@emerald-flyer Makes sense. Wayne Thomas Batson’s Dark Sea Annals are probably my favorite works of Christian fantasy and he’s currently re-releasing them this month, so if you’re looking for new books in the genre, that would be my recommendation. 😉

@perfectfifths Cool; to expand that a bit, putting otherwise-unsympathetic characters in sympathetic relationships can be really crucial for building empathy between the characters and the audience. If a sympathetic character likes an otherwise-unsympathetic person, it’s easier for the audience to like that person as well, which sounds like what…[Read more]

Wow… um… wow.
Okay that was basically my existence in a nutshell… I think I’m going to be floored and absolutely useless for the rest of the day. 😛
Thank you so much for sharing, @Christi-Eaton. That was beyond encouraging. -

@jessi-rae Neat; how far into the story are you?

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Discussion for Video Six: Positive Character Arc in the forum Discussion Questions 8 years, 8 months ago
@perfectfifths Ah; I see. Yeah, I would probably fit it into the positive arc then. Here’s a question to consider that you may find helpful: if you were going to go through and revise Sutcliffe’s book, how would you change the story/the protagonist’s character arc to make the story more enjoyable to you? I find that when I do this with books I…[Read more]

@Daeus I actually really, really, really prefer the first synopsis… *rueful smile*
When you say ‘make it clearer who it’s for’ are you talking about the target audience? If that’s the case, a more explicit (but still subtle) ‘mission statement’ might be all that’s required. Not knowing precisely what the underlying issue is, I would say is it…[Read more] -

@Jessi-Rae oh just pretty normal rhymey stuff. 😉 I like the poems that tell stories… or the ones that are almost like ballads. 😉 Not as good as I’d like to be, but I’ll keep practicing.

@perfectfifths Oh–I may have read that book myself a long time ago! I forget, but I know I’ve read a fair number of Sutcliffe’s works. Whether or not its a complex arc depends on how long it takes. If the initial negative arc is just a couple initial chapters or a prologue or something, I would probably say it doesn’t count since that’s just part…[Read more]

@perfectfifths So just to clarify, currently the midpoint represents a backsliding for Amrei? Backsliding can be a very effective tactic to take; however, generally that kind of moment like you’re describing happens better at the third plot point (I get into that in lesson nine on weaving theme into your story structure). I’d recommend choosing a…[Read more]
