@Hope niiiice. And technically your prompt can have anything at all in it so long as it includes the topic… so a magical cell phone that can turn into a sword isn’t too far fetched, if you wanna go that route. 😀

@hope Nice! I like that a lot then. You do a really good job of weaving both Experiments in Living together in a way that, at least on paper, looks like a good, gradual transition.

Okay guys, let’s try something different here. We’ll pick a topic/category and each of us will try to think of something different for that one category, and when we’re out of ideas someone can suggest a new category/topic.
First topic— trains.
My contribution to the topic: The Train from Nowhere was late for the second time in a…[Read more] -

@ethryndal So if I understand you correctly, at the midpoint her change is that she understands that both elves and humans can be either ‘worthy’ or ‘worthless’ instead of putting humans automatically in the ‘worthless’ camp and elves in the ‘worthy’ camp?
@hope Can you also post the Experiments in Living for this? I’m assuming this is different…[Read more]

No love triangles.
That’s all.
Well, generally, try to avoid cliches of the genre if you can. Or twist them and make them new. I haven’t written dystopian or sci-fi myself. Oh, and if you’re into linguistics at all — a dys-topia is a bad place, just any bad place in general. If there was a Greek word for “post-apocalyptic gray concrete…[Read more]

@hope Absolutely! Sometimes I wish that one major event would be enough to change how I live, but unfortunately, that’s not how it works. =P Working a series of events like that into a novel is a fantastic way to replicate that in storytelling.

@bluejay, @sarah-h, @hope, @kate-flournoy, @daeus, @perfect-fifths.
This is a rather long term one, but I’ll have another update in about a month or two.
I’m currently studying for a grade 5 piano exam, coming up in April. I’ve never done a piano exam before, at all, for any grade, so some prayer would be nice. -

@hope I see. Yeah, this gets into the tricky parts of fiction writing where everything isn’t as analyze-able as we might like it to be. =P I could see it as being either a second related EiL, or simply her deciding to expand her current EiL to include more than it did otherwise. In gray areas like this, you should probably go with whatever makes…[Read more]

@hope It seems that you have two character arcs in your story. One, a positive arc on trust. Two, a disillusionment about the sureness of temporal victory. There might be a third one around responsibility (her growing to consider herself responsible for more than just those she loves), but I doubt it because she doesn’t seem to change in that…[Read more]

@hope That’s a great point that hasn’t been brought up yet! Those sorts of instructive moments can definitely change someone. They’re a bit trickier to use in novel form since it’s really easy for that to become a preaching moment, but I think it can be done when you do it in a way that’s true to the instructor’s character. I think I discuss that…[Read more]

@hope That seems like a good character arc–I like it! I’m not completely sure, though, on what distinguishes the beginning experiment from the transitory experiment. Is it just how she applies the experiment, or are the experiments themselves different?

@hope Wait, you’re saying that you don’t want me to include a lot more of me rambling in the polished version? Hmmm… Interesting. 😉 Haha, and yes, backstories are great. Random facts are good too, especially as a means of expressing unique characterization.

@hope Nice work. Like I mentioned with Audrey, you will also want to think about the physical consequences of these experiments along with the mental consequences to really display poetic justice powerfully. so you may want to work on that. Other than that, these look great!

Greetings everyone,
Our friendly KeePer, @Anne-of-Lothlorien, wanted me to announce that she is taking a break from the forum for a while in order to concentrate on her studies and other tasks. Hopefully, she’ll be back, but the break is for an uncertain amount of time. Anway, make sure you say goodbye and wish her the best.
