@dekreel I read most of the Mandie books by Lois Gladys Leppard, and I devoured the old Nancy Drew and Hardy boys books. I also read a lot of historical books like little house on the prairie, and other pioneer type books, though I don’t really remember the titles now, haha.

@leumeister I loooove the name Iridian! My other votes would be for Raphael and Kenneth. 🙂

@dragon-snapper You’ve already gotten me hooked on the character. And I like how Joel finding the fruit seems to initially be a good thing, but turns out to cause a lot of trouble. Good luck writing your story! (you can do it! *claps you on*) 😀

@dekreel I like Christmas stories as well! Especially because winter happens to be my favorite seasons, hehe.

@dragon-snapper This may be too late, but one of my favorite ways to come up with new stories is what @daeus said about taking unsatisfying elements from other stories and figuring out how to change it to be something I would enjoy.
Also, just making lists of my favorite characters/character dynamics is helpful for me because stories normally…[Read more] -

@sam-kowal I know that feeling. It seems like everything I stet out to write grows longer than I planned. (I had a story that I thought would need 15k, but it came out to 50k in the end XD)
@dekreel I had the idea for it because I was listening to Owl City’s Christmas song Humbug. It’s basically about a character having trouble figuring out what…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper Oh wow! That’s cool. You know how to write in dwarvish? Did it take a long time to learn? And I love finding old notebooks. They’re sort of like finding old treasures of memories and ideas 🙂

@dragon-snapper I had this scene planned out in my outline, and if it were a longer project I would probably keep it, but I feel it slows/muddles the story since it’s so short (I’m aiming for 5k) so now I have to figure out how to integrate the important points of the scene into other parts of the story.
And epic music is good for getting the…[Read more] -

@ethryndal I don’t really struggle with developing characters but what you said was helpful for even me! (Especially the last part. I’d never quite looked at it like that.) So thanks 😀

@dragon-snapper Ooh new story ideas are so shiny and fun!
@dekreel *waves* Hiya!I’m thinking I’m gonna try and outline this scene that’s giving me a bit of trouble… *sigh*
I’m working on my first short story ever and so I’m coming against some challenges I’m not used to, haha. -

What @ingridrd said about giving them something unique is very important for me, but that’s also just a stepping stone. I have to be careful not to let their strangeness define them forever (unless of course that’s an important aspect of the character).
Deciding on how you want them to grow through what happens to them over the course of the story…[Read more] -

Something else that might be helpful to keep in mind is making sure you’re being clear when setting a scene about which characters are present (because it might potentially be jarring to transition from 1st person to a scene where the MC isn’t present?). It sounds interesting though! I don’t think I’ve read a book told that way before. 🙂

@waterlily This is something I struggle with too! Writing in limited third makes me feel so detached from the characters, which is hard for me to push through since I’m so character focused when I write. Though I want to learn how to write in deep third to expand beyond what I’m comfortable with now.
I think @dekreel nailed it though! I would…[Read more] -

@dragongeek I’m working on a super hero/fantasy story as well!
Though my cast doesn’t exactly have super powers in the traditional sense. They have stones that grant them magical armor/weaponry, and society treats them much the same as super heroes are treated in fiction. (It’s set in a fantasy world, with modern technology. I basically just…[Read more] -

@waterlily My advice is to ask yourself which is a higher priority to you: finishing the project, or rewriting it to closer match your vision.
I think teaching yourself to push through and finish things is important, but I also know that writing a story you’re unhappy with isn’t fun.
This may not work, but something I’ve tried before is to…[Read more] -
