Jenna Terese replied to the topic How do you develop your story ideas? in the forum General Writing Discussions 5 years, 1 month ago
I always do a lot of brainstorming with a new idea (a.k.a. brain dumping into a journal). I basically just kinda write down whatever little ideas come to mind for the book idea, and when I feel like I have a good amount, I might try to arrange the ideas into plot points. At the same time I work on the characters too, figuring out…[Read more]

@joy-caroline Lemme run through a slightly embarrassing way of how I developed Under That Dusky Sky so far…
1. Cue me watching Monsters Inc. Seeing Randall, I think, “Well. I could do with some sort of character who can turn invisible who is super annoying and also a snitch.
2. Riding in a car a few weeks later, I’m thinking back to this one…[Read more]

Lin replied to the topic What do you do when you feel discouraged and feel like giving up? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 1 month ago
@kathleenramm I guess usually I just tell myself I’m too tired, and I go on and work on one of my other hobbies for a few months. Or I switch it up. Variety helps a lot.

What do you do when you feel discouraged and feel like giving up a novel or writing as a whole?
When I get discouraged, I first try to figure out why. Why am I feeling discouraged? Sometimes the answer is different, but most of the time its because I feel like my writing isn’t “good enough”. Which seems kinda silly, but it’s also a super common…[Read more] -

That’s really interesting how you thought Xavier was awful, but everyone liked him! You must be a better writer than you think.
That was one of my favorite books when I was nine! I haven’t read it recently, but I still have fond memories of it and of course Sage.
Interesting thought! I guess there might be…[Read more]

@gracie-j Thank you! I haven’t exactly tried writing a blurb for any one thing of my series, but I think now’s a good time to try.

@daisy-torres Ahhh might I suggest you a thing called DeepL Translate? It works so much better than Google Translate for Chinese-English translations…

@daisy-torres Dang, girl… That is a lot! While, I, too, have several books planned to write in Chinese, I have not attempted that yet… If you need me to check anything, feel free to ask!
Take a break! That is a lot!

@kathleenramm No, I haven’t tried. The time that I did try writing a story for a kid it ended up being kinda dark…thank goodness she couldn’t read…
My sister did write a kid’s book when she was a kid though! We’re probably all used to writing books for our age groups, haha…

Yes, I definitely agree about not having to read heavy material all the time. Sometimes, if I read too much heavy stuff it weighs on me and even gives me insomnia. Not that heavier books are bad, (they can teach you a lot of things), but too much of anything isn’t good.
So yeah, I too like to read a good children’s book here…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Well, I’m in the middle of The Brothers Karamazov, and I haven’t quite finished it yet, so… Other than that, excluding all the manga and books I’ve read for school, the last book I read was… The Summer of the Swans, by Betsy Byars. It won a Newberry Medal. My favorite thing was how nostalgic I felt reading it. The copy I have i…[Read more]

What was your favorite and least favorite thing about the last book you read and why? And what did it teach you about writing?Â
The most recent book I’ve read is Spinning Silver, which is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.
My favorite thing about it was the atmosphere. It was like a magical winter wonderland and the author did a really good job at…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic If you got to be a screen writer for a movie, what type of movie would it be? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 1 month ago
Oh, yes! A Pirate movie/Tv show would be so fun to write a screen play to. To see your swashbuckling story come to life on screen would be truly amazing.
I Think I watched Beyond the Mask a while back. What are some of your favorite things about the movie?
Mafia and Fairies? I’ve loved both for a long time, but it never…[Read more]
