Sierra started the topic Size of a Writer's Vocabulary in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 3 months ago
So I’m going to go out on a limb here and start my own first topic… How many of you wordsmiths out there have wondered just how big your vocabulary is? Especially when compared to the rest of the… less linguistically gifted population. I did a fair bit of research on this a while back for an article I did on another blog, and I happened to…[Read more]

@ethryndal *plugs my ears and plays Feast of Starlight AKA ‘sappy music’ deafeningly loud* LA LA LA CAN’T HEAR YOU!!!
😀 But you’re right, it did undermine Legolas and Gimli’s friendship a fair bit. Unless you watch the LOTR movies first. Which you should.

I have not traditionally published yet, though I want to at some point. So I really don’t have experience with how hard it is, though I don’t think it is particularly easy. I do know one thing they look at now is an author’s platform. Even traditionally published authors are expected to market most of their own work, so the better platform you…[Read more]

Alright, @mark-kamibaya, I tracked down the KP song list and made some Spotify Playlists. Now help me spread them around! Anyone is welcome to make song suggestions to be added to these lists, or if there is another mood you need for your writing, feel free to suggest that too!

@mark-kamibaya, I tracked down that list. It was an email download so there’s no link to share unfortunately. I’ll be putting together a KP Spotify profile soon and I’ll be sure to share that with you. Thanks for the great suggestion!

@kate-flournoy I didn’t have a problem with Tauriel as a character either. Especially since she never talks to Bilbo, and since the book is told entirely from his perspective technically she could have been any one of the unnamed elves in the story. I also acknowledge that it was hardly fair of her to reject Legolas’s love over a dwarf’s crush……[Read more]

I tried it and got a 70. What about you, fellow interns? @christi-eaton @brandon-miller

I agree with @christi-eaton, you should write an entire article on this, @kate-flournoy! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the love triangle inserted into the Hobbit movies, and the Christine/the Phantom/Raoul triangle in the Phantom of the Opera if you’re familiar with it 🙂

@daeus Lucky you. I have so many books on my shelf, just staring at me, waiting. It’s not fiction (though it reads like it) but have you read God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew? I highly recommend that book. Or Uncle Tom’s Cabin? Debatable historical accuracy aside, it is a fascinating book.

@Daeus It could work fine, but I still like Dire Recompense. The ‘dire’ adds in suspense, and we don’t know if it is dire for the character, for those recompensed, or for all involved, so it doesn’t give anything away either (while still hinting at the final end).

I had actually thought about doing just that and had actually started doing it. I’m not sure if someone else on the team might have put one together already. I’ll try to hunt it down/make it happen. If we got it put together, could you help us share it around?

@leumeister @daeus What if you made them running…? Would that give a question – like, what are they running from?

@Daeus *tears at hair and wails to the night sky* I’m in the middle of this too and everything is such a mess right now… *draws deep breath* *calms self down*
Ok, firstly, if your book is ‘only’ 150,000 words I see no reason it can’t be one book. Especially if you plan on self-publishing. Authors are able to get away with longer books in…[Read more]

@daeus Oooh, this is exciting! I love the idea of trilogies. I’ve never written one, but I think it would be a fun idea!
I’ve read a couple of trilogies, though. The first example that comes to mind is, obviously, The Lord of the Rings. This trilogy has an ultimate goal that the main MCS are consistently working towards in every book. Namely,…[Read more]

Also, very late, but I wanted to post 😉
I love historical fiction in the Middle Ages… I haven’t read a lot of it, but the idea really appeals to me. I have written a couple of fiction stories, which aren’t quite fantasy, seeing as there’s not magic or mythical beasts (well, in one there is, but that’s a legend within the world 😉 ) at the most…[Read more]
