@northerner Ah, I guess I didn’t catch that. Well, I caught the part about heaven and earth and philosophies, but nothing else.

@northerner Hmm. What’s that a parody of?
The subject matter is really horrendous (I’m a metaphor fanatic), but I’m interested to know if there was anything particularly witty about it.

@northerner hm, yes. :/ Unfortunately the comedies have a lot of that. Quite honestly I stopped reading the comedies once I got a quarter of the way through The Merry Wives of Windsor. Not worth it. The Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing were good. Otherwise, pretty much senseless.

@northerner No. What’s it about?

@Northerner *is consoled* His histories are definitely my favorites. Most of his other work I really don’t care for. A few exceptions— The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, and Macbeth if only for the villain 😛 but the histories are most certainly wonderful. Probably doesn’t help that it’s my favorite period of history too.…[Read more]

@northerner Well, to start with, I haven’t made money doing it any way because I haven’t published, but there are a few clear facts. First of all, a lot of traditionally published authors don’t make money either. Second, with so much more of the profits you actually keep, it’s easier to make money self-publishing. Third, there are a lot of…[Read more]

Glad you’re all having fun with this 🙂 *applauds @northerner respectfully*
My vocabulary’s apparently grown since I took this test last year and I now average at around 29,000.

Just so you all know, I think the max score is somewhere around 45,000 hundred words. I was curious so I check-marked them all. ( @northerner which means you are a genius 😛 )

@northerner Ah, yes. Well, here’s some ideas.
1. You can point out some highly successful self-published book. I’m thinking of The Martian, but there are others. Just do a google search.
2. Point out how traditional publishing has changed. They now expect you to essentially sell most of your books for them.
3. Point out how self-publishing has…[Read more] -

@northerner Same; I haven’t read the Eagle for years. Though I do want to read it again. And Henty can be very dry…Beric was the only one that I thoroughly enjoyed, and that’s mainly because of the arena scene.

@northerner Part of the change might come in profits. An author receives all of the money from the book if they self-publish. Also, they may want freedom to do what they want (I know I do.) I know that our culture in the US is very much supportive of independent folks, so that may be part of the self-publishing. Also, it seems as if much more…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Love Triangles— what the Classical Authors knew that we don't. in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 2 months ago
@Northerner yeah. It was extremely poorly done, to say the least. I didn’t really have a problem with Tauriel actually— even though I’m a Tolkien purist as well 😛 — but the instant they made her the point of a triangle I lost everything I liked about her. It was just so not worth it. I still really enjoyed a lot of the Hobbit movies— Bilbo…[Read more]

Daeus replied to the topic Panel Questions in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 3 months ago
@northerner Absolutely. Just to clarify, you are talking about building an audience for your books, right? I thought possibly you might be asking about branding — like presenting a consistent impression of yourself in everything you do, which is kinda related, but much more of a specific topic.
