Sarah Spradlin replied to the topic Is it Possible? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 9 years, 1 month ago
Definitely a really interesting question, Shaina! I’d say the answer to this question, too, (in writing, albeit) is always yes. For me, the real question is usually “Is it possible to do it well?/Do I think I can do this well?” And if that’s the case, then DO IT! Another couple of helpful questions are “Why do I want to do this?/Is it…[Read more]

Jumping back a bit to the “original question,” I’ve always really liked the idea of names as titles (if it fits), and Edwin Brook has a pretty awesome ring to it, so I’d say it fits. 🙂 If not the title of the whole book, definitely like the title of Chapter 1 or the prologue. *nodding*

@Hope — Dudette, that one is pretty deep. I’m sitting here thinking through it (which for me is the sign of a good poem). I always want to leave the reader with something to puzzle out or think on (again, that’s just me. :P) I definitely like poem as a whole. It reads a little bit choppily, but I think that helps to give this impression of two…[Read more]

Sarah Spradlin replied to the topic Queens? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 9 years, 1 month ago
Hi, Jada!
This is a question that I’ve struggled with a lot myself, and it’s one of my ongoing investigations. For me, the answer is yes. The MC in my current WIP is the heir-apparent and will be queen of a nation. So, for me, I think it’s is totally okay and cool to have a queen or princess in your book who leads. I don’t think there’s a problem…[Read more]

If you can do the cinematic things, submit the cinematic things. *nodding* Cinematic things are super cool.

@Tatiana Oh wow! Yeah, that’s a great point. XD Thanks so much for the suggestion! And go for the poetry things! It’s a lot of fun, and if you do free verse, it’s something that doesn’t take a lot of time to do! 😀

@Daeus — Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, lines things are something I like playing around with, but don’t always get it “right.” xD
@Shaina — Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I really like this poem! I would almost play around with capitalization with the “ands” to provide almost a false sense of a broken continuation of the sentence before like an…[Read more]

Hi all!
So, my poetry is so extremely free-verse that it’s almost not poetry. That being said, I’d love to get some thoughts on my style (do you love it, hate it, think it’s a little too crazy, not crazy enough, etc.) and whatever else that catches you eye! Also, feel free to add more stuff here in this quiet little corner of the forum. I love to…[Read more]

Hope,
I watched Epic (and shamelessly enjoyed it!) and loved the sound track! I’ve found that it has been helpful for when I’m writing more from the good guy’s perspective while they’re building up to something or working together to solve a problem. 🙂

Hey, dudette!
This is actually something I’ve been struggling with myself, and I’m afraid I don’t really have a great answer. That being said, it never hurts to sketch out your world map. Even if no one else ever sees it, it’s helpful for when you’re writing. So, I’d say at least to start out, try and freehand a general idea of the map and then…[Read more]

Hi all! Oooo! I love Lord of the Rings, too! 🙂 And the Chronicles of Narnia!! Favorite from LotR is definitely Return of the King. All of the strings are tied up and the story comes to its grand finale in it. 😀
As far as picking favorite books goes– it was tortuous to choose just one until last year when I read “This Present Darkness” by Frank…[Read more]

Hrmmm… what helped me when I was writing younger audience sort of kids books was I thought like they might think. Not all the time, mind you, but think about what they now and what they love and play off that.
