*clears throat* *rooms settles into quiet* It has come to my attention, thanks to R. M. Archer, that Saturday, November 7th is National Indie Author Day. Now, I understand that (1) not all of you live here in the USA and (2) most of us are not published authors–but neither of those can exempt you from the celebration and appreciation of independent and self-published authors, both on this forum, in America, and worldwide. I also understand that there is still a week until Nov. 7th, but I have a very good reason for posting this ahead of time.
I have two challenges for all of us in the week leading up to Indie Author Day. The first one is for all of the indie/self-pubbed authors here on this forum. And even if you’re traditionally-pubbed, we are still super thankful for you and happy that you’ve gotten your work out there. I want y’all to stick around, please. Now, I’ve only tagged as many people as I could think of right off the top of my head, so please tag other members–whether they’re published or not. Also, if I’ve tagged you and you do not wish to participate, feel free to ignore this long post and, if you would, tag someone you think would be interested.
Anyway, AUTHORS! We are celebrating you this week, so I want you all to gather around. Here is where y’all can brag (within reason, of course) about your books and accomplishments. Gush about your books. Share how we can purchase them. Ask for reviews from those who have already read them. Share the synopsis, your favorite parts and/or characters, whatever.
I’ll be doing the same at the end of this post, so don’t feel ashamed. There aren’t many of us here (I don’t think), so let this be your time to shine!
Now, READERS! Don’t run away! I know you’ve all been working super hard on your own projects, with hopes of indie/self or traditional publication in the future–and that hasn’t happened yet, but hold out! It will come, and in the meantime, I challenge you–I challenge ALL OF US to support each other and other indie authors. We authors will be sharing about our books, so go out and buy one! Leave a review where you can, and tell your friends and family. And if you’ve recently (or in the past) read a really good indie book, tell us about it! I read Shadow Road by A. E. Pennymaker last month, and it was FANTASTIC, especially for an indie book. So I recommend that one to support an indie author! Share what you’ve read by indie authors, then go out and read another indie book this week! And when you’re done, come back and let us know what you thought. We would all especially appreciate it if you took the time to support us authors on KP, but if none of our books intrigue you, that’s fine! You can support us in other ways, like by social media posts, signing up for newsletters or following us on social media (like Goodreads or Instagram), and telling friends that would like our books about us!
Now, a personal message to the indie authors of KP: I’m kicking off a special series on Nov. 7th of indie author interviews–and I want Y’ALL to be the focus. If any of you indie authors would like to be featured on my blog, please raise your hand here or shoot me an email at graceajohnson.author@gmail.com! We’ll work out the details then. And if more than one of you want an interview, I’ll be sure to get y’all in the coming months!
I said I would gush about my books, and I will, but I’ll try to keep it short! I’ve written two full-length novels, three short stories, and one novella. They’re all available as Kindle eBooks–and the novels are available in paperback–on Amazon. I would share the link, but they never work, so search for “prisoner at heart,” and you’ll find me!
My novels are books 1 and 2 in a series of six, all historical Christian romances set during the Golden Age of Piracy and focusing on a female pirate captain and her journey to redemption. One short story is a post-WW2-era Christmas homecoming story; another short story is a Christmas story for my Daughters of the Seven Seas series; and the newest is a fantasy story. My novella is a companion story for Held Captive and Prisoner at Heart, my novels.
You can find me on Goodreads under Grace A. Johnson and at my blog and website.
Quick recap: November 7th is Indie Author Day, and I challenge the authors here to share about their books and the soon-to-be-published writers to support us by reading and reviewing our books! If you’re an author and would like to be interviewed, email me at the address above or let me know here.
Also, let’s all give @e-k-seaver a big round of applause! Her dystopian novel, The Reflections, has been picked up by an agent, and at any given moment, a publisher could accept it! She will soon be entering the realms of published authors, so three cheers for her!
I do hope you will all take the time this week to support indie authors all across the world, and I ask that y’all please tag more members for me! Thank you for reading this far along, guys! And Happy Early Indie Author Day!
October 31, 2020 at 2:46 pm #86788@gracie-j, first off, that sounds amazing. I’d love to support indie authors, and I’m totally into cheering y’all on!
Secondly— just to clarify, I haven’t been picked up by an agent yet, but my full manuscript has been requested. 😂 They just haven’t offered me representation. Of course, if you can see into the future, and said agent is going to offer rep, please tell me because that will be very exciting. 🤣
The pen is mightier than the sword, but in a duel, I'm taking the sword.

@e-k-seaver Thank you!
Oops… 🙄😳 Well, that’s still exciting and still a great accomplishment! And, you know, I do have some prophesy in me, so… You never know. 😋 I definitely think that it won’t be long!
October 31, 2020 at 3:10 pm #86800@gracie-j I’m not sure if I count because I only publish web fiction, haha. I really like this idea.
But in the case that web fiction does count…I’ve posted a short story and a novella on Webnovel so far, and am hoping to work on much longer works some time. You can read basically anything I write for free here…. https://www.webnovel.com/profile/4305621095?appId=10
Ahem. But I think that self-publishing is a much bigger achievement than just web fiction! So congrats to all you indie authors! You have all my support!
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know

@devastate-lasting Thank you!
Awesome! I will definitely count that, since (1) they’re technically published and (2) you did it yourself!
October 31, 2020 at 3:17 pm #86818@gracie-j I am in awe of your short-term planning skills. XD
An interview sounds like a lot of fun! ^-^
I currently have three published works: Lost Girl (short story/novella), The Mirror-Hunter Chronicles (short story series or novella, depending on how you want to look at it), and Short Story Collection vol. 1 (self-explanatory XD).
Lost Girl is a fluff Peter Pan continuation. It’s very fluff, but I think it’s kinda cute and fun. XD
I always describe The Mirror-Hunter Chronicles as A Series of Unfortunate Events meets Disney. It’s fairytale retellings with a hint of original Grimms darkness, but also a whimsical fairytale feel… and with a snarky narrator.
Short Story Collection vol. 1 includes a contemporary story, a fantasy story (which I’ll get to in a minute), and two sci-fi stories. The sci-fi stories are connected to a world that I have a ton of ideas for and… no books in yet, lol. They sort of set the groundwork for some stuff that happens later on. The contemporary is one I just wrote for fun and really liked. And the fantasy story… the fantasy story takes place in my favorite fantasy world ever (of mine) and explores some of the cultures therein. It’s probably my favorite, because worldddddd. XD
I also have a writing blog/author website (which I really need to write a post for today… It’s supposed to be monthly update day and my motivation is kaput. XP)
It’s been almost two months since I read an indie book (D:), but I recently received a paperback copy of Steward Stories by Beth Wangler and it’s fantasticccccc (I’d already read it on ebook). It’s a series of short stories bridging the first and second books of her Steward Saga, and the stories all have a strong focus on family in various ways and explore the world in which the series takes place and they’re so cool. I highly recommend.
(KP doesn’t like me posting links, so I’ll have to post a few more times to get all the links. :P)

@r-m-archer Thank you so much for sharing! I actually really wanted to read one (or all) of your works, so I’ll definitely get to that this week. And if you’d like an interview, you can email me or I can contact you through your website–whichever you’d prefer.
Again, thank you! 🙂
October 31, 2020 at 4:42 pm #86845@gracie-j I’ll have to keep a look out for reviews. ;D (I’m one of those authors who does the thing you’re not supposed to do and reads their own reviews, lol.) (I just realized this could be taken as incentive to write a positive review… I’m also an author who appreciates honest reviews even when they’re not favorable, so please don’t feel bad writing a review if you don’t end up liking a story. XD) (I probably should have just kept my mouth shut. XD XD)
I don’t have a strong preference. The contact form might be simpler. 🙂
Thank you! ^-^

This is such a cool idea! I have self-published my first book this year on Amazon. It’s a children’s book targeted to ages 9-12 called Memory Lane Was Moved. Here is the description:
When eleven-year-old Travis wakes up in a strange room with no memory, he embarks on an adventure of a lifetime. Teaming up with Sadie and her older brother Robert, Travis uncovers his past with surprising results. He encounters Larry, a mysterious man who appears to have known Travis before, and Lewis, an undersized fourteen-year-old who gets swept along into the adventure, as well. Soon, Travis discovers that this whole thing is much bigger than he had at first realized. An elusive company called SCAM has been planning to release a product into the world that could jeopardize the nation’s security: a product known only as HANDSHAKE. Travis and his friends must work together to stop that product from being released before it is too late. This is Book One in the Memory Lane Series.
It is available as both a paperback and e-book. I would like an honest review of it for those who have already gotten it, but you don’t need to. Thank you!
@r-m-archer You have a cool name! It sounds so famous author-y!October 31, 2020 at 6:29 pm #86853(I think the forum might just really hate me today, because I tried posting my reply earlier and it got lost somewhere in the aether, I think. *shakes fist at technology*)
Anyway, @gracie-j this is such a lovely idea!! Thank you for starting this thread–I’m looking forward to checking out everyone’s books! 😀
I don’t currently have anything published, either self or traditionally (see, there’s this whole pesky business called “actually finishing the book” that I, ah…need to attend to :P). However, I do have a blog where I post some excerpts upon occasion. (For example, here is the most recent of my “story scraps,” as I call them. :D)
“Seven seconds till the end. Time enough for you. Perhaps. But what will you do with it?”
October 31, 2020 at 7:49 pm #86854@hobbitchild Memory Lane Was Moved sounds really interesting! I’ll have to check it out!
Thank you! ^-^

Heya!
So I do have a book published, but it’s not really for sale. I mean, you can buy it, but it isn’t really been edited as well as I’d like and I wrote it when I was 14 so…..ya.
BUT, I’m hoping to publish my standalone once it’s finished! (Working title: Reven) and that probably won’t be till next year (I hope it’s next year lol!) it’s gonna maybe be on the shorter side, and the scenes I’ve got so far seem to be going really well so hopeful it’ll be quick to publish. We shall see.
And obviously my series later on.
It’s awesome that so many of your are published! And I am going down the self-pub route myself. One of the main reasons is I like the idea of the freedom it gives. I can kinda do what I want.
And I learned that, when traditionally publishing, sometimes the publisher doesn’t want to make your first book into a series, even if you want to. And since I love series’….I’m out on that 😂
Tbh, I probably won’t be buying any of these. Maybe XD. Mirror-hunter sounds awesome tho. I love me some fantasy like that! But I have quotes a few books I haven’t finished, and I’m careful what I buy.
I was in a bit of a reading mood a few weeks or months back, but now not so much. (I know I’m changing the subject a little XD) I mainly wanna focus on my own stuff and not read other people’s 😂
That and I have this bad habit of skimming thru or skipping some to see what happens later, and then when I see it I don’t want to go back and read to that point 🤦🏻♀️ And I know I do this yet I keep doing it 😂

@r-m-archer Girl, I am JUST like that! And who said not to read your own reviews? I mean, how you s’posed to know what people thinkin’ ’bout it? You need to understand what you did good or not, so that you can grow. In fact, I have a tendency to stalk my readers and then quiz them about my book(s). It’s actually gotten great results, especially considering I intend to rewrite my first at some point, so…
Anyway…
I will DEFINITELY post a review on Amazon, Goodreads, and my blog, so…
Do you have a suggestion for which book I should read first?
@hobbitchild Thank you for joining us! *lifts teacup in salute* Memory Lane Was Moved sounds so interesting!
@lewilliams It’s the links, I think. I couldn’t get half of mine to work…Anywho, you’re welcome and thanks for waltzing in! (*notices that you actually didn’t waltz in this time* Well, I seriously saw a sashay in your step, so…)
When you do finish your book, what are your intentions? Self or trad? Also, when do you see The End coming?
@godlyfantasy12 Is your book for sale on Amazon?I actually published my first one at thirteen, so I’ve edited it several times since (and it’s still not good enough, so I’ll end up rewriting it), but I’ve had many people enjoy it, so don’t be ashamed at all of what you’ve written earlier in your career. I’d only been writing for barely three years when I published Held Captive, so…
I DEFINITELY recommend self-pubbing! I’m published through KDP (actually, pretty much every author on here is, so…), and I LOVE it!
I’ve gone through many periods of not feeling as motived to read as I do write–and vice versa–but I would encourage you to keep reading as much as possible. It is by reading more–be they good works, bad works, in the genre you like/write or not–that we grow as authors.
BTW, has anyone seen @leon-fleming recently? I’d been hoping he would join us.
