Hi, Faith! I can’t say that I completely agree, but I do see what you mean. And please don’t feel bad about bringing up an old topic; it was a while ago, and not many people saw it. 🙂

@jadamae – Thanks for sending me your story! The past few days have been busier than I thought, but hopefully I will be able to finish it tomorrow. I’ve only read a few pages, but I really like it so far. 🙂

Hi @C-C-Lane , welcome to the forum! The Black Arrow is one of my favorites, too. Aside from the slow middle section, it’s probably one of the best medieval books I’ve read. Oh, and the book review starts next Monday, so you have plenty of time to join. We’re doing Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle. 🙂

@Timothy-Young As a Christian, I would avoid writing alien fiction for several reasons. First of all, I second what Kate and Gabrielle said: aliens don’t exist, and writing about them as if they did does more harm than good, since there are cults who believe in and worship them. And now that the intelligent design of the universe is becoming…[Read more]

I’m interested! Beta reading is such fun. Here’s my email- I’ll break it up into sections so it doesn’t become a link:

You’re welcome, @sarah-h ! Glad to share the book love. 🙂
I think it’s possibly the most re-readable book in the series. I just love great beginnings! -

@overcomer – oh wow, thank you so much for recommending Study in Scarlet. I just finished it, and I will never see Sherlock Holmes the same way again. I really like his original character.

Oh, and as of this minute, Sign of the Four and Study in Scarlet are both free on iBooks. I hope they remain that way….

I’ve never read Study in Scarlet, but I have read most of the others, so I’m pretty well acquainted with the characters. I’m so glad we’re doing a Sherlock Holmes story! This is going to be fun. 🙂

My sister says you definitely have to read the first one first! 🙂 I agree.

They can be stand alone, @daeus , but the first one, “A Study in Scarlet” introduces the characters and the beginning of their acquaintance. You can tell that the author is meeting them for the first time too. It’s exciting, and pretty special in my opinion. After that, you can kinda read wherever you like in the series for the most part,…[Read more]

That would be cool, @daeus . I don’t really mind for myself since I’ve read them all already, (several times 🙂 ) but I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on getting the best first impression, you know? (unless it doesn’t matter to them) Plus the first one is pretty good!

Here are my picks:
1. The Hobbit
2. Ender’s Game
3. The Sign of FourJust wondering, @daeus , why The Sign of Four? It’s good, but it’s not the first book of the Sherlock Holmes Series. Since some of us may not have read the first book, A Study in Scarlet, that might be a better pick. It truly introduces the characters.
Sorry if I’ve been a…[Read more]

I know I already voted, but as a second-and-third-place vote I second Greta’s votes for Sign of Four or Treasure Island. *stares at word repeat* Yep. It’s past my bedtime for sure.
