Oh wow @overcomer, totally no rush— I’d no idea you were actually going to do an in depth evaluation of either poem. 😛 Not that it won’t be welcome— but you really didn’t have to if it was too much trouble. I was thinking you would just skim over it once and tell me your general opinion.
So… no pressure. 🙂Wow, though, I really…[Read more]

Awesome, @spradlin! Very inspiring. That’s something I personally struggle with remembering, so it’s a good one to keep in mind. 🙂

Daeus replied to the topic Showing the Story in the forum General Writing Discussions 10 years, 6 months ago
Yes @kate-flournoy! No no POV telling! Bad.
A big part of showing is setting a strong tone. This is never done with statements. It is done with symbols, senses, and subtext. In fact, those should be the main emphasis of any story: symbols, senses, and subtext with senses probably taking the priority.
Smell is very important, but so are sight,…[Read more]

Awesome topic, people! Love it— everything said here thus far I completely agree with; in fact, you guys got most of it already. 😉
Another thing I’ll just add, though, is watch out for ‘telling’ in POV, even. Let me give you an example.
Trevor blinked, frozen in his seat, his heart thumping furiously in his ears. This was the chance of a…[Read more] -

@bluejay First of all, what’s a jumper?
First of all, I would pretty much agree with what Josiah said.
If it were me, I would just begin the letter with her name. Nothing before that.
I would definitely write a short letter, but that might have something to do with the fact that I personally loathe writing letters. Maybe Joshua is different,…[Read more]

Wonderful @spradlin!
Though I have a hard time imagining a bard singing something like this in a tavern… more like at a funeral. 😛

Hey, who says you can’t be willing to die for frozen raspberries @Daeus!?!? Why else do you think they say ‘to die for’?

Hm, yes @spradlin… though that might more denote (get it? Denote? *sigh* Okay, that was really bad) a… community for sharing noteworthy thoughts than a blog of just one person’s noteworthy thoughts.
I don’t know… thoughts?
Yes. I did just use ‘thoughts’ way too many times in one paragraph.

Ah— gotcha @Daeus. Thanks so much.
Yes, I know what you mean… it’s funny, but I’ve tried over and over and over to poeticize (like my made up word? 😛 ) about an object, but for some reason I can only do it about really deep thoughts. Concepts, if you will. Like with this one, I wanted to take the word ‘love’, which is so commonly misused…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy Is toil a one syllable word? Well then, I suppose I meant use a softer word.
What I meant by “replacing ‘cruel’ with ‘and’…” is basically, “The winds of age and fate and fill in the blank together racked and shook him.”
I think part of my problem with long poems is what my poems are about. They tend to be about objects, or though…[Read more]

We were posting at the same time @spradlin! 😀
Thanks for the pointers— I can see how that would be a problem, definitely. Would it work, do you think, to cut each line in half, where most of them have a slant rhyme with the middle of the prior line?

Couple questions, Daeus… ‘toil’ is a one syllable word. ???
Also, I’m not quite sure what you meant about replacing ‘cruel’ with ‘and’… I can’t seem to grasp what specific changes you were getting at.
And… oh yeah. Oops. He did lose his shield, didn’t he? *gulp* Man, that’s embarrassing. 😛
