@christianna-hellwig Welcome!!! What kind of music do you listen to when you write? And as for advice… Don’t write about elves and dragons or fantastic battles. Write about human emotions and experiences.
Welcome again 😀

@that_writer_girl_99 I totally agree. I really loved the first Hunger Games book but the other two felt really forced. I’ve only seen the first movie and thought it was pretty good. Although even the second two books were more convincing than Twilight…

@ashlyvye Welcome to the bestistest place on the internet!! I love Marvel too, although I confess I didn’t care for Wonder Woman and don’t expect to like Thor: Ragnarok… Batman Begins was good though, although that’s the only Batman movie I’ve seen. Anyway. Enough of that. Nice to meet a fellow Gryffindor! Although I’m kind of split between…[Read more]

@aratrea I can probably do it. What exactly do you want us to do?

MNValentine replied to the topic Informal Survey in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 1 month ago
@daeus Definitely.
@that_writer_girl_99 @princessfoo Actually that’s not entirely true. I can’t speak for Twilight since I read only one book and hated it, but Harry Potter has very strong messages about love and self sacrifice. The movies almost completely erase these messages, but in the books they’re still there, and I think underneath the…[Read more]

MNValentine replied to the topic How many characters is too many? in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 1 month ago
@ariella-newheart Looks like you have a lot of good advice here 🙂 I always have a lot of characters too, so I’ve thought about this a lot. I think it depends partly on the length of the series. Thirty characters is probably not too many as long as they have page space for development and are in varying levels of importance. Putting them in groups…[Read more]

@sam-kowal Okay, I just almost wrote @stan-kowal… I love it! I would totally read it. I think it’s a great synopsis, too, but you might want to combine a few paragraphs.
Holidays are never as fun when you’re worried people are going to die once the feastings end.
Believe me, that tends to curb one’s appetite.
To be clear, it wasn’t us human…[Read more]

@introvert_girl Sorry about that, I was really tired and not making sense… I guess what I’ m trying to ask is where is the second book picking up? Have they defeated one problem and are now facing a new one? Are they in hiding in the middle of a battle, or are they in the middle of a previous conflict? You would approach these beginnings a…[Read more]

MNValentine replied to the topic The Beginning of the Sequel in the forum Plotting 7 years, 1 month ago
How did the first book end? That’s really important when it comes to starting a second book.
In general, a second book beginning should include a brief review – not a super long, in depth info dump – of the last book. If it has skipped time between books, you need to set up what the characters’ lives have been like and are now like since the…[Read more]

@valtmy Thanks! I confess most modern fantasy is increasingly boring…
Thanks for the lists! Lots of useful stuff here 🙂 Although I may need to make it a trilogy to use everything that caught my eye 😀 And thank you for your vote of confidence!!

@dekreel Thanks for the list! That’s an awesome list, actually, I’ll be sure to reference it. I confess I’ve watched the Worst Fantasy Novel Ever like twenty times before, but I should probably watch it again… 🙂

@rochellaine Never thought about the whole quest/question thing but that’s pretty cool. Thanks for your advice! I’ll probably use one or both of those 🙂

Okay. So I’m plotting for a fantasy novel that plays off of fantasy cliches, and it has to have a quest. I generally don’t write quests, and I’m having a tad bit of trouble coming up with one. What are some goals fantasy quests usually have?
Any other fantasy cliches are also welcome here!

Some other things to look for that I remembered after posting – Princess Academy by Shannon Hale, The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. Okay, I’ll stop making suggestions now.

Hm… I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks, but I do know a couple, maybe. I don’t know what genres you like, so I’ll make some random suggestions…
The Focus on the Family Chronicles of Narnia are good, but they are actually radio drama, not audiobooks, and I think our library system doesn’t have them, so yours might not either. Also a book…[Read more]

@valtmy This is a brilliant idea!!! I love what you have so far.
#1 @daeus stole the very words out of my mouth…or post. You can totally use age or gender differences to determine who has what power. Of course, it could also be interesting to go by family line.
#2 The time loop is the hardest thing. However, it actually does line up with your…[Read more]
