“
Angelina sighed. “Alright…you’re right. I shouldn’t judge these people…I know that. But Lord help me because those people need Jesus.”
Riker tried to fight back a smirk at his younger sister’s attitude and words, but he failed.
Angelina faced him and laughed. “What are you smirking about?” She adjusted her navy-blue women’s suit and slightly adjusted her curled, black bob. “Do I look funny or something?”
Riker chuckled and shook his head. “No, but you sound funny.”
“Just because you’re my older brother doesn’t mean you have a right to tease me, you know.”
“Mmm, I think I actually did get that right when you were born.”
Angelina scoffed and socked his arm. Unladylike? Maybe. But Riker laughed anyways.
Riker poured drink into his father’s glass and nudged his sister’s side with his other elbow. “Come on, we should probably get into the living room now.”
Angelina raised a playful grin. “Can’t we just stay here and hide? I can only stand those people for so long…minus Mother.”
Riker grabbed the glass. “Oh, come on.”
“You know, just because you’re older by seven years doesn’t mean you can boss me around.” Angelina protested, but she smirked and followed him.
Riker walked into the living room, Angelina trailing right behind, and handed his father the glass.
Franz’s eyes slightly narrowed. “Took you long enough.”
Riker bit his lip. “Sorry father.”
“Why don’t you take a seat rather than standing against the wall, Riker? I’m sure your father wouldn’t mind you joining into the conversations, or at least I would assume.” Felix mused, taking a sip of his own drink.
Franz shook his head. “I don’t mind.”
Riker sat down on the rug, the only seat left open, and Angelina settled down beside him, gently smoothing down her skirt.
Riker raised one knee to his chest and let the other leg spread out in front of him, taking his usually preferred position when he sat on the floor.
“How is work going, Hans?”
“Wonderful, Franz. I have been transferred somewhere else, and I do not believe I have told you this, but Riker is one of the men under my command now.”
Franz raised an eyebrow. “What of the man that was previously in charge of him that I met?”
“Ah, well,” Hans picked a piece of lint off his uniform jacket, “Fin turned out to be a traitor to the Fatherland…he had to be gotten rid of.”
Like a punch to the gut, but Riker forced the pain down.
“And has Riker done well?”
“For now…but things may change. Work takes up much time.”
“Then darling,” Eleanor squeezed her husband’s hand and looked into his coal eyes with her own green, “why don’t we relax while we’re here visiting,” Eleanor turned to face Riker’s mother, “so is there anything enjoyable we could do, Jennie?”
“Music, perhaps?” Frida added, glancing at her sister-in-law, and Eleanor smiled and nodded.
“Yes, that would be perfect.”
Jennie blinked a couple times. “I don’t believe we have a record player…we haven’t been able to buy one.”
“It’s a miracle we can afford anything, all the drinks Father has to have every single day of his life.” Angelina mumbled, but Riker seemed to be the only one that heard her.
Jennie’s gaze shifted, and her dark blue eyes met Riker’s. “Darling…would it bother you to play the violin for us?”
The instrument he knew how to play…yet hadn’t played in years. He hadn’t even brought it to the apartment he and Iris bought several years back. His own wife didn’t even know he played violin.
But how could he ignore his mother’s gentle request?
Riker slowly rose to his feet. “Of course, Mama, but where is it?”
“On the mantel, darling. I put it up there.”
Riker walked over to the fireplace, gently dusting off the top of the violin case with his hand.
He set the case on the arm of the couch, beside his mother, and gently opened it.
He rolled up his white shirtsleeves to his elbows and lifted the violin and bow.
He gently tuned the strings, knowing that it would be untuned from years without use.
Riker lifted the violin to his chin and held the bow. He imagined the song in his head, his favorite song to ever play on his violin, and began to run bow against strings.
A melody formed, as precise as if Riker had never laid down the violin.
Memories rose, both precious and hated. It was as if the violin brought everything he’d ever been through back to life…but with the beautiful notes of music intertwined.
The song came to an easy finish, and Riker gently laid down the violin back on the arm of the couch.
Jennie and Angelina wiped tears from their eyes, and Riker was a little surprised to see that Eleanor did the same.
No one else did, however.
Jennie slowly stood. “That was beautiful, darling,” she wrapped Riker in a quick hug; she pulled away, “now, how about I get some dessert for everyone, since it wasn’t completely finished at supper time? Let me go get that dessert for everyone.”
She took a few steps. A gasp escaped her lips and she collapsed to the floor.
Angelina screamed their mother’s name, and Riker instantly ran to his mother’s side, crouching down beside her. “Mama, Mama, listen to me, please!” Riker screamed, gently turning his mother over.
Jennie’s eyes fluttered open, but she merely stared up at him, unmoving.
“Mama, Mama, what’s wrong!?” Angelina cried, tears coursing down her cheeks in droves.
Jennie smiled gently, but only one side of the smile rose.
Riker jumped to his feet.
He had to find a doctor, and fast.
“I’ll go find a doctor. Just…stay with her, Ang…everyone, please.”
And before anyone could say anything, Riker rushed out the front door, slammed the door behind him, and ran as if his life depended on it.
Because maybe his mother’s life did.

Fork the GorkJuly 11, 2023 at 4:07 pm #150465@freedomwriter76
Hurrah! I get to bombard someone with random name lists! =D
Here are a few, and you don’t have to pick any I throw at you. Is there a particular letter or sound that you’re looking for?
Ekaterina: perfect
Kostya: loyal
Alya: scarlet, beautiful. Also a diminutive of other names beginning with Ал.
Yelena: possibly meaning torch or bright light
Anfisa: flower
Arina: Russian form of Irina, meaning peace
Elena: russian form of Helen, (see Yelena)
Elmira: communist era name meaning ‘electrification of the world’.
Faina: possibly meaning ‘shining’
Galya: calm
Inessa: chaste or lamb
Inna: unknown meaning
Kristina: russian form of Christina
Ksenia: hospitality (as a derivative of foreigner)
Lilya/Liliya: lily flower
Mariya: russian form of Mary
Masha: diminutive of Mariya
Nelli: Russian form of Nellie
Ninel: communist era name. Reversal of the surname Lenin
Noyabrina: communist era name meaning November
Oksana: (see Ksenia)
Rada: happy
Roza: often meaning rose
Sanya: diminutive of Aleksandra
Shura: (see Sanya)
Svetlana: light or world
Taisiya: referring to saint Thaïs.
And just a note: if she’s Russian, she would have a patronymic and a surname. She may not go by the patronymic in Germany as she would in Russia (In formal or simply outside of the home situations she would be called by her name and patronymic, sometimes with the surname), especially married to a German, but she would have one. If you haven’t already I recommend looking into them. They can be very interesting.
Communist era names are also quite interesting to look into. They often seem rather…strange. For instance Izaida: an acronym for ‘Idi za Il’ichem, detka’ – Follow Il’ich, dear. Very patriotic but weird. For this and other reasons most communist era names are no longer in use, but they are an interesting part of that time period.
