Kate Flournoy started the topic The everpesent Rings of Power in the forum Fantasy 11 years, 2 months ago
Hey guys, have any of you ever noticed that most fantasy stories seem to utilize rings, rings and more rings as carriers of power, as symbols of the ultimate in magical majesty? Why is this, do you think? Is there a reason, in your opinion? Does there have to be a reason? What do you think about it? Let’s brainstorm and see if we can’t come up…[Read more]

Remind me, what’s dystopian again? Is it the genre where the government basically has control of everything? Just curious, and couldn’t remember.
That’s an intriguing point you made about characters being more likeable if they are closer to perfect. I can definitely see where you are coming from, but how far would you carry that? Personally, I…[Read more] -

I’ve not read a ton of romance novels (none, in fact, unless you count Austen and some of her contemporaries) but I’ve read too many stories to count that have love stories in them. And thus far, I have not encountered the pine needles and cedar shavings thing. Lucky me, right?
Now, I write fantasy, so a lot of my thought process works towards…[Read more] -

Hannah…I believe it, about the Kane Chronicles, I mean. I’m reading the Heroes of Olympus series right now, but it isn’t as good as the Percy Jackson series. The books are too long. Don’t get me wrong, I love long books, but one thing after another seems to happen and yet it takes too long for anything to happen. And Rick Riordan seems to take…[Read more]

Florida! That’s nothing like Ohio, let alone the Hocking Hills! 🙂
I’m glad to be on this forum. -

Hm… Edwin Brook. The name sounds pleasing to the ear, but to me it does not sound particularly dramatic. (Which you may have done on purpose, for all I know— maybe he’s not a dramatic character).
The name definitely brings an image to mind— I’m seeing a tall young man with dark brown hair, somewhat hazel-ish eyes, and a quiet, dignified…[Read more] -

Late 1600s – early 1700s. More renaissance really.

I don’t think something which is a sin…lying, in this case (setting aside, for the moment, different views about lying/spying) is somehow right because it is an unbeliever/unrighteous person performing the action. But it is true their punishment might not be as great as someone who knows it is wrong and does it anyway. In Luke 12:47-48, Jesus…[Read more]

Hi Reagan,
We are doing fabulously, like always. I’m really enjoying the cool summer this year;)
How’s Florida? Have you gone crocodile hunting yet?
This is a great site. The only problem with it is I will sometimes choose seeing how things are going on over here above actually writing. Oh well though. Quality writing is better than quantity writing.

This isn’t exactly a book idea, but it is an idea for a book title. I’ve got a name I am planing to use for my novel, but first I want to check with the rest of you to make sure you have the same impression of it as I did. I want to call it “Edwin Brook”. This is the alias of my main character by which he will go for most of the book. I want to…[Read more]

Haha, so in other words, ‘I’m starting to grow a tad bit weary of wrangling over this topic and would appreciate it if someone would start a new one’. I feel for you, believe me.
But allow me to clarify one thing: my question was not does God use such people, since duh, obviously He does, but is it somehow okay (morally right) for them to lie…[Read more] -

Glad to have you on the forum!

Hi Kate!
It is so cool you live in the Hocking Hills! My family had been looking to move there for a long time (I grew up in central Ohio), but then 10 months ago we moved to Florida. Haha! We did rent a cabin one time at Burr Oak State Park though.
Glad to have you on the forum!

No typos, victory! Seriously, I stopped studying spelling at seven and have only been improving by seeing the corrections on spell check a million times in a row.
Does God permit unrighteous people to do what righteous people cannot, so that His will may be fulfilled? Well, it would appear so. That’s all I have to say.
Thanks for the great discussion.

I really should have done this a long time ago, but here is my introductory post. Or semi-introductory… or something like that.
But anyway, I am a sixteen year old homeschooled girl who goes by the name of Kate. My favorite genre to write is fantasy, hands down, though I have done a few historical fiction novels that I’m pretty happy with. I…[Read more] -

Oh boy, and here I was thinking all along that we were mainly trying to determine whether spying was right, as it is a form of deception! Well, that clears up a lot. What other ways are there to lie in war? I can’t think of any off the top of my head.
Nevertheless, Daeus, some of the points you made above in your last really long comment (I am…[Read more] -

Hello Hope,
I think there can be such a distinction. Granted many spies doubtless lie, but I don’t think this is a necessity of spying. Often times when a system (like spying) relies on something we might consider immoral, such as lying, it is not because it is necessary, but because it has become ingrained in the tradition of the practice. It is…[Read more]

To Daeus…I understand what you are saying about murder/killing in war as well as stealing/taking spoil of war. So I guess what it comes down to is ‘is there any such differentiation between lying and something like spying’? Points for both sides about lying to protect someone else or for self-defense have been listed above. I, myself, do not…[Read more]
