@overcomer YES. One of my favorite things is being able to see storytelling principles of a sort in my own life. Thanks for sharing! And I agree that faith is certainly another major theme in Lord of the Rings.

@anna-brie Sorry to hear that. :/ Unfortunately, I don’t recall seeing any posts here either…
@hope Yeah, characteristic moments are harder when you’re plotting over a full trilogy. That story actually looks like a flat arc to me with just a really poignant third plot point. To turn it into a disillusionment arc followed by a positive arc, I…[Read more]

@jenali That does sound like a depressing book. Course I guess that isn’t exactly new to Dickens. =P Good example. Sometimes catharsis means giving another character a positive fate if the negative arc character can’t achieve any epiphany.

@dragon-snapper Yep. The more developed an antagonist is, the more likely he’s going to have a character arc. We’ll be discussing that in a bit more detail later on in the series, but the short answer is that either arc type can work–it all depends on the specific story you want to tell!

@dragon-snapper Haha, we did mention it in the video, but I think it’s a great example of catharsis! Setting up the end of the story with hope for the rest of the series was a great way of handling catharsis in that movie.

@Daeus I think lingering works. Better than anything I could come up with.
Aaand… honestly I’m not sure. It’s a toss-up. Both of those work in different ways… So helpful, I know. 😛

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how we integrate theme and premise. Let’s have a round of applause.
*deafening applause*@Rachelle I love it! Do it. Cliches aren’t cliches if they’re part of the theme and by extension necessary to the story.

@His-Instrument Oh look! A Les Mis RANT THREAD! :’D
@EMMA-FLOURNOY GET OVER HERE NOW.
*ahem* Love this topic. I could probably write a book about everything Les Mis did amazingly… you covered a lot of it. I’d also like to point out what a great job Hugo did of recycling characters— bringing them in again in all the most unexpected places…[Read more]

And hey, it’s not flattery if it’s true, now is it?As for descriptions… solemn?

@Northerner I would love to, especially as this is one of my absolute favorite time-periods, but I’m afraid my schedule will not allow for any consistent sort of time-table, at least not currently. Keep me on your list of for the future though— I really want to read this.
