TRIGGER WARNING: MENTIONS OF ABUSE
Joshua ran on the streets, Jakob beside him, quickly trailed by a small group of SS.
A perfect distraction, truly.
They were leading them away from the church and woods, and that was enough…truly, it was all they needed.
Jakob pulled him around a corner, and together, they laid down in a small ravine, laying as still as possible, their chests touching the dirt.
“Lord Jesus…help us.” Joshua whispered.
The men rushed past, yelling frantic, angry German.
Quickly making sure the coast was clear, Joshua grabbed Jakob’s hand and pulled his brother to his feet. “Come on, hurry.”
Together, they rushed to the church, careful to make sure no one followed them.
They entered the church through the secret entrance and went down into the basement full of people.
“Joshua, Jakob, you’re back!” Wolfgang cried with a bright smile, rushing over.
Jakob raised an eyebrow. “Did we rescue everyone?”
Wolfgang nodded enthusiastically. “We did! Everyone’s here and accounted for!”
“And we have fake identity cards to fill out.”
Wolfgang turned with a gasp and smile. “Uncle Himmler!”
Himmler smiled and set a large box on one of the nearby tables, pulling Wolfgang into a quick hug. “Glad to see you, Wolfgang.”
“Himmler,” Ezekiel smiled and waved, walking over, “will Hans and Felix hear about this soon?”
Himmler shook his head. “Not at all…my brothers may find out by morning at the earliest.”
Joshua raised an eyebrow. “How much did they drink?”
Himmler merely winked, opening up the box and motioning for Ezekiel to come over. “We should have enough…I can take all of them to the printer tomorrow. The box is labeled as ink, but of course, that’s not what is in here.”
Ezekiel smiled, giving Himmler a pat on the back. “Perfect. This is going smoothly. Everyone will have to get used to their new cards, their new names…and soon. The first group needs to leave tomorrow night at the latest…we can’t keep everyone in this building forever, and especially with tomorrow being Sunday…we’re risking a lot by having them here.”
Himmler slowly nodded. “Indeed. I’m glad everyone is here…Riker has done a wonderful job taking Fin’s place.”
Joshua smiled. “Isn’t that the truth.”
As if summoned, Riker walked over, a small boy clutching to Riker’s jacket with everything he had. “Fake identity cards are our only option…but I fear that many of the young children here that came without family will struggle with remembering their new, temporary names.”
Walking over, Leo nodded in agreement. “I was thinking the same thing.”
Children without family? Joshua’s eyebrows furrowed together. “How many children are here from the trucks that came without any family?”
Riker bit his lip. “At least a dozen…Iosif here is one of them.” Riker whispered, gently laying a hand on the curls of the small boy clinging to him.
“Unattended children?” Jakob’s fists clenched. “Where do you think they were being taken?”
“One of the camps…to be…be…” Riker trailed off, voice cracking.
But everyone understood what was left unsaid.
“Maybe some of the families here wouldn’t mind bringing extra children with them…it won’t hurt to ask.” Reuben whispered.
“But many of them wouldn’t risk taking in a deaf child. It would pose too much risk for them and their family.”
Joshua faced Riker. “…We’ll find a way, Riker.”
“I may know a family that would be willing to take Iosif,” Ezekiel smiled gently, “and any other children with beautiful differences, for that matter, into their home…but it may be some time before I can get ahold of them.”
Riker slowly nodded. “Just…please do what you can.” Riker crouched down in front of Iosif, signing something Joshua didn’t understand, pointing at Esther, who was helping give several of the rescued people, especially children, a bit of food to sustain them.
Iosif shook his head, and Riker signed something else, seemingly asking a question.
Iosif tried to sign something but instead cried, and Riker lifted him into his arms.
“Is he alright?” Wolfgang whispered softly, concern in his blue eyes.
Riker slowly nodded. “He just…he misses his family…a lot. Come on, we should get to work on these fake identity cards…”
Joshua nodded. “Of course…let’s help these people as much as we can.”
and here are the next 2 scenes:
It was past three in the morning.
Photos had been taken…fake names given. Now all they needed to do was wait for the printer and put plans together to send every single rescued individual to safety.
Jakob led the way back to their home, sticking to the shadows to make sure they weren’t caught, being out after curfew and all.
It was late, and thankfully, Himmler had gotten their father drunk…so no one would be at the house, or at least not awake.
Jakob crested the hill with his brothers, and carefully, slowly, he unlocked the front door of the mansion and eased it open. He stepped inside and signaled for his brothers to do the same.
The house was quiet…perfect.
They could quietly get upstairs, and no one would know that they had been missing.
“Well, well, you’re finally home.”
A lamp turned on.
Seated in the armchair in the living room that currently faced the door, Frida held a book in one hand, a cigarette in the other. She smiled sadistically. “You’re not supposed to be out past curfew.”
“Who says, you!?” Jakob wanted to yell…along with other things, but he didn’t. For his brothers, he didn’t speak.
“We were out visiting a friend, Mutti.” Wolfgang lied. “And…and we lost track of time.”
“Is that all? Losing track of time, oh, that can be forgiven…can’t it? Did you receive permission to see this friend of yours?”
Silence fell.
“Well!?”
“We…we did-” Reuben looked away, “we didn’t, Mutti.”
Frida clicked her tongue, putting out her cigarette and laying it in the ashtray beside her. “For shame, darlings…you know you’re not supposed to go anywhere before your father knows it is safe, and you certainly aren’t supposed to be out past curfew.”
Joshua finally spoke. “We lost track of-“
“I don’t care that you lost track of time! You are supposed to obey me and your father, do you understand me!? We deserve your-“
“You deserve NONE of our respect.” Jakob snarled.
Frida closed her book with a thud. Her coal eyes blazed. “Insolence will not be tolerated. You know the rules, and you choose to break them. Much as I’d enjoy handling this myself, I will leave your father to deal with all of you.”
Leo stepped forward. “Please, Mutti, it wasn’t them-“
Frida stood and stepped over to Leo. In heels, even she stood taller than Leo. She tilted his chin up, forcing their eyes to meet. “…Then maybe their punishments laying on your conscious will finally make you behave, my dear.”
She briskly turned and left the room.
Jakob’s fists clenched…and an anger strong enough to commit murder pulsed through his veins. He’d make her pay…one day, he’d make her pay.
~*~
Reuben tried to draw with his left hand, hand shaking, and cradled his younger brother with his other arm.
His fresh injuries, already beginning to bruise, protested at Wolfgang touching them, but Reuben wouldn’t push his brother away.
“Why do they have to be so mean!? We-we’re just trying to do the right thing, and Mutti and Father…they…they…they hurt us!” Wolfgang cried, tears coursing down his cheeks in droves.
Reuben wrapped his arm tighter around Wolfgang.
Wolfgang sniffed and looked up at Reuben, their matching blue eyes meeting. “…Can we…can we never be loved?”
Reuben released his pencil and wrapped his arms around his brother. “Oh, Wolfgang…”
Wolfgang sobbed into Reuben’s shirt.
Reuben held him closer, even though it hurt. He’d never let his brother go…not for anything or anyone.
As Frida had said, she’d left Felix to “deal with them”…and “deal with them” he had…especially Leo.
Reuben glanced at his oldest brother who sat on one of the beds, Joshua tending to the wounds their father had inflicted. Leo winced as Joshua pressed a cloth against his chest. “Shh, I’m almost done…hold still.” Joshua whispered, softly chided, even.
Wolfgang’s sobs finally stilled, and Reuben turned his attention back to his younger brother. “Are you okay now, Wolfie?”
Wolfgang sniffed, wiped his nose, and nodded. “Yeah…what…what were you drawing?”
How could he explain to Wolfgang that he was drawing the image of someone whose arms he’d once laid in, someone whose lullabies he’d once heard, someone he couldn’t remember but felt as if she was…his?
Reuben flipped over his sketchbook, hiding the drawing of a woman holding a small child…whose face was left blank. “Nothing…just doodling a little bit. Do you want to draw something for a little while?”
Wolfgang nodded, so Reuben flipped to a new page, handing Wolfgang his pencil.
Leaning back against one of the posts of the bunk beds, Jakob crossed his arms. “They’ll pay for all of this one day…I’ll make sure they do.”
Reuben glanced at Joshua, but to his own surprise, Joshua remained silent, still caring for Leo’s wounds.
“We can leave, for crying out loud! They don’t have the justification to hurt us anymore, we’re all adults, for Pete’s sake,” Jakob began pacing the floor, “we can leave!”
“And go where, Jakob?” Joshua faced Jakob, raising an eyebrow. “Where would we go, a Ghetto where we’ll later be forced into one of the camps? What good are we to anyone by then?”
“We can’t just stay here!”
Joshua sighed. “I know, Jakob…I know…but we have nowhere else to go, you know that…and we can’t ask Ezekiel for help…he’s already been through enough.”
Jakob groaned, sinking to the floor. “Right…but what about…” Jakob leapt to his feet again, “what about Frau Adelmann!? She has to know somebody…our life used to be better, and she and our…our…Mother were friends since childhood, so maybe they still are! Maybe we can find-“
Leo shook his head. “No, Jakob…no…you know that won’t-“
“Leo, you have to have a little bit of hope! Maybe Frau Adelmann can contact her…maybe she can come, and-“
“Jakob…”
“Leo, she has to be alive…maybe she could come back, and we could find somewhere to live with-“
“She’s not coming back! She’s never coming back, alright!?” Leo yelled, eyes full of tears. Leo angrily swiped the tears away. “…She’s not coming back, Jakob…she’s not.”
“Leo-“
“She’s not coming back!”
The bedroom door slammed open, and Reuben jumped.
“What is with the yelling!?”
Joshua faced their father with a small smile. “It’s nothing, Father…just a small argument.”
Felix’s eyes narrowed, and Reuben felt Wolfgang inch closer to him. Reuben wrapped his arms around his brother, holding him close, keeping him safe the best way he knew how.
Felix glanced around the room and scowled. “You’re still not ready? I don’t want to hear anymore ruckus; I’m not afraid to punish you accordingly. All of you finish getting ready…we leave for church in fifteen minutes.”
Felix slammed the door closed behind him, and only then could Reuben breathe evenly.
Leo stood, buttoning on a plain, white button-up shirt, quickly tucking it into his slacks and grabbing his coat, looking at himself in the mirror.
Jakob stepped up behind him. “Leo…there may still be hope…”
Leo turned on his heel and faced Jakob, a few tears still brightening his eyes. “She’s not coming back, Jakob…she can’t and she won’t. It’s up to us…our Mother won’t rescue us, and God certainly won’t.”
Reuben held Wolfgang close. There had to still be hope…there had to be.
Reuben tightly closed his eyes…and he could…he could almost see his Mother’s face…her beautiful face full of…love.

I have yet another scene that continues from the others, lol…time for Wolfgang’s POV!!!!
Wolfgang fidgeted in his seat, drumming his fingers on his knees, unable to sit still in the wooden pew for too long of a time.
When would the Pastor be done preaching? What he was teaching…it didn’t even sound like what Joshua said all the time! So…who was right?
Wolfgang trusted his brother more…so Joshua had to be right!
His body ached, and Wolfgang just wanted to go home and sleep…he didn’t know why Mutti and Father had to be so mean.
He just wanted to sleep…he was so tired.
Wolfgang’s legs bounced, but he didn’t mind. He had to move somehow…he couldn’t sit still forever!
“Could you stop moving!?” Annalise hissed.
Wolfgang glanced at his sister. “Why? Can’t I move…?”
“Annalise, Wolfgang, shush.” Frida hissed, leaning slightly forward to glare at them both.
Wolfgang lapsed into silence, still drumming his fingers and bouncing his knees.
“Wolfgang, stop it…you’re shaking me.” Annalise snarled.
Steffi stuck her tongue out at Wolfgang, just a quick flick of her tongue so no one else would see. “Yeah, stop being such a jerk to Annalise.”
“I-I’m not-“
“Steffi, Annalise, leave him alone….he’s being quiet, and that’s all that matters. You don’t have to be brats.” Dietrich muttered, seated on the other side of Annalise and Steffi, sitting towards the end of the pew along with Adolphus.
Annalise faced him with a glare. “Stay out of this, Dietrich. Stay in your own business.”
Adolphus’ blue eyes narrowed. “You heard him, quit it.”
Steffi rolled her eyes. “And Annalise told him to stay out of it.”
“Hey…he’s just trying to be nice.” Wolfgang whispered.
He appreciated Dietrich and Adolphus’ help. It was nice of them.
“Adolphus, Dietrich, Wolfgang, shut it.” Felix snarled, glaring at all three of them.
Wolfgang huffed.
How come Annalise and Steffi didn’t get in trouble!?“Just ignore them, Wolfgang.” Reuben whispered in his ear, seated right beside him. “It’s no use arguing with them, you’ll just get in trouble.”
Wolfgang nodded.
Yeah…he’d ignore them…they were annoying, anyways.
Wolfgang went back to listening and fidgeting, hoping for something fun to do soon.
His body hurt…he was so sleepy…he could sleep in church.
Annalise suddenly shrieked, and Wolfgang jumped, instantly facing his sister.
Several others screamed and stood up in the pews, and Wolfgang saw why Annalise had screamed.
He smiled brightly. “Look, a frog!”
There were frogs everywhere! Wolfgang laughed.
Now this was something fun!
There were people running around everywhere…scared of little frogs!
Wolfgang reached for one, picking it up. It felt so…strange, but it looked so…amazing!
Once all of the frogs were caught, the church service quickly ended, and everyone filed outside.
That had been the most fun service in…forever!
“What was all of that about!? We’ve never had that happen before!” Frida grumbled to Felix, walking over to where Wolfgang and all of his siblings, even Adolphus, Dietrich, Annalise, and Steffi, were waiting.
“That was the most…interesting church service I’ve ever seen.” Dietrich mused.
Felix rolled his eyes. “I want to know who’s responsible. Though I have a few guesses…five of them, to be precise.”
His gaze roved over Wolfgang and his brothers, and Wolfgang gulped.
He…he didn’t want to be in trouble again…he-he didn’t want to get beaten again…please, no.“I brought the frogs, Father, Mutti.”
Felix instantly faced Dietrich, and his eyes narrowed. “Excuse me!?”
“I thought I’d pull a prank like I did on occasion when I was younger…I meant no harm to anyone, I promise.”
Frida’s eyes blazed with fury. “It doesn’t matter! You’ve made us look like fools!”
“How could you, Dietrich!?” Annalise cried, fury almost as strong as her mother’s in her eyes.
Steffi placed her hands on her hips and glared. “Yeah!”
Uh oh…now Dietrich was in trouble.
Frida huffed and faced Felix. “You mustn’t let such ill behavior continue, my dear.”
Felix nodded, holding a lit cigarette in one hand. “Of course, but I have other things to attend to this afternoon…meetings and such. Besides, he’s more your son than he is mine…deal with him however you see fit. Adolphus, come with me…you have to be present for these meetings.”
Adolphus glanced at Dietrich, eyes full of concern…fear, but he followed Felix.
Frida smiled at Dietrich. “Come, darling…we must get home. All of my dears, follow me…we’re heading home this instant.”
