@dragon-snapper What sub-genre of sci-fi are you looking at writing? Hard sci-fi? Space opera? Steampunk? Something else? I haven’t written much sci-fi, but I’ve read a decent bit, so hearing what type of sci-fi you’re looking at writing would help me know what to best recommend on the reading front.

Whew. I’ve got audacious goals again.

Writing:
.Finish my current WIP and get all major editing done.
.Outline and possible begin on my fantasy trilogy.

Oh yes yes this is a good idea. My spring writing goals are…

– Plot out the finale of my trilogy (I need to do that this month)
– Write book three in April/Camp NaNoWriMo
– Finish editing (2nd draft) book #1 and send it to one or two Alpha readers
– Run away screaming in panic as they read my precious mess of nonsense

And… quite honestly, most of my inspiration for the actual science-y stuff came from studying physical science in my schoolwork. Like… the nature of time. And space. And how gravity is a result of those two, bent. And how stars work… and what gases do what…[Read more]

Finish the second draft of my WIP, run through it one more time, and send it out to beta readers. Also write a novella. (Yes. The same novella I put int the Fall and Winter Writing Goals. *weak chuckle*)

@Dragon-Snapper As far as describing mechanics, I’d recommend getting a Star Wars cross-section book and studying it to death. And come to think of it, the Rogue One visual dictionary had some pretty good stuff on that as well.

(And that is as far as I’ll venture, because I’ve never written a sci-fi. 🙂 )

@aratrea thank you again for the help. 🙂 I’ll definitely be playing around with different ideas, and I do have two characters that should be able to fill the Saruman/Gollum position with a bit of tweaking.
