Sarah Spradlin replied to the topic Is it Possible? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 10 years, 6 months ago
Definitely a really interesting question, Shaina! I’d say the answer to this question, too, (in writing, albeit) is always yes. For me, the real question is usually “Is it possible to do it well?/Do I think I can do this well?” And if that’s the case, then DO IT! Another couple of helpful questions are “Why do I want to do this?/Is it…[Read more]

Sarah Spradlin replied to the topic Book Name in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 10 years, 6 months ago
Jumping back a bit to the “original question,” I’ve always really liked the idea of names as titles (if it fits), and Edwin Brook has a pretty awesome ring to it, so I’d say it fits. 🙂 If not the title of the whole book, definitely like the title of Chapter 1 or the prologue. *nodding*

@Hope — Dudette, that one is pretty deep. I’m sitting here thinking through it (which for me is the sign of a good poem). I always want to leave the reader with something to puzzle out or think on (again, that’s just me. :P) I definitely like poem as a whole. It reads a little bit choppily, but I think that helps to give this impression of two…[Read more]

Sarah Spradlin replied to the topic Queens? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 10 years, 6 months ago
Hi, Jada!
This is a question that I’ve struggled with a lot myself, and it’s one of my ongoing investigations. For me, the answer is yes. The MC in my current WIP is the heir-apparent and will be queen of a nation. So, for me, I think it’s is totally okay and cool to have a queen or princess in your book who leads. I don’t think there’s a problem…[Read more]

If you can do the cinematic things, submit the cinematic things. *nodding* Cinematic things are super cool.

@Tatiana Oh wow! Yeah, that’s a great point. XD Thanks so much for the suggestion! And go for the poetry things! It’s a lot of fun, and if you do free verse, it’s something that doesn’t take a lot of time to do! 😀

@Daeus — Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, lines things are something I like playing around with, but don’t always get it “right.” xD
@Shaina — Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I really like this poem! I would almost play around with capitalization with the “ands” to provide almost a false sense of a broken continuation of the sentence before like an…[Read more]

Hi all!
So, my poetry is so extremely free-verse that it’s almost not poetry. That being said, I’d love to get some thoughts on my style (do you love it, hate it, think it’s a little too crazy, not crazy enough, etc.) and whatever else that catches you eye! Also, feel free to add more stuff here in this quiet little corner of the forum. I love to…[Read more]

99% of men don’t want to cry in front of other people. I don’t think he would be upset at not being able to mourn either.

Is it a good idea to take our world (planet earth, our solar system, our universe, etc.) and fantasize it? Even add other planets inhabited by extraterrestrial life? Is it a good idea to take something we know is fantastical and does not exist and place it in our world for a story?
Are you asking if it is morally okay to add fantasy elements…[Read more]

Are you asking if it is morally okay to add fantasy elements to a story that takes place in our world? If you are concerned about this morally, may I ask why? What are your concerns?

Thanks for the tips, Daeus. I have an… ahem… hypothetical case to present. Just a question, actually. Say a young man (sixteen, almost seventeen) was thrown into command of a tired, demoralized, losing army, while his father (who had been the commander) and his uncle (with whom he is very close) and his sweetheart (enough said) are captives of the…
