Ellis went first. He cocked an arrow and raised his bow, desperately thinking back to the few lessons he had years before. He drew the bow and released it. The arrow managed to hit the target, but just barely. At least he hadn’t accidentally shot Ari.

He shook his head. “I haven’t done archery in a long while. You may need to teach me as well.”

Ellis gave Moth a warning glance, eyes slightly wider. He felt it would be better to forget that the past ten minutes had ever happened. He looked at Ari again. “You’re going to do archery now?”

Moth

“There was still a chance you could have won two out of three.”

Hey, it’s a perfectly reasonable question from Ellis. I’m sure there are plenty of princes in the school in the same position.

Ellis

“We were dueling.” Ellis jumped onto the change of subject quickly. “Moth won. He is very quick with a rapier.”

Moth

“You were the one who brought this up. Do not whistle past a graveyard, my friend.”

“Are you in competition for your kingdom’s throne?”

“Why would they hurt you?” Moth asked. He kept his eyes trained on Ari’s, refusing to miss any hints of emotion on the boy’s face.
