@hope That’s a good point. I do have different expectations for a modern as opposed to a classic book. Of course, good writing is always good writing, but each age has its own trends. For Sherlock Holmes, I really wish the villains showed more emotion and incorporation when they were caught and I thought there could have been more emotion,…[Read more]

@bluejay, how did you go yesterday? I don’t know how your Sundays are, but I was out most of the day and so not reading any fiction wasn’t really a challenge anyway. @sarah-h, I’ll do the Bible Challenge with you on Monday the 24th July to start with if you like. I like your idea of 2 1/2 hours of time with God! FABULOUS idea!!!! 🙂 I spend 1 hour…[Read more]

@sarah-h I think that’s a great idea too. I sometimes don’t think I’d have enough time, but that’s because I fill it with other stuff. Like 2 1/2 hours on my laptop. How would I be able to help you?

hmm @sarah-h, that’s a good point, but if so, I think the author could have made that clearer.

Sherlock would say he never guesses, @hope . He makes observations and deduces from them. When there are several possible deductions to make he chooses the most likely based on the facts. So there is very little guesswork involved. It is more clever thinking. 😉
I wouldn’t call Holmes unhappy, @sarah-h . He is most happy when investigating a…[Read more]

Those are some good points @sarah-h though different from what I came up with. I’ll put mine up for comparison.
I will start with the martyrdom of man first since it was the foundation for my conclusions on Watson’s attraction. Honestly, I had never heard of the book before (at least I don’t think), but I pulled up Wikipedia on it and read what…[Read more]

I haven’t read Sign of Four before, but I’m thinking that Watson’s attraction to Mary is entwined with the main story plot somehow, like Sarah said. I also think it serves to contrast Watson’s character and Sherlock Holmes’s character. Watson is much more emotional and open about his emotions, whereas Holmes doesn’t have much emotion at all.…[Read more]

Hm… I really like The Fire Ships. There are twelve episodes, I’m pretty sure— all roughly an hour and 45 minutes. It’s been a while since I last saw them, but as I recall The Fire Ships is pretty clean. All the others are running together in my mind, so I can’t remember which ones needed screening and which were fine… but overall the stuff…[Read more]

@Sarah-H hmm… it depends. I’ve seen them too, and love them, and as far as violence goes if your brother’s seen Master and Commander he can see HH, but I’m seventeen and there are parts my parents skip when they watch it with me for other reasons. We actually skip one whole episode— The Duchess… something or other, and fragments of the rest.…[Read more]
