I decided to start doing another WIP because quite frankly I don’t have enough characters in my original one to do this…..
So! This story’s theme is what it takes to be a good leader.Captain Manel: He is the father of the main characters fiance. He is loyal to Teren, the MC, only because it will get him what he wants, a foot in the political…[Read more]

You know you are a writer when you snicker over something particularly witty your character has just said, and then congratulate yourself for writing something worth snickering over.

I never before realized that antagonists could technically be good guys…. A whole new vista of storytelling has opened up!
Book One: In The Last Unicorn one of the antagonists is the love interest to Amalthea. He is keeping/distracting her from the story goal, which is to free her people. He is an antagonist who you wouldn’t think of as one at…[Read more]

Thank you Josiah for giving me the impetus I need to make these characters less flat. 🙂
Allie: She is the princess that I have mentioned over and over again and never named. She inspires loyalty in everyone except herself. She doesn’t want to be a princess and would rather be anywhere else than here. She becomes to Brigen the reason why he fights…[Read more] -

I think the foil characters I enjoy reading about the most are the ones who share the same goal and purpose, but are different in a couple ways that really bugs the protagonist. Like in Pride and Prejudice where Elizabeth and her best friend are similar in many ways, but in one area, how to be happy in marriage, they are practically opposites.
It…[Read more] -
Shaina replied to the topic ARCHIVED – Homework for Video 11: Scene to Story Structure in the forum Writing Assignments 7 years, 7 months ago
This story is more of a novella, so trying to find a set of scenes that weren’t key scenes was impossible. Oh well, here we go! I also just realized that my reaction sequences are rather small, looks like they will have to be broadened whenever I get around to editing it.
Scene One:
Brigen and his friend complete the first part of their mission,…[Read more] -

Phew! I definitely think doing this first will help me do the other part of the assignment. This whole section has been a little hard for me to understand, but the homework has helped me to learn how to implement the things I have learned in my own writing.

*pantpantgasp* I made it! This time the homework was hard.
The book I am using this time is The Golden Lamps by Ed Dunlop. It is part of The Terrestria Chronicles.
The theme of the book is that the Kings business is more important than our own business.
The background of these scenes is that the village is in the middle of building a castle to…[Read more] -

The conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist shows another facet of the over all theme. The antagonist’s goal is to live forever, but the theme is that it is better to live once and then die. The antagonist shows another reason why it is better to have a set time to live by how he is willing to do absolutely anything to live forever.…[Read more]

Lets see if I understood the lesson enough to do this right…..
Scene the First:
Action: The main character, Brigen, and his friend find the princess. They realize that she is not what they had expected. They had expected someone strong and ready to lead them into battle. This princess can’t even speak and is small.
Reaction: Brigen wonders if…[Read more] -

Tuck Everlasting chapter 19. I was hoping some of the later chapters would be easier. 😛
I am pretty sure she is using point #8. The protagonist is coming into conflict with the antagonist and his EiL.

@aratrea That does make sense. I can see where the ending would look kind of contrived if I did that. I guess I am going to have to add a couple things to my story. Thank you!

Tuck Everlasting I think is actually Method #4. (of course I chose the crazy one) The choice Winnie makes between living forever and living a normal life is between her story goal and her thematic development.

Okay, I think I got this…. Question, is everything broken up and distributed well? Like is the climax in the right place? I got a little muddled around plot point three.
Inciting Event: The MC (Brigen) is called to his leaders tent for another assignment. When he gets there he gets mad at his old friend and now comrade for bringing up a failure…[Read more]

Shaina replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 7 years, 8 months ago
The way I name characters is that I look at their personality and find a name that fits them. Which is either from the top of my head, my baby name book :), or I make one up if it is fantasy. What I love doing is taking a common name, like Mark, and flip some letters around so that it is still slightly the same name, but is different enough to be…[Read more]

One of my role models is a young mother who has lots of kids, and most of them are boys. Things can be crazy, but no matter what happens she has a joyful spirit. She loves her children and enjoys life and you can see it on her face when she walks into a room. The best way to say it would be that she glows. 🙂

In the book Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens one of the main characters wants to be respectable above all else. Unfortunately, he is in debtors prison. Through a fortunate turn of events he gets out of jail and becomes ‘respectable’ again. In pursuit of this he turns his back on true friendships and does everything in his power to become what…[Read more]
