@kate-flournoy I agree completely. There’s a line I love from a book…I can’t remember if they were talking about assassination or war in general, but one character asked another (who was a Christian) if he had trouble killing people who weren’t saved. The character basically replied to the tenor of ‘if God is going to save them, then He’ll…[Read more]

Another related topic, since we’re back on this thread. Assassinations. Can they ever be right? Assassinations in peacetime on civilians. No. Assassination of leaders. I’d say no…God commands us to obey leaders, even if they are bad. But what about war (I’ve lots of wars in my books…). Again, in war I’d say assassination against civilians is…[Read more]

after all, war is only necessary because of evil, and the object of war is to annihilate that evil. Unless you would class a friend or loved one as evil, war’s ‘permissibles’ would not apply to them, I’m thinking.
Yes, good point. And that is what I figured, I just like bringing up any sort of scenarios I can.
Now you’ve got me wanting t…

So I’ve been thinking about a different angle of this whole ‘what is permissible in war and in defense of others’ type of question. We’ve established earlier that life is given by God and isn’t just something for man to take whenever they wish. Ok. Yes. I agree. However, we don’t live in a perfect world. War does not change what is right and…[Read more]

@bluejay no, I’ve not ready Ella Enchanted, though I’ve seen the movie. *smirks*
@Gabrielle Oh yes, always. Actually, what I tend to do when I’m making drastic changes, is copy the document and archive a copy of it ‘as is’ then go ahead and edit to my heart’s content because I know I can always go back to something and get it if I need it.

@emma-flournoy Yes, you have a point there too. I’m not saying one should include everything. But I’ve seen it done in more than one book…one was an alternate beginning and the other included bits of a character who’d been taken out. In both cases, I agreed it was better the way the author had written it, but at the same time it was fun to see…[Read more]

Hey, @daeus, you’ve never told us that about chocolate! It was all ‘eat raspberries because they’re healthy’. *grabs more chocolate*
Thanks, @Jess. 😉 A fantasy trilogy! That sounds like fun. I’m working on my novellas, a fantasy novel, have several other fantasy novels…and a seven book fantasy series. 😉 I also have a futuristic trilogy I’m…[Read more]

@corissa-maiden-of-praise You’re finally here!!! Welcome to the, umm, wonderfulist writing forum on earth. 😉 Oh, and about the tags, they aren’t always the names you see. If you click on a person’s profile, you’ll see the ‘tagging name’ You’ll memorize most of them eventually. 😉
And married six people? *smirks* I’ve been married two or three…[Read more]

Also, I am aware I’ve not really answered the question, just dissected it more. I’ll be back later, ahem, tomorrow maybe. And I suspect @daeus and @kate-flournoy will be here soon. They like these kinds of questions. 😉

@his-instrument Ah yes, we’ve talked about those points some. But it’s still a hard question, whatever the morally right answer might be. And I know what you mean. I could argue both ways for the scenario above too. The death is giving one’s life for their country. And no one claims there is anything wrong in risking death for something like that,…[Read more]

@jess Welcome to the bestiest place on the internet! Hurray! I said it first (it’s kind of a weird competition around here).
And hurray for fantasy. I love writing fantasy. Are you working on anything right now?

Resurrecting this topic for a bit anyway, because I’ve been thinking about a mystery I watched awhile back. The character who died is assumed to have committed suicide. The Detective thinks he was murdered. In the end, they discover it was actually part of a government spy deal. Basically, the man who died was already dying from some sickness. His…[Read more]

Don’t be afraid to cut and delete and take out scenes completely. *sighs* It’s so hard sometimes. I’ve had to cut scenes I love, and there’s probably more I’ll need to cut. But if it’s not moving along the story in some way, cut it. And there’s no need to picture it as a complete loss, because not only will the story be tighter, but you’re just…[Read more]

So, @daeus and @anna-bria, this is what I have now. I like most of it, I’m just not sure about the final line in the first and third stanza. The line in the third stanza, by the way, needs to hold the idea that the nation will be destroyed if the victor (from the line before) doesn’t unite the countries.
Ancient sign, bitter fate,
Scar and oath…[Read more] -

*gasp* You’ve got to read Lord of the Rings, @anna-brie! They are so good!
I had Steelheart from the library, but returned it because I didn’t have time to read it. I might pick it back up again sometime. But the next book on my list are the Inkheart trilogy. Joy is reading them and she really likes them.

I’ve written a prophecy for a book of mine and, since poetry is not my strong point, I decided I’d post it here and see what you guys thought, and if you had any suggestions:
Ancient sign, bitter fate,
Scar and oath and quest;
Revealing name brought to light
Power from destroyer wrest.Ancient weapon, bitter foe,
Shield and spear and…[Read more] -

@kate-flournoy I’ve read Lord of the Flies awhile ago, as well as Fahrenheit 451 (I need to read that one again) and The Christmas Carol…several times.
As anyone read any fantasy books by Brandon Sanderson. I’m currently reading Elantris. It’s fascinating so far.
