@dekreel It’s a college class. Technically I’m in my senior year of high school, but I’m taking college classes at our community college… Complicated 🙂 How is your KPA going?

So much truth in one forum thread… 😀
You know you’re a writer when your garbage can is overflowing with papers that say ‘Chapter One’ at the top.

MNValentine replied to the topic What next? in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 4 months ago
@pickupyourpenandwrite Yet again there’s no right answer. Some people rewrite completely, other people do more like me. I write it through the first time, kind of keeping in mind changes I need to make. When I finish, I do a round two where I make all the major changes – filling huge plotholes, changing cheesy fight scenes, turning two battles…[Read more]

@dekreel Being a squirrel would be awesome! I’m terribly fond of squirrels, if you hadn’t noticed…which obviously you had 🙂

MNValentine replied to the topic Chapters in a First Draft in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 4 months ago
@waterlily I’ve always put in chapter breaks as I write and then rearranged them later as needed. I know some people who do it other ways and it works for them, so I’d say the answer to this is the same as many writing questions – do what feels natural.

MNValentine replied to the topic Kicking Off the Plot in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 4 months ago
@daeus When I say action I mean the point at which the plot officially kicks off, which also happens to be the first moment of mortal peril. There are a couple points of minor conflict in the beginning, and the story is set up – important things to the plot do happen. I found a reference chart based on the book you suggested (which looks useful,…[Read more]

Okay. I guess I do have to ask, since I’m a little worried. I think I know what everyone’s suggestions will be but…
My current novel, in rewriting for the millionth time, has a very long beginning. A lot of important things happen in the beginning, but it isn’t exactly exciting. The action doesn’t kick off until chapter seven or eight. One of…[Read more]

@kaya-young Hi and welcome to the forum!! I was also homeschooled 🙂 I’ve heard of some of Jeff Wheeler’s books, but I’ve never read any of them. Maybe I should 😀
What was the last book you read and did you like it?

Not at all! Actually, I think it’s a fairly practical way to send a message in some situations. Like @hannah-olson said, just don’t overuse it.

@dekreel Definitely had that experience 😀

You know you’re a writer when you realize you have an entire drawer of notebooks filled with random ideas that you haven’t thrown away because you might want them later.

@dekreel Yours is really good! You could write an entire article about that…or a book 🙂 Human experience and and human nature can’t be talked about enough when it comes to writing.

How to Avoid Villain Monologues
Is there a bigger cliche than a villain winning a fight, standing over the imprisoned hero, raising his sword…and stopping to explain his evil plan? Why is this so common?
There are two major reasons villains monologue in books. The first is stalling, to…[Read more] -

MNValentine replied to the topic Alternatives to flashbacks? in the forum Plotting 7 years, 4 months ago
I’ve had this same problem before. There are a couple ways to handle it. You can just do flashbacks, which can definitely work if you do them well. But if you don’t like flashbacks, there are a couple other ways. @waterlily mentioned one way – having memories triggered by his surroundings, and just remembering her in his thoughts. You mentioned…[Read more]
