@inkling-for-christ Well… ‘the baby squealed’ is telling what happened but it’s not emotional telling, which is what limits the story. Your second example is certainly more descriptive, but sometimes you’re not going to want that much detail or your story will be extremely long.
I would focus on the emotional telling, for example, you…[Read more]

@ethryndal That’s a really intriguing idea, about the Knights of Ren. It seems like either they would have to take over as main villains, or Episode 9 wouldn’t really have one, because Kylo…[Read more]

@emily-d I really, really liked A Wrinkle In Time
It was thoughtful, meaningful, almost spiritual, and it had a lot of intriguing symbolism and thing s like that. Open respect for Christianity, too, although it did mention there being good qualities in other religions.
Plus, Meg and Calvin are really great characters. Meg’s internal conflicts…[Read more]

@inkling-for-christ Yes, that’s exactly it. SHOW the environment, don’t have the narrator TELL the reader what it looks like. Have it be more like you’re looking directly through the narrator into the story, rather than that they’re trying to summarize what they saw for you and tell it back to you

@emily-d 😀 Yeah, I have read it
I was at first expecting to completely hate it
But, I actually really like it
Elizabeth is a great character, and the plot is interesting, and Jane Austen’s writing is really sophisticated and intelligent
It’s lacking all of its dragons, and 100% percent of its epic battle scenes, but it’s still quite…[Read more]

@winter-rose I love the updated one
I think there needs to be something more connecting the first sentence with the second, though.
It would work great early on to have
Another bodyguard would give anything to protect a lady from the Slate family.
BUT Cocky Rook Warren is afraid of girls, or at least that’s what his fellow bodyguards a…

@inkling-for-christ Everything that the course teaches about showing and the techniques to use it more effectively, for example, body language, can be transferred into first person just by changing what the character says, for example
“I walked down the hall slowly, feeling nervous (telling)
would change to
“I shuffled down the hall, my hands…[Read more]

@winter-rose XD This sounds really funny
I’m guessing Rook is actually an alternate version of Sam, from another dimension?
I don’t have much experience with blurbs, but I like this one. It seems slightly long, like the others are saying.
“A different bodyguard would give anything to protect a member of the Slate family.
Not Rook. Not if his…

@alia Well, you’re right, a lot of it was a copy… but for some reason they played it in a way that seemed fresh to me. Although, I will say, the characters were definitely a stronger point than the plot
I think it would have been great for Rey to turn to the dark side, too 😀

Stan really, really takes offense at this. He is a dragon, after all. And an angry one, right now.
*puts Stan to bed*
*whispers*
Okay, now maybe I can help.
So, it sorta depends on the dragon. Someone like Stan… well, that would be pretty easy. He’s small and can’t fly. (please, don’t ever read that, Stan.)
