@Emma. That’s certainly a valid concern. I don’t like unrealistic, unhealthy, just peachy love stories either. However— keep in mind that you don’t have to have a ton of personal experience to write about something. Remember, Jane Austen wrote some of the most beautiful and popular love stories ever written, and she never married.
In reading…[Read more] -

@Rosey—yes, I agree. There should probably be in most cases a long prior acquaintance before anything gets serious. We covered this on the unrealistic romance topic, but I’ll say it again— we established that there is no such thing as love at first sight, only love and first acquaintance, and that is rare. It only happens when the two people…[Read more]

Okay, so with our topic about unrealistic romance, we covered a lot of what you shouldn’t do in a love story.
Now what about what we should do? What makes a love story a good love story, in your opinion?
Do you have any examples from literature of a love story done well?
What are some common steroetypes of love stories? Could they be twisted…[Read more]

Oops… I must have missed the ‘only four times’ rule. Sorry about that. Are there even enough poets on here to make that work, anyway?
But moving on.

Wow, exciting for you, Daeus! I’ll definitely be keeping up with you. I’ve already glanced over several of the works you have up, and I was impressed.
The one thing I would consider adding to your blog, if it’s possible, is a comments option.
As it is, there are two things I noticed that I wanted to point out to you. My inner spelling Nazi is…[Read more]

Hey… Daeus is starting to use LotR references… must be a good sign… 😉
Good topic, Hope. Daeus got a lot of it, but one thing I would mention is that a quick, very effective way to make someone’s speech sound old fashioned is to play with the sentence structure. Reverse it. It’ll still make sense, but it’ll have a very distinct flavor. For…[Read more]

Whoa… what a question. There are so many songs… one I’ve always liked, though, is a piano and cello duet called ‘Winter Wind’ by a group called ‘The Piano Guys’. If you’ve never heard it, look it up on youtube. They’re amazing. The music always seemed to belong in some sort of Dickensian story to me. I’ve written a few of that genre.

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic 1st person or 3rd person? in the forum General Writing Discussions 10 years, 11 months ago
Personally I prefer both reading and writing 3rd person. I like to develop all the characters on an intimate level, and you can’t get that level of character development with 1st person.
You can get good development with 1st person, it’s just you need a LOT more material to do it. You can’t show a simple scene through each character’s POV.…[Read more]

‘To know that Love, and see that Love’
Hm, first I thought this was going to be a nature poem, but why not go with both?
So what do we have so far?‘When Autumn winds excite the leaves
and whisper through the fading grass,
When raindrops tumble off the eaves,
Then, I feel at home. For wind and rain and leaf and tree
speak of Love much greater…[Read more] -

‘For wind and rain and leaf and tree’
This is going to be either a crowning achievement or a crowning mess. Who cares which one? The point is to do it. This is fun!

Yes— exactly. Of course you need some details— give the readers a starting point, and guide them throughout as you would with any other scene, but my point is you don’t have to take every agonizing turn of the rack, every sizzle of the branding iron, or every snap of the lash in slow motion. That is conducive to nothing but stomachaches.
And…[Read more]

Yes. Definitely. Chewy’s body language is very good. In fact it’s probably better he didn’t speak. Then words don’t get in the way of whatever emotion he’s trying to get across.
If he had confessed he was worried about Han out in the freezing snow instead of moaning softly and bowing his head against one of the Falcon’s ladders, we would have had…[Read more] -

Wow, Sarah that’s… that’s… I like that. It’s not exactly a poem, but it’s not exactly anything else. It’s very unique.
The only thing I would suggest has nothing to do with the rhythm of the poem. In fact I’m only nitpicking, so feel free to ignore me. All through the poem I was going, ‘wow, this is great, this is so insightful— I feel like…[Read more]
