Sure. Here you go:

Since this story is abandoned, I won’t need a very specific and detailed edit or review. Just some general comments to improve my writing is all I’m looking for. 🙂
Yeah, I was going for a quick pace and…[Read more]

So instead of working on my WIP like I should, I was browsing through my old writing files today and found one of my abandoned fantasy stories from way back. I still like some parts of it so I’m thinking of using them for future projects. Thus I have decided to share this prologue to see what you guys think.
This prologue takes place generations…[Read more]

valtmy replied to the topic Unlikable Protagonist? in the forum Characters 8 years, 2 months ago
I think it’s all right since you are planning for your protagonist to have character development and a character arc. That your protagonist may not be very likable at the start may in fact be a good thing (because it’s terribly boring to read about impossibly perfect human beings who can do no wrong).
I think most readers can…[Read more]

valtmy replied to the topic Best Cover Designs in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 2 months ago
Perhaps this is just me but I dislike covers that illustrate and give readers a clear idea of how the characters look (I want to be able to use my imagination and if I don’t think that the “beautiful heroine” or “handsome hero” shown on the cover is beautiful or handsome, that puts a damper on the whole reading…[Read more]

The best character in ATLA is, naturally, Iroh.

This actually isn’t all that bad. The writing flows nicely and does fit that of a children’s book. Though I agree with @sam-kowal that there is not enough tension that would keep a reader (especially a child) engaged. The story so far seems to be more of a description of the events that are happening as there is not much conflict or…[Read more]

valtmy replied to the topic How many characters is too many? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 2 months ago
How many characters is needed really depends on your story. If your series is supposed to be a sprawling epic, having 30 recurring characters might be appropriate or even expected. Just a few tips that might be helpful:
- Do not introduce too many characters all at once. This will just get confusing for readers.
- Be clear on…

I think you’re right! I forgot about the Three Musketeers… Hmm… it’s fine I suppose. I should still probably be able to make this idea work.
Actually, now that I think about it one of my characters could sort of fall into the creepy stalker stereotype rather easily. He’s an artist who thinks of the girl as his muse and spouts…[Read more]

Thanks guys for all your inputs! I have quite a few “bad romance” ideas now though I think I will need to write multiple books if I want to cover everything here.
But now I’m also thinking of presenting a “good example” of a romantic relationship in my story… This is weird to ask considering the title of this thread but are there any specific…[Read more]

Hey! As some of you might know, my current WIP is a satirical take on the romance genre. I think I have pretty much viewed all the relevant articles and videos on the KP site so the general concept for my main storyline is set.
However, I’m still on the hunt for more cliches because I need ideas for my worldbuilding, subplots etc. So if you guys…[Read more]

Hi! Just some tips…
- If events that happened in the previous book are not important, then there is no need to cover them again. Just cover the main points.
- Please don’t have a “nothing happened” time jump between books. Your characters will not seem active if they just sat around for a couple of months/years.
- Weave in a…

valtmy replied to the topic Quests and Fantasy Cliches in the forum Fantasy 8 years, 2 months ago
Just off the top of my head…
Quests usually involve an impossible task or saving the kingdom.
Types of quests (can be combined):
- Defeat the Evil Overlord
- Rescue the Princess
- Defeat the Dragon or (since this is becoming more common) Befriend the Dragon
- Find the Magical Artifact of Great Power before the Evil Overlord who…

valtmy replied to the topic First Short Story in the forum Short Story Critiques 8 years, 2 months ago
This is really funny! I like it. Just a couple of suggestions:
#1: The story sounds like something your main character is recounting from her past (e.g. the sentence “Anyway back to the story”). I think it can be improved with some tweaking and rephrasing to lessen the distance between the readers and the narrative so that the first…[Read more]

I think you can check out some autobiographies or biographies that people have wrote about their own families to see if anyone has a writing style that is effective and suits your vision.
However, a major challenge I think you are likely to face would be finding a way to approach this task and present the information you find. Especially if you…[Read more]
