On Saturday my sister and I went to an SCA event, a Coronation. It was splendid and awesome and glorious and colourful and everything. As is my custom with SCA events, I was going to write it down afterwards.
Today I’ve written 3,000 words already, and was looking fair to finish by tonight (which is good, with Good Friday tomorrow).
Then I…[Read more] -

@Hope, @Kate-Flournoy, I move the sequel involves a double negative.

How did I miss this? This is so much fun! The way it makes fun of cliches, and the characterization is spot-on. Making fun of things in fairy tales works best when you’re writing in fairy-tale style yourself, like the part where Daeus gives his rousing speech and then says it would be better on a battlefield with an orchestra.
Have you read The…[Read more] -

@Graciegirl, TMWWT is tough for a first book of Chesterton’s to read. I’m impressed.
As to what it means, some speculate it’s about the problem of evil, what with so many references to the book of Job, and Syme saying at the end. . . well, what he says, anyway, when Gregory comes back. (I’m trying not to spoil it.) There are lots of other…[Read more] -

@Dragon-snapper, don’t think of it as editing, because that conjures up images of people pointing out your comma splices and adverbs or passive voice and such things. Beta-reading is for the higher-order concerns like character development and cliched plots and that kind of thing. Kate summed it up well as telling the writer everything they did…[Read more]

@anna-brie, one of the things I like about Chesterton’s detective stories (he had more of them than just the forty-nine or so about Father Brown) is that he doesn’t view a corpse as a collection of scientific things and maybe a clue or two, the way Holmes seems to. He keeps the right idea of it being a human being, a destroyed image of God, and…[Read more]

@Daeus, I have to disagree about the ending. It had to be a miracle. You see, people aren’t truly converted by force of arms, or, in most cases, by arguments. It has to be God who converts them. So by beginning the story with Michael’s miracle, and ending it with one for the four other characters (I’m trying not to spoil it), it actually…[Read more]

@Dragon-snapper, 12 pages is certainly nothing to sneeze at. I’m almost done with my post.

For some reason the thread on the Ball and the Cross seems to have vanished — shall we try again?

Goals for Spring, let’s see. (I approve of this idea. Doing things by quarters makes them so much more manageable than trying to plan out for an entire year.)
–Does “survive this week” count? My sister had a music competition today (2nd place), has a rehearsal on Tuesday, concert on Wednesday, and then early Saturday morning we all go for a…[Read more]

Northerner replied to the topic A Short Fairy Tale Story in the forum Short Story Critiques 7 years, 8 months ago
I must admit the end is disappointing — he solves the problem and he doesn’t get her hand in marriage for it? This is entirely against all fairy-tale protocol!
I’d love for her to start a book club, or arrange some way for royalty to get to know each other before marriage without the inconvenience of a ball.

@Daeus and Company, I’m done for now: I got my paper quasi-outlined and some sources compiled. I should really write a blog post too, but I have an exam first.
