Oh yeah. I can do that. I have an analysis book going right now.
“…a bedraggled sharp-featured wayfarer approaches, his dirty face streaked with sweat” (Jerry Jenkins The Chosen: I Have Called You By Name, 266).
Formula used:Â “a” + [condition] + [facial feature] + [apparent occupation] + [action] + “,” + [pronoun] + [unusual physical…[Read more]

Hello Faith! Glad you like my name too!
My middle name’s Steven. So, I’m Seth Steven O. My family circle is at 9, including a brother and a sister, parents, maternal grandparents, and two aunts. Extended family is enough to start our own town from my grandmother’s side alone.
Ironically, my favorite genre is fantasy for the exact…[Read more]

Did anyone see that KP video on being a good reader to be a good writer? The point’s basically that reading helps build one’s skills.
I noticed she mentioned analyzing character arcs and plot outlines. So, what about description? Like if another writer writes “shelf of rock” would using that phrase in one’s own story be growing one’s skills, or plagerism?

Deepest darkest secret, eh?
Well, some years back I was a not-so-secret secret agent on the NANOWRIMO forum: “Agent 00S.” 😉

Yeah, I think a novelette would be more my speed. My problem is generally coming up with too much than too little. Scaling down to short stories will be quite the challenge.
However, I love challenges! Let’s see how it goes.
As for themes, there are also some articles and a podcast episode on the Story Embers site that could help.

Thank you for your suggestions! I’m glad you like what I have so far.
I haven’t considered a theme of doubt. I’ll certainly add that as a possibility.
Yes, the theme would depend on the plot and the characters (or vice versa). The first short story is meant to be like an origin story for the main character. I suppose then the theme should be…[Read more]

@abigail-mHi Abigail! Nice to meet you!
I don’t think I have a favorite setting. It kind of depends on the story. Though with most of my initial settings, a fireplace ends up in there somewhere. XD
My favorite archetype is the…[Read more]

Hi! I’m struggling choosing a theme for a detective short story.
What themes do you think could appear in this genre?
I already have these listed below:
Courage
God’s Justice vs Man’s Justice
God’s Mercy
Life After Death
Loving Enemies
Morality
Obedience
Relativism
Sin & Salvation
Spiritual Warfare
Truth vs Deception

I like how MacGyver repurposes things. I was thinking about giving my protagonist the same skill. The thing is, who’s to say whether or not someone would use it for something bad in real life?
We’re talking turning using household items to make DIY bombs, or a step by step way to break into someone’s house. How would I be able to portray this…[Read more]

Hey Lexi! Nice to meet you!

Hi! Typewriter77 here! You can call me Seth, though. I write in the usual genres of fiction: fantasy, contemporary, thriller, fairy tale, superhero, etc. I’d also like to experiment with other, less used, genres, including atompunk, mecha, and Wuxia.
