@bluejay I’ve figured out how the MC’s mother dies and some details of the MC’s development…both how she fails in the middle and succeeds in the end. 😉

@bluejay No later than 10:00. I’ll probably only be on for about 20 more minutes…unless I figure out the idea completely in which case I might stop sooner. 😉 One can hope, right?

@bluejay I’ll be outlining (or staring at the screen attempting to outline my novella) if you’re going to be on…

@C-C-Lane Not plot related, but you don’t have to have magic persay, even if you have what might be considered ‘magical abilities’. Since it’s fantasy, it could be an ability that runs through certain lines and has almost died out or something like that. That would mean the spell part might need a little tweaking…maybe he’s reenacting a legend…[Read more]

@overcomer *dashes to the rescue* *stumbles over own feet* I’ve written several novels, so let’s see what I can do. *rubs hands and grins*
I like to write chapter by chapter outlines if my work is bigger than a novella. That way you already know how the story is laid out, how it flows, etc. Though even with an outline, don’t worry if parts of…[Read more]

Yes! Count me in! I already carry around a notebook and pen. And try to watch people. This will help me remember to write down what I observe. 😉

Miss Morton is really the model client. She has small things she can present, even though they don’t make any sense to her. She’s kept notes and letters… And she’s calm. Probably calmer than Watson with his jumbled phrases and mixed up medications. 😉 She has a steadying influence on the story. One fairly calm figure amide the other extremes of…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy and then, maybe, if the Prince is mentioned in future novellas (like when He comes back) I’ll use capital pronouns. But I don’t want it to seem like He became something else by dying…

Here’s the deal, when I talk about the King, I have His pronouns capitalized. In the next novella, I’ll have the allegorical equivalent of the Holy Spirit and those pronouns will probably be capitalized. However, in my current novella, I’d like it to be subtler. The Prince is the Prince, but he’s among his people as a general. He’s there to serve…[Read more]

When writing an allegory, what are your thoughts on capitalizing the pronouns of the figure who is portrayed as God or Jesus? In my story, I have the word ‘Prince’ capitalized, but I’m wavering back and forth between capitalizing the ‘his’ and ‘he’ and such. It’s not as if it’s capitalized in the original Greek…that’s just something we’ve done…[Read more]

@overcomer Oh, I know. 😉 And yet, I find that quite a bit (not always…he’s wrong sometimes) the most likely thing is really the thing to have happened does happen. But there’s plenty of other stuff he does which is very clever. I love how he gets people to tell him things…though that’s later in the book. 😉

Hmm, Sherlock’s detective style. I like the cold, hard, logical approach as opposed to some detective stories where quite a bit of it is a hunch. That being said, there are many things Sherlock figures out which I think are quite lucky guesses. Don’t get me wrong, he’s very smart and there are lots of things people can figure out by observation…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy Similes (or metaphors) should be stated as fact, not comparison. I really like that. There’s been lots of good points made. I’m not thinking of any more right now except, to sum up some of the points… ‘write with confidence’. Leave off the seems and likes and hads and other little words. You know what you are writing. Act like it. 😉

Ah, I’m jealous of you guys who are editing. As for me, I’m still trying out outline. And I need the outline done by the 4th. I’ve a feeling I’ll be figuring out some things as I write this time. 😉

Nice topic! I agree 100% on all your points.
Using adjectives sparingly: When I was little, everyone was always telling me “You need more adjectives,” and “you can never have too many because the more descriptive your writing is, the better.” Wrong! You said it, Kate, there is such a thing as overkill.
But…but, wait. Y-you don’t like…apple…[Read more]

@Sarah-h, I agree with you. Although, I wouldn’t say that it’s wrong to create another world that doesn’t have Jesus Christ in it specifically. Now, I do think aliens would be going too far, but I don’t see what’s wrong with creating a world with say dragons or other fantasy creatures in them as long as it includes Christian morals and the idea of…[Read more]
