Hey guys, does anyone have quality resources on the history/culture of America between 1900 and 1950? I’m encompassing both the World Wars in that because they are important context, but I’m also very interested in the Roaring Twenties and how entertainment developed across that timeline.

I’ve always been interested in that time, and have gotten a lot of writing inspiration from the World Wars and that little bubble of colorful culture in between them. (My WIP is dreampunk fiction with a bunch of inspiration from those events.) I am also forming a senior thesis this year, which should be around 15-20 pages, and I want to write about something within that timeline.

So if anyone has books or quality resources, the dense academic kind that I can get a ton of info from, that would be amazing!

@freed_and_redeemed Honestly I don’t know who to tag for this. XD Since you like your historical fiction, Freedom, I’m targeting you.

@whalekeeper Sorry I donโ€™t know much. I can recommend good fictional literature from that time, but not anything with hard facts.

Oh dear, I love studying history, but I normally donโ€™t go out of my way to find big books about it ๐Ÿ˜‚ But Iโ€™ll do some looking and see if I can find anything that you might find helpful. :))

I’m an American history nerd, but I can’t think of anything that sounds dense and academic right now, except for the Ken Burns dust bowl documentary. I do have a couple short articles somewhere with information about the 20s.

Ah, 1900-1950’s. What type of resource/information do you want? I may not know it, but I can help find it. Especially if it’s clothes or culture.

Besides denser stuff, I’ll take anything I can get as long as it’s reputable. I can’t remember ever hearing of Ken Burns, thanks for the recommendation.

                  @koshka

I’m leaning towards researching why entertainment changed drastically within that time period. Things like radio and film. For example, it might have been utilized for propaganda in WW1 (cartoons, advertisements, etc) and expanded from there in ways people couldn’t have imagined.

Literally preteen me. Ancient Egyptians and dinosaurs… When I was six I owned Curse of the Pharaohs by Zahi Hawass and was obsessed, read that book to pieces. I always wanted to be an archeologist. What was/is your obsession? XD

So, this is technically a hair tutorial, but it has quite a bit of history as well. The blog seems to have quite a bit of other information on the 20s too. Delete the space after the h.

Awesome. I’ll start digging this evening.

Right off the top of my head I know that WWI and the reformed American patent system both majorly contributed to technology, which changed the face of entertainment for the 1900’s. I’ll try to find where I know that from.

Archeology, that dear little side dream. I started getting interest in it with historical costuming, which led into experimental archeology and viking burial sites. From there…well, my favorite places to research are the British isles, the Baltics, and Isreal. I enjoy finding out how to put a thousand tiny pieces of artifacts together until you find a long lost story.

I didn’t know about the patent system update, that is really helpful to know… Huh… I did a lot of research on patents a couple years back but all the information disappeared from my brain after I finished the assignment.

Awesome. Iโ€™ll start digging this evening.

I’m going to be doing a looooot of digging in the next five months, so I appreciate the initiative. XD

Sometimes it’s weird to imagine how many viking burial sites are really out there, you know? And as someone living near the East coast, the native American history is also fascinating to wonder about. Who lived on this very spot?

Historical costuming? What kind of costumes did you put together?

I’ve long wanted to make a swing-inspired dance outfit, except the idea in my head looks a little too masculine to wear at parties. It would be weird to show up at the seasonal line dance in a shirt and trousers, as a girl, you see.

If it was for an assignment, there’s little hope that it actually stays in my brain. XD

Hm. That is really interesting to think about. I, for one, am glad there are so many viking burials. Especially the ones with ships.

Well, I have pretty much finished a civil war ensemble (all layers ect.) except for boots/shoes and a bonnet (which are more expensive to get than you’d think). It’s all based on period patterns and stuff. But I’ve designed ensembles for all sorts of time periods that I’d love to make someday, and of course have spent wayyy too much time in random research. XD Although, I haven’t done much after about 1910, except for army/medical uniforms.

                              It’s so much fun.

I don’t remember any good references off the top of my head right now. However, I’m always up for a challenge! I need to be looking into the 1900s anyway for a project today, sooo…

Hiiii ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป So, I will first say that a lot of my research has been sporadic or else focused on a single specific topic, so I honestly don’t remember a lot of sources I used for a lot of research by this point XD

And most of my research is focused on WW2๐Ÿ˜…

But each of the decades were really marked by specific things:

The 1910s was really mostly marked by a slowly changing culture and WW1.

The 20s was really the cultural growth/shock time, with the end of WW1, the onset of a lot of new entertainment, the Jazz age, flappers, economic growth, mass consumerism, the rights of women to vote, prohibition, the beginnings of Planned Parenthood (officially began in 1916, but the 20s is when it began to slowly take off), the beginnings of the Eugenics that would sweep the USA during the 30s, the Red Scare/increasing numbers of American communists, the Scopes trial/the beginnings of secular education and the introduction of the Evolution theory to schools, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (and an earlier recession in the first few years after WW1), and, in Europe, when Hitler committed the Beer Hall Putsch in 1922, which marked his first attempt to take over Germany, the formation of the USSR, the rise of Mussolini, and the establishment of the League of Nations, the original United Nations organization. The 20s was marked by a lot of cultural change and world events.

The 30s in the USA was marked mostly by the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, racism, and Eugenics. It was also marked by the invasion of China by Japan, the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, the Munich Agreement (which gave the Sudetenland part of Czechoslovakia to Germany), the beginning of the persecution/Holocaust of the Jewish population of Europe, and the invasion of Poland/the beginning of WW2. The 30s was marked as a time of economic collapse and political unrest and was a decade that really set the stage for WW2.

And then, of course, the 40s was pretty much just marked by WW2. It was a time when countries came together but also a time of a lot of bloodshed and death and darkness. I have too much information stored in my head to honestly write it all down here, but if there’s anything specific you’d like to know about this time, just let me know.
