Started working on Kaine and Everly’s backstory! It’s more of an unfinished outline. I think her backstory might be shown as she’s explaining her life to Layson, idk, so in that case it would be written a lot different. Or, it’l just be in her thoughts and the memory will be triggered by holding Maylee and remembering when Kaine was little 🥰
And I think it’ll be split into multiple bits, this is just the first part.
And for context everly’s mom basically just dropped her off to live by herself 😬 she comes by to give her supplies, but doesn’t want to raise her. Jonathan takes care of a few orphans already, he comes by maybe once a week to check on her and hang out/talk, and give her anything her mom isn’t providing. he’s also the one who taught her how to shoot a bow.
Jonathan approaches the door to the small overgrown cottage. He knocks on the window next to the door, it’s hinges sitting crooked and rusted against the grey siding. A small crying noise escapes from the broken window. He raises an eyebrow. 11-year-old Everly opens the door and steps out onto the porch.
“Hello Ms. Everly!” He pauses at the appearance of her tear-streaked face. “What’s wrong?”
Everly starts crying, wrapping her arms around Jonathan tightly.
“My mom came by-“ She sniffs. “And she left me her baby—”
“She what? Left you her baby?” Jonathon’s eyes open wide in surprise.
“A-and he won’t stop crying and I don’t know what to do—” She sniffs again, wiping at her eyes with her forearm.
“O-ok, let’s go take care of that and we’ll talk about what happened, where is he?”
“On the couch.” Everly wipes at her eyes again.
Jonathan walks into the cottage, shutting the door behind him. A small candle burns on the dining room table, subtly lighting the room. A small baby sits on the couch, barely holding himself upright. He cries, reaching his arms out.
“Hello!” Jonathan picks him up in his arms. “Does he have a name?”
Everly looks up from the floor. “She left me a little book over there she said had that stuff in it.”
“Ok we’ll have to take a look at that.” He shifts the baby to his other arm.
Everly walks over to the small crate her mom left. She rummages through the food and baby supplies that were left inside. Opening the small red notebook, she reads along the first page.
“it’s Kaine.” She pauses, flipping through the pages. “He’s one year old.”
Jonathan sighs. “So, you got yourself a 1-year-old little brother.”
“I guess.”
“Did your mom say anything else?”
“N-no… she just told me to take good care of him because she’d be back.”
“Well, that wasn’t very nice was it.”
“No.” Everly looks down at the floor, tears welling in her eyes. She sits down next to Jonathan, who puts his arm around her.
Kaine looks up at Jonathan with big eyes, noticing the conversation. “Ma?”
Everly gasps slightly, then looks over at Jonathan.
“I’m not your ma. Sorry.”
Kaine looks between Jonathan and Everly, then settles back into his arms.
Jonathan sighs.
“What’re we going to do?” Everly asks, fear tracing her voice.
“How about this. I can’t take him for you, because he belongs to your mom, not you, but I can stay here a night or two until you get the hang of it.”
Tears course down Everly’s cheeks. “I-I didn’t want a baby though.”
“I know honey I’m sorry… It’s not the way it’s supposed to work.” He looks over at Everly, who wipes her eyes against her sleeve.
“I know this seems really over whelming, we’ll figure it out together ok?”
She nods.
“And y’know what?”
“…What?”
“If this all goes well… he might just grow up to be your best friend.” Jonathan smiles.
Everly’s eyes grow wide.
My best friend?
“Here, you want to try holding him?”
Everly turns, her eyes focused on Kaine.
“…Sure.”
Jonathan picks Kaine up and sets him on Everly’s lap. He looks up at her with big eyes. She leans back apprehensively. Kaine looks back at Jonathan again before letting out a small cry. Everly watches his face fill with tears.
“Try putting your arms around him, he might stop.”
Everly slowly reaches forwards, wrapping her arms around his small body. She pulls him closer, and his crying subsides. He looks up at her with big blue eyes.
“Not too bad huh?”
Everly nods, still looking at Kaine. He looks down, resting his head against her and closing his eyes.
“I’ll be back in a bit to check on you, ok?” Jonathan gets up off the couch and picks up his satchel.
“I don’t know what to do.”
Jonathan frowns.
“Well your mom left baby formula in the crate…” He rummages one hand through the supplies left. “So I’ll be back in about an hour and we’ll make that for him.”
Everly nods, closing her eyes on fresh tears.
“Just make sure he doesn’t fall off of anything while I’m gone, ok?”
“Yeah.” Everly opens her eyes again, and a tear rolls down her cheek.
Jonathan sighs. “This isn’t the way it’s supposed to be. Children aren’t supposed to have to raise children.”
She nods. “I just—don’t want to mess up—and—I never asked for this…” Tears course down her cheeks again. “But I don’t wanna make mamma upset.”
“We can only do what we can do.” Jonathan sits on the couch again, wrapping his arms around the two of them in an embrace. “We need to remember that Kaine didn’t ask for this life either though.”
“Yeah.” Everly wipes her eyes.
“Ok, see you two soon.” He gets up and walks towards the door, offering her a final smile before closing it behind him.
Everly remains seated, her arms loosely around her brother.
“Gah? Gablah—ma?”
“What?” Everly stares blankly into Kaine’s big blue eyes. He settles into her arms again.
Maybe mamma will come back for him sometime.
Everly looks down, feeling a small amount of immediate guilt at the thought. Kaine smiles, nestling further into her arms.
“We need to remember that Kaine didn’t choose this life either.”
Everly frowns.
Imagine your mom not wanting you.
I know how that feels.
“Can you talk?” Everly says apprehensively, looking down at him.
“Ma?” Kaine giggles.
Tears fill Everly’s eyes.
“Yeah, I know.” She chokes over her words. “I wish Ma would come back too.”
Everly looks down again, noticing Kaine’s eyes already shut. She turns him slightly, cradling him in her arms. The weight of his small body feels a near comfort in the dark room. The candle on the mantel burns slowly, flickering yellow light around the room as the sun sets. Everly shivers, the lonely coldness of her mother leaving still stewing from earlier in the morning. Kaine opens his eyes slightly, looking up at her with curiosity.
He’s just so… innocent.
Everly lifts his small head slightly with her hand, taking care to be gentle.
You’re not going to go through this like I have.
I’m going to show you that I love you, even if mom doesn’t.
She leans forwards, kissing his forehead.

Awesome! Nah, I haven’t really messed with many different kinds of perms lately, just standard 2 look and mu moves. I haven’t really attended any events, but a friend of mine in Oregon does, he averages around 10 seconds. I have a pretty big collection, got a tetrahedron, 2 Gan 3x3s, lots of other 3x3s, then a 2×2, a 4×4, a 5×5, a skweb, a couple morph cubes, and a dodecahedron. I can solve all of them, but I only work on speed solving 3×3.
Woah that’s cool! Yeah I’ve never explored outside of 3 by 3 and 2 by 2. I kinda wanted to do sq-1 at some point have you tried it? It just looked like a lot of steps (the whole cube-shape thing) so I never got one.

#ProtectSebYeah! One time I went through a solve of a Square-1 with some help. It was last year when I attended 5 weeks at MathCamp for the summer, and a bunch of other campers had cubes, so we made a club. One Had a couple Sqr-1’s and gave us all a lesson, it was really cool! It really messes with your intuition where there’s a turn that you want to do, but then it’s not even a possible move!? I would love to get my hands on one again though, apparently all solve methods are 90% algs for it though, so you have to take a little more time with it.
He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.
That sounds like a really fun camp! And yeah, getting the layer aligned to make certain moves seems confusing 🤔

Thanks asking, idk… I’m not bad at math, but tbh I just get it done as fast as possible even though I’ll forget it later… because at the end of the day I just want enough free time to wright and draw a lot 🤣
My online school is not that hard, so as long as I take thorough notes I can forget how to solve it the next day and yeah it’s not a problem. I have three attempts at the unit test, the biggest point getter. So yeah, I’m sure that makes a math fan like you very very sad, but it’s just how I do it 🤣😭 I don’t enjoy math (I actually used to like it in in person school. It was really fun back then and the math group I was placed in was a blast. Can I go back lol?)
