May 10, 2023 at 2:52 pm #142844@joy-calle Uh oh, I might get emotionally attached to Russell too now…..
If he’s a lot like Riker, then that’ll settle it, lol.
And that’s funny how their names start with the same letter.

Why don’t we give every character some brownies?? I know a couple more who’d love that.

Anywhoooo…here it is!!!!!!
Chapter 1
Germany
April 1917
The train rumbled beneath him. He’d tried to sleep for a few hours, failing every time. He merely ached for sleep that stubbornly refused to come.
He leaned back against the wall of the train.
At least they were finally free from the trenches of warfare, the trenches of the front lines.
He nudged his older brother, earning him a slight shove.
He chuckled. “Felix,” he pushed up on his brother’s helmet, “are you under there?”
His older brother smacked his hand away playfully. “Nobody’s home, Hans.”
“Obviously.”
Felix leaned back in his chair. He removed his helmet, and gently set it down on the floor. “Are you glad to be returning home?”
Hans bit his lip.
Truthfully, was he really happy to be going home?
Yes, he was glad to be out of the trenches. But then again, the men in the trenches…they were his fellow soldiers, his comrades, his brothers.
And returning home…that meant going home to the family that had never felt like family.
He shrugged. “I guess.”
His brother’s hand rested on his shoulder, greenish-blue eyes full of concern, love. “Hans, you can come stay with me.”
“I can’t intrude on you and Adinah, I mean, you two even have a baby-“
“Hans, listen to me,” Felix gently grabbed his chin, “you are never an intrusion. You’re my younger brother, and my house is always open to you.”
He nodded.
“Thanks Felix.”
Felix shrugged. “Not that big of a deal. It’s just what brothers do.”
Hans raised a half-smirk. “So…you gonna tell Adinah about the horse, or should I? I’m sure she’d just love to hear about it.”
“Hans!” Felix cried, playfully slapping Hans’ side.
Hans chuckled.
Yes, brothers would always be brothers.
~*~
They stepped off the train and onto the platform, side by side, their knapsacks on their backs, helmets attached to their uniforms, matching blonde hair smoothed down.
Felix shielded his eyes from the harsh sun.
It was good to have a break from the trenches, but he doubted the break would last long.
The Americans had just entered the war, and, thus, more fights were coming.
He hadn’t ever asked for any of this.
“Felix! Hans!”
He turned to see his wife, his Adinah, waving a hand in the air, tan skin and dark hair beautiful against the bright sun, brown eyes sparkling.
Felix jumped off the platform; he ran to her, his brother right behind him.
He scooped her into his arms, lifting her off the ground. He hadn’t held her in so long. Too long. He covered her with kisses. “Oh, Adinah…my Adinah…”
She kissed him back, her kisses full of comfort, love, admiration, passion, gentleness. “Oh Felix…oh darling, I’ve missed you so much.”
“Adinah…I love you so much.”
Adinah slowly shook her head, smiling softly, tears coursing down her cheeks. “Please, don’t make me cry. I’ve cried enough.”
Felix obeyed and merely kissed her again.
He put her back down on the ground, turning his attention to the small bundle in his wife’s arms.
He hadn’t seen him since his birth.
Felix gently took the bundle into his arms, just as Adinah gave Hans a small hug.
He held it carefully, tenderly, afraid to possibly break the baby, his son, wrapped inside the bundle.
Five months old.
Newborn when Felix had last seen him.
He’d grown up so fast.
A few tears brimmed his eyes.
His son’s dark brown eyes fluttered open, full of curiosity.
Felix gave his son his free hand, and his son wrapped his fingers around one of Felix’s own.
He reached down and gently kissed his son’s forehead. “Leo…my little Leo.”
Adinah’s arms wrapped around him, fitting herself into Felix’s side, her petite build fitting perfectly into Felix’s tall frame. “He looks at your picture every day. He already loves his Daddy, even though he doesn’t know you completely yet.”
Felix turned and gently kissed his wife’s forehead.
He hoped against reality that he would never have to leave again.
Chapter 2
They walked up the path leading to the mansion on the hill.
“Felix! Hans!”
Hans ran forward towards his six-year-old little brother, scooping him up into his arms, holding him up above him. “Himmler! Himmler, I’ve missed you so much!”
Himmler giggled, and when Hans lowered him, he wrapped his arms around Hans’ neck. “I’ve missed you too, Hans! Look, look, I lost a tooth!” He pointed.
Hans gasped. “You did! Wow, Himmler, you’re getting big so fast.”
“You’ve been gone forever! I missed you.”
Hans hugged his little brother tighter. “I missed you too, so much. Hey, while I’m here…maybe we can play some games.”
Himmler pulled away from Hans’ neck, their blue eyes meeting. “Yeah! I wanna play games!”
“Shh,” he winked, “we’ll play games later. At least say hi to Felix.”
Himmler waved. “Hi, Felix!”
Felix smiled and gave a wave back, stepping forward to give Himmler a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek, though Hans still held their baby brother. “Hi Himmler.”
Himmler smiled.
Hans lifted him up higher and placed him on his shoulders.
Himmler laughed, giggled. “Forward, forward!”
Hans did so, quickly reaching the front, large door of the mansion, Felix and Adinah, who held Leo, right behind the two of them.
He turned around. “Come on, slowpokes, what’s taking you so long!?”
“Yeah!” Himmler cried, then fell over himself with giggles.
“Woah, careful.” Hans cautioned, righting his brother so he wouldn’t fall. He turned and winked at Felix. “You’re so distracted by your wife that you can’t even get up here fast enough.”
Felix gave him a faint glare. Felix turned to glance at Adinah; Adinah smiled, laughed, and gave Felix a nod. “Get him, honey.”
Felix rushed forward, and before Hans could even move, Felix grabbed him around the waist.
Hans laughed. “Ack, Felix, hey!!!”
But he couldn’t help but laugh.
“You asked for this!” Felix replied, beginning to wrestle him, partially tickling him too, but not hurting him at all.
Hans laughed and pulled out of his grip…but Himmler fell off his shoulder.
Felix barely caught him, catching him by the ankle.
Hanging upside down, Himmler laughed. He clapped his hands. “Let’s do that again! Again!”
Hans, Felix, and Adinah all laughed.
But their laughter was interrupted by a rough, harsh, booming voice. “Get home and you instantly start acting like children!?”
~*~
Felix turned to face his gray-haired, scowling, obviously impatient and angry father.
Himmler giggled. “We just have fun, Daddy!”
But Heinrich was known to be a man that hated fun…he wanted strict discipline and perfection, not fun.
He crossed his arms. “Felix, put your brother back down.”
He silently obeyed, gently setting Himmler right-side up, gently, on the ground.
Heinrich nodded in approval. “Good.”
