@valtmy @christianna-hellwig Shall I add you two to my list of potential characters? It’s okay if you don’t want me to. 😉 If so, tell me a bit about yourselves 🙂

@valtmy Yes, those are all very helpful! I especially like “make those sentences as snappy and quotable as dialogue”. I’d never quite thought of it that way before. Thanks! 🙂

@valtmy You and your family are in my prayers! I was reading Psalm 139 this morning, and part of it speaks about how there is nowhere we can go, where the presence of God is not. Height or depth, day or night, one side of the sea or the other “even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me” (verse 10). So I want to encourage…[Read more]

@valtmy I find reading description simply tedious, and I know this reflects in my own writing. I definitely know what you mean!! (Visual mediums just spoil us, don’t they?)
Often rough drafts for me look a lot like lines of dialogue and action beats, and then later I have to go in and add the setting’s details. But it’s really helped me to remind…[Read more] -

Thanks for the input! Great advice!!! I’ve been struggling over the cover of my book for a long time, but I think I have it figured out now 🙂

@valtmy The opening grabs my attention. I felt a good sense of the characters until you introduce Lu Mo and Pan Kun. Then it became harder to remember everyone’s names. I think giving Lu Mo a distinct characteristic that the reader can latch onto would help that. You did this well with Muchen, I thought. I got a visual of him almost immediately.…[Read more]

@skredder That’s been one of my fears, that people wouldn’t stick around long enough to see her growth. But I’m glad to hear that seeing the character change helps to make them likable.
@sam-kowal That’s so interesting! I’ve heard about Likability, Proactivity and Competence before, but not Disability. I find that more compelling, actually. It…[Read more]

So I’m not looking for cover design tips, I’ve already read the whole internet on that topic 🙂 But I want to hear what covers you all think are well designed – fiction, nonfiction, I really don’t care, I just want to know what you think looks good!!

@dekreel I agree with the others, that it could benefit from more tension. I’d also try to think of ways to make the main characters more distinct from each other. This could also be a source of conflict, not that they dislike each other, but that different personalities can create obstacles they have to overcome because they care about each…[Read more]

@jenwriter17 I’d imagine somewhere in the tween-early teen age, since that’s how old the MCs are, but I don’t know for sure
@sam-kowal @valtmy Thank you both so much! It helps a lot 😀

Greetings, Kapeefers!
So when I was thirteen, I spontaneously decided that I was going to write a children’s book series. I started writing several of them before I found myself buried in writer’s block, so I walked away from them.
Lately I have been considering coming back to them. So today I read Mariposa’s article on Pixar and children’s…[Read more]

Ariella Newheart replied to the topic How many characters is too many? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 2 months ago
@valtmy I guess “sprawling epic” would be a good phrase to describe my series, yes.
Be clear on who your main characters, supporting characters and minor characters are and which of them you plan to give their own “arc” or “story thread”.
Ah, yes. That gives me an idea of what I need to do. I appreciate all the advice, it is very helpful. 🙂

@ariella-newheart 30 characters may not be too many for a series. My favorite analogy about this, is imagining myself (the writer) having a pitcher of water. Each character is a glass, and I decide how many glasses there are, and how much water I pour into each glass. In a short story for instance, I won’t have a lot of water, so pouring just a…[Read more]
