oh, and I researched the tattoo thing……
and yeah, that would probably cause a lot of trouble. Those who had it or even those who removed it by hurting themselves there were often executed…..
Although one of the few guys who actually escaped was a man who really deserved execution, so…..There’s a bit of hope for your character (who most definitely doesn’t)
Where'd I get ya this time? The liver? The kidney? I'm runnin' outta places to put holes in ya.

Children of the Storm is the autobiography of Natasha Vins, who’s father was actually arrested do to his involvement in the underground church. I haven’t managed to read all of it (I also got The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic at the same time…so I don’t really blame myself for getting distracted XD), but I’d still recommend it.
They spoke in quiet Russian by the door.
I just love this description for some reason. XD
And I have to say, that was about the nicest interrogation scene I think I’ve ever read. I think I like this Peter Kuznetsov.

The door closed behind Leon and Ivanov.
Riker faced Peter again. “…What do we still need to talk about?”
Peter opened his notebook again and put the pen behind his ear. “I believe you know.”
Riker slowly nodded. “You want to question me about my work in the SS.”
“Well, yes…sort of. Leon said that you didn’t know about the existence of the camps when he begged you for help. Is that true?”
“Yes, it is…I didn’t know about them for a long time, but I should have.”
Still a regret he held.
“Did you enjoy your work within the SS?”
“Not one bit.”
Peter raised an eyebrow. “Then why did you join?”
“…I had to enter the military in some capacity, else I’d be drafted and forced to do so anyhow. I enlisted in the SS so I wouldn’t have to go to the front lines.”
“People probably called you a coward.”
Riker shrugged. “Maybe I was…but I didn’t want to go to the front lines because I didn’t want to kill anyone…and then I realized I was a murderer all along.”
He saw Peter swallow, hard, and turn to look another way.
“Peter?”
Peter faced Riker again, blue eyes slightly widened. He cleared his throat, wrote something down in the notebook, and faced Riker again. “Is that all?”
“What more do you want to know?”
“I…I don’t truly know. Most of the men that were formerly in the SS don’t usually get this far…usually executed.”
Death.
Riker knew that death wasn’t the end.
“And why haven’t you done that to me?”
Peter stood and went to the single, barred window in the room, glancing outside. He rubbed his hands together and lapsed into silence.
“Peter…do you want this job?”
Peter’s eyes brimmed with tears. He slowly shook his head. “No.”
“Did you choose it at one time?”
Peter wiped his eyes and turned around to face Riker. “I thought I was the one interrogating.”
“Then please continue.”
Peter let out a deep breath. “I chose this job a few years ago…I worked hard to get this position…”
“You seem so unsure.”
Peter turned away again, hiding tears that formed in his eyes. He scoffed. “What would you know?”
“I’ve seen great darkness…even in myself.”
Silence settled.
“Someone died, didn’t they?”
Peter slowly turned around, and his blue eyes were full of tears. “…My niece.”
“At this prison?”
“Yes,” Peter replied, his voice cracking, “and I watched it happen…she was only fourteen, captured for spreading pamphlets from the underground church…and she was killed. My own niece was killed in the prison I run…and I let it happen.”
Everything was in his eyes…everything Riker understood all too well.
Regret.
Shame.
Guilt.
“And I’ve tried to be kinder…tried to make this prison nicer…tried to stop all the killing…but…but…it’s not…it’s not enough…”
“Peter,” Riker slowly stood, “don’t you know that neither God’s love nor his grace can ever be earned? Nothing you do can ever atone for what you’ve done…because Jesus already paid your debt. He already atoned for your sin. God wants you just as you are, and Jesus wants to free you. And as the Bible says, ‘who the son sets free,’”, Riker paused, “…is free indeed.’”
Freedom.
Freedom from the past.
Freedom from the shame.
Freedom from the guilt.
“How could he ever forgive a man like me…?”
Riker smiled. “God isn’t like us, Peter…he forgives freely, because he loves you so much…the Bible says we have redemption through Christ’s blood…and forgiveness of our trespasses. God’s forgiveness…is complete.”
The loss of their baby…it wasn’t punishment…because God’s forgiveness was already complete.
God’s forgiveness was already extended…Riker’s punishment had already been given to Christ…Jesus had already taken what he deserved.
A wave of reassurance settled, and with it, a whisper; ‘Child, it’s time for you to forgive yourself.’
Tears in his eyes, Riker faced Peter again and took in a deep breath: a new breath.
A breath of new life.
“…And it’s time for you to forgive yourself.”
A sob escaped Peter’s throat, and he suddenly collapsed to the floor on his knees, sobbing. “…Forgive me…please…” Peter glanced up, and gently, he grabbed Riker’s wrists. “Please…can you help me pray? I-I don’t know how…and I-I…I want him.”
Riker got onto one knee in front of Peter. “Of course.” He squeezed Peter’s shoulder with one hand and clutched Peter’s hand with his other. “I’ll lead you in a prayer of repentance and belief…just follow me.”
Riker prayed, and Peter followed him.
He led Peter through prayer, and as Peter devoted his life to Christ, Riker devoted his to God once more, finally making the choice to do what God had already done…forgiven him.
Redemption.
Beautiful redemption.

Even seen the “1 bit! 2 bits! 4 bits! 8 bits. 16 bits. 32 bits.” videos? Like the ones where the number of bits doubles, and the image either becomes less pixelly or just plain weirder? My brother and I watched some of those, and now he sometimes just randomly yells out “1 bit!” and we keep doing it….
Or, one time, I was standing next to my doorway, like halfway hidden, and I saw my mom put down toast and butter for lunch, but there was no knife. I said “I need a knife.” but I was still hiding next to the doorway like I was stalking somebody, so my family thought that was hilarious (and maybe a little creepy). Now “I need a knife” has become a household joke…..
HAHA, that is amazing. 😂😂

I love that scene! it seems like Riker has come a long way since the other scenes that I’ve read, and I love how he’s at the point in his arc where he can help others realize the same thing.

and yes, Min, Riker has come a very long way 🥰
and Koshka, I think it would be too early for that, since it’s only the 1950s…but I honestly need to do more research into the Soviet era 😛XXD
