@kate-flournoy, Ah! Thank you for clearing that up! I was getting confused between personal character goals and the main story. So now that I think about it, in my WIP the main story goal is to defeat the bad guys, like you said, but the MC’s goal is to find love. The MC is an orphan, and she’s had a pretty bad life so far…so her goal is to…[Read more]

@hope, I’m not sure if this is what you’re thinking, but here’s an idea: when the battle between the MC and the villain is over and the villain’s men find out that their leader is dead, they could just run. That’s usually what happens at the end of battles…the men are really fighting for their leader, and when the leader’s gone, they’ve got no…[Read more]

Jesus, Jesus,
You saved me from death.
Why? Why me?
I’m sinful.
I’m broken.
I’m awful.
I make the wrong choices.
There is no good in me.
But still you love me!
But still you pursue me!
You took the cross,
You carried it for the world.
You were tortured,
Humiliated,
For the world,
For me.
Then you rose,
Victorious,
From the grave,
You came alive…[Read more] -

@everyone, Happy Good Friday! I mean, it’s not really happy, but anyway…
I’m watching the Passion of the Christ tonight to remind myself that today is more than just another day. -

The conflict is in reaching the goal, not the goal itself.
@kate-flournoy, yeah, that’s what I was trying to say, but you said it better. 😉 😛
Yes, character conflict is quite interesting. In the novel I’m working on with my sister (@ingridrd), we use some of that (MC and a snobby girl [aka Sheryn Slade] are always at each other’s throats).…[Read more] -

“This is really weird, introducing myself to you. Okay,” he sucks in a deep breath. “I’m Gavin Frensky.”
Gavin Frensky. The name sounds familiar…like someone I dreamed about but whom I didn’t know personally. I stare at Gavin, unable to tear my gaze away. “How old are you, Gavin?”
“I’m 17.”
Seventeen. For some reason, seventeen doesn’t seem…[Read more] -

Let me try that again… for some reason I switched to past tense.
“Who are you?” I manage to ask him.
“Someone who knows why you’re here,” the man answers.
I can’t stop staring at the man. There’s something unusual about him that I can’t put my finger on… -

Hello, everyone!
The other day, I was reading in this novel book I own that good conflict is made up of M + G + O. In other words, the MC + his/her Goal + the Opposition to that goal = Conflict. I thought this might be an interesting topic to discuss with you all. So what are your thoughts about this? And how do you create good conflict in your novels?

…”Uh,” I pause, trying to remember any “ideas” I might have had before I passed out. The funny thing is, I’ve never met these people before in my life. How could they possibly know who I am?
The red-headed man glares at me again and waits expectantly for me to speak. When I say nothing, he growls, “Tell us about your idea to save the world.…[Read more] -

Ooo, I like it @zoe-wingfeather! Like other people noted, I would watch out for info-dumping. For example, the writing in bold below, to me is a bit info-dump-ey…I struggle with the same thing, by the way. 🙂
I sigh. Work is so boring. I’m a secretary for a big computer company, and pretty much all I do all day is file papers.
The story is r…[Read more]

“Ashlynn!” a voice shouts from behind. “Watch out for-” I’m knocked unconscious before the voice can finish it’s sentence.
Maybe here you could describe how the character was knocked unconscious more…for example, you could say, “I felt something hard strike the back of my head, and everything went black.” Or something like that. 🙂

@rolena-hatfield, It is a lot of fun. We actually have performances for the True Story of the Three Little Pigs this week! 😀
My favorite musicals are Les Miserables and Wicked. Do you have a favorite musical/show? Ooo, Mary Poppins! That sounds like fun. 🙂 - Load More

Whoa! Greta, that’s a great poem. I really like it. 😀
