Hope Ann replied to the topic The Depths of Description in the forum General Writing Discussions 11 years, 1 month ago
I like to have basic descriptions of the setting, but I don’t like reading paragraph long descriptions. I try to weave in the surroundings with action of some kind and keep the descriptions fairly brief unless the object or place is important.

I don’t know how that would work, though it’s an interesting idea. You could kind of do it if it was a story inside a story sort of deal. Otherwise…I’m not sure. But you can do almost anything with writing. 🙂

Question with regards to fantasy exclamations. I have an allegorical world, with the ‘Great King’ and His Son the Prince and all of that. One exclamation I have used, and which I’m not completely sure about, is ‘by the Prince’. It isn’t swearing in our language of course, but if you used the English equivalent, it could be considered taking God’s…[Read more]

Generally, I’d say only when it’s important to the story or you’re establishing a setting. You’ll be seeing the story through the characters’ eyes, so as far as nature and surroundings descriptions, only observe when your character is observing.
However, descriptions of emotions and the characters themselves is another topic altogether…. I’ll…[Read more] -

I think it would be rather limiting as far as character development. You can’t develop the main character, because it’s the reader and the reader will be different people.
However, you could teach lessons through that sort of storytelling… hmm…
Not sure. I’ve had that thought before, hearing about second person. I wonder if there are any…[Read more] -

This forum is like a graveyard. Most of us must still be recuperating from our ‘Zombies and Vampires’ marathon.
Anyway… this is no such moral and deep discussion to call out the masses again, but I was wondering… what do all you other crazy word-wielders out there think of description? According to Robert L. Stevenson, ‘there is nothing so…[Read more] -

@Rosey. I’ll do that. 😀 -

I’d say just put yourself in the shoes of the reader. Would you be okay reading this, or would it make you uncomfortable?
The golden rule comes in handy a lot of the time in writing. 😉 -

Matthew Christian Harding is the author. And tell me when you check them out when your eighty three and we old folks can have book discussions together. 😉@Hope
EXACTLY. The “coming to grips with it tool is really powerful. It shows it as a part of the character’s journey that way and they’ll be a better person because of it. It’s an…[Read more] -

Oh and by the way, Hope, I think the genre you were looking for would probably be speculative fiction.

Totally get what you mean about the drone thing, Hope! It can be somewhat difficult to just mention casually that the daily drone delivery of donuts is waiting on the front doorstep— offhandedly enough that the reader will subconsciously think ‘Oh yeah. The drone delivery. Sure. Life as normal’, instead of ‘What on earth?!? How can a drone…[Read more]

Exactly. Drinking is not the bad thing— it’s drunkenness. While I have never tasted any kind of alcoholic drink (except a nasty sip of Sangria for a cold) I am perfectly okay with having my fantasy characters drink wine, or ale, or mead, because that is what they drank in those cultures and places where the water was bad, and there was no such…[Read more]

Good idea with the drone thing … so good in fact that it is already being pursued. Amazon, FedEx, and some others are working on incorporating drones into their delivery service. I’m not sure if they will actually deliver right to your door, but they might.

A common way of ‘killing’ a character who comes back later is to have them ‘dead’ but the body is unrecognizable or something like that. The only thing is that that has been used enough that if I see a dead character who is unrecognizable, I immediately make a mental note that he/she isn’t dead. There would need to be a good reason the body was…[Read more]

I personally do not drink, though at the same time I don’t think it is a sin. Drunkenness, however, is condemned in the Bible. That being said, in my fantasy stories character do drink wine or water mixed with wine simply because that is what people used to drink culturally. But I don’t think I’d have a character in a modern story drink a beer if…[Read more]

I love fantasy and Captain America. Anyway…
I’m writing a futuristic fiction book right now; I’m not sure if it would be science fiction or not. I suppose that is probably what it would be categorized as at a library. Anyway, one thing I’ve thought of are drones; small flying things that can deliver things right to your door…from a fresh…[Read more]

I don’t write historical fiction, but I write fantasy and base my worlds off a mix of ancient and medieval culture…I use both in my writing though I read more about ancient history.

AAGGHH! NOT GENETICS! Talk about confusing. But then, I haven’t studied biology in depth yet either. 😛
Okay. Nuclear stuff. You have an atom. No— wait. You… do you know… have you studied…? Hang on. Right. I started wrong. Do you know what a cell is? Of course you do. So we have this cell— the smallest unit of life, right? Or actually…[Read more] -
