@kate-flournoy, I like making fun of Romeo and Juliet, though I make fun of pretty much any romance anyway. I had a class on his Comedies two semesters ago, which left me not liking him as much as I had before — I missed a lot of the crude jokes when I was just reading on my own, as a kid. It’s kind of like Chaucer that way, safer for younger…[Read more]

I love this sort of thing! I like Shakespeare myself, but not so much I can’t appreciate it when someone makes fun of him.
@kate-flournoy, if it’s any consolation, I like Henry the Fifth too.

@theliterarycrusader good betas and editors are essential. I’ve started too many self-published stories that could be good if only they weren’t produced prematurely.
@daeus, what about the concern that self-published authours can’t make any money?

@Gabriellemassman I love Mythopoeia! It’s one of the things I tell every writer they ought to read.
I know what you mean about the time management struggle. I’m a junior in college and starting to get into the heavier semesters, and not having time for all the things I’d like to get done — for instance, I’ve only read your first post, so if…[Read more] -

@theliterarycrusader, isn’t it genii? (From your fellow grammar Nazi)
And my score was somehow 40,300??? I didn’t know I knew that much.

This topic came up the other night at supper, and I was able to talk about it fairly intelligently, which shows I’ve learned something from being here :). But my parents are of the generation before self-publishing became a viable option — to them, “self-publishing” equals “vanity press”. Which is a pity, because I’m considering self-publishing…[Read more]

Eagle of the Ninth? There are people in this world who have read it? Finally!
@dragon-snapper, it definitely wasn’t Beric. It’s been a while since I’ve read the Eagle, so I can’t say. But the Eagle beats Beric all hollow. (Not that any Henty books fall in the category of great art, or even art done well, to begin with, but still.)

@winter-rose That’s a very good question :). Add to that that I have a blog to keep up, and I’m line editing Song of the Sword for @Hope, and trying once in a while to assure my current characters that I’m not giving up on them. Oh, and sleep. Because, you know, after a long day where you’ve been pushing them off to the side, right when you go to…[Read more]

@Winter-rose, I’m majoring in Creative Writing, so sometimes I have the opposite problem: too much to write. For example, I’m in my third year, so I’ve gotten past all the general classes and am starting to get into the ones that are important for my major. Which means this semester I have a creative nonfiction workshop, a writing workshop that so…[Read more]

@winter-rose, I suppose it’s not strictly true that my father teaches both of us. It’s been two years since I was home-schooled, but I guess I’m still not used to the thought. For several years he did have to teach both me and my sister, not all the subjects (my mother had almost everything related to English and History, up until we get into high…[Read more]

@winter-rose, one good question deserves another. My platform, such as it is at the moment, is my blog: Of Dreams and Swords. I’m hoping to get my historical fiction stories traditionally published — someday. I know it’s dangerous to just say “someday” because it makes it easier to believe that if you wait long enough you’ll wake up eventually…[Read more]

@winter-rose Congratulations, you just wrote your mission statement, or definition of your purpose, or whatever it’s called. When you do start that blog, post that (or something like it, if it changes before then, as our thoughts tend to do) for people to find.

Northerner replied to the topic Love Triangles— what the Classical Authors knew that we don't. in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 10 months ago
@kate-flournoy, I’m so glad to find people who don’t like that triangle! It annoys me so much. . . first of all, I’m something of a Tolkien purist and since I believe good books make bad movies (with extremely rare exceptions) I wasn’t about to watch any Tolkien movies. Then the Hobbit ones started coming out, and people who’d seen them, and knew…[Read more]

@winter-rose, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who waits to show my parents my stories until they’re close to finished. My family as a whole is not really involved, though my sister is quite a bit. Most of my support and feedback comes from writer friends, and I have quite a good score on community and feedback. Family support, not so much.…[Read more]

Hmm, it could be both. Or either one. Whichever the panel would rather talk about, I suppose, though the broader topic might be better. - Load More
