Singapore sounds pretty interesting.
I’d venture to say though that the US was, at least at one point and to a great degree still is, the freest country in the history of the world. Yeah, you’re right about the crumbling part, but that really accentuates our strong foundation, cause if we fall, so falls the world economy and essentially the free…[Read more]

Awe, don’t put yourself down Kate, you’re 99.11% novelist.
By the way, have you ever taken that personality test thing?
I read this interesting article once that proposed (if I remember correctly) that the submarine was not able to make it back to shore because of something to do with the moon and tides.
You know, that theory sounds a whole lot…[Read more]

Whew! Glad to hear it, @Daeus, glad to hear it…
And believe it or not, I actually knew both of those facts. I just wish all the submarine crews hadn’t drowned trying it out. 🙁
In fact, if you read the story of that first submarine, there’s something about it that appeals to the novelist bit of me (which is like 99.10 % of me) very strongly. I…[Read more] -

Oh yeah, totally.
And I forgive you.
Amerifacts:
.Parliment didn’t have any right to pass the stamp act.
.The confederates invented the submarine. They also invented metal ships. -

Wait wait wait wait— Lew Wallace was American?
I take it all back. Every word of it.

Lew Wallace!!! Excuse me!!!
My, isn’t the weather nice today.
On the good side of things, I have noticed a few fields with cover crops which you never used to see before. On top of that, our neighbor is growing oats or something. I am nearly dying with serenity.
*Whimper face* Can only vote after primaries.

Ohio here as well… 🙂
Random fact of the day— we are currently suffering through the primaries of our presidential election, which happens every four years. And as @Daeus mentioned, today is Super Tuesday, which is special only because a great many of the states vote at one time.
And this election has been by far the craziest one I’ve ever…[Read more] -

I live in the bestistest state.
… Oh, that’s Ohio by the way.
Random facts about the USA:
.We have the world’s biggest hole in the ground.
.We are a republic, not a democracy (despite popular opinion)
.In the US, (at least it’s supposed to be this way) each state is more than just a division of the country with its own lower government. State…[Read more] -

I’m curious. What do you like about it, Sarah? Does it just publish to nook, or other retailers as well?

I’ve never used it, but I’ve heard of it. My impression is that it is a reputable company. That doesn’t mean it is the right one for you though.

Sure Tessa,
Stanza 1: “In a land long ago” might be better than “in a land far away”.
Stanza 2: “I’ll wipe out human”. It’s often ok to break gramar rules in poetry, but I wouldn’t end a sentence with an adjetive.
Stanza 3: I think the last two lines would flow better if you said, “His name was Noah. God drew him a plan.”
Stanza 5: Instead…[Read more]

Personally, I favor a backstage narrator voice, but if done well, it can have good effect. If you have a front stage narrator voice, you should go with Mr. and Mrs. or call them by their first names, or say “MC’s mom/dad”.

Perhaps I should reverse my theory. Na, that would leave me out. I hereby vote the matter (in most cases) inconsequential.

Anything really. Sometimes we ask for critiques. I just did a random survey on speed reading. We talk a lot about how to write better (characters, sentences, plots, etc.). We steal genius. We chat. Sometimes we play games. Really, do almost whatever you want.

Well, the busiest part of the forum is the General Writing Discussions page— and it’s just that, a page for the discussion of writing in general. Villains, character arcs, good words, description, dialogue— you name it. We can also have more genre-based discussions in the Fiction forum.
Critiquing questions (and excerpts) can be posted for…[Read more] -

*cringe* Research. Yep, I’m afraid so. If you can get a good idea of what historical figures were really like, you can weave ’em in much better and actually hit pretty near the mark.

Good points, @Daeus. Very good points.
Also, @sarah-h, it’s not so much about showing your character’s response to the arc as it is about showing the arc itself. Let me explain. Say you’re character has a problem with lying. As you progress through the arc, don’t show us the character lying less and less. Show us the changing perspective in the…[Read more]
