So, recently I went through all 23 of the Tintin comic books and counted exactly how many times he got knocked out. And, including all of the ways he was rendered unconscious (knockout gas, chloroform, getting shot, almost drowning, and the ever popular whack on the head) it numbered to about 60 times.
60.
This is one guy in a 23 book series.
So,…[Read more] -

I really couldn’t tell that you made any effort whatsoever to make your posts entertaining, Ezra… so I don’t know why the grin starts into my eyes the moment I see your profile picture on a new thread. It must just be some weird psychological gimmick.
Hmmm… hypocrisy. I’m probably guilty of the same thing in some respects! It’s so much…[Read more]

Its not your duty to protect the next generation’s rights (except by respecting them yourself), its the government’s. It is however your duty to protect those who are wrongfully attacked by government oppression. Sometimes you must go willingly to prison, but there is no shame in escape. It can be strategic. Sometimes you need to kidnap Martin…[Read more]

Oh, your arguing for spread out description. Yes, I would agree. A little bit here and there is more likely to add to the mood than take away from it. Still I think there are times when great detail is necessary and these times aren’t always when you need to build an intense scenario sometimes a detailed description of some random village your…[Read more]

Love Studio C. 🙂 Anyway, I see what you are saying about moral absolutes. We can’t just rebel because we don’t like what is going on in the government.
At the same time, I would argue that (here in America, anyway, and at this current time) a citizens duty is a bit different than in Roman times. In Roman times, you simply obeyed. Now, we…[Read more]

Rebellion is, of all combat, the most iffy, but I think it can be done well. The most necessary element is a clear mission. The best “rebellion” is where the resistant party recognizes a new political authority as supreme. Think of the American revolution (which by the way wasn’t really a revolution). The Americans were not technically in…[Read more]

That’s strange. I received the impression of two explorers in a tropical jungle, nothing even close to a white auditorium with some pessimistic campers. That being said, is the description Ezra gave enough? It might be, but probably not. The reason I can’t give a definite answer is because I have no context. The reader (apparently with some…[Read more]

To further clarify my thoughts above (because I was in a hurry when I wrote it) how does a Christian’s duty to obey the leader’s set in place by God, and a citizen’s duty to protect the nation’s freedoms for the next generation fit. I’m especially thinking about here in America, where the government is by the people, and what would happen if (like…[Read more]

Yep. He got it. Short and sweet.
But I’ll add a few more detailed thoughts. A government can command a person to sin without sticking a gun under his nose and saying ‘bow down to that idol or I’ll blow your brains out’. If a Christian sees a minority group being persecuted, (take for example a slave trade, or antisemitism) they are supposed to…[Read more]

Hm. Good points. I can definitely see where you are coming from. I agree, just because I (it was me who said that haha) as the writer have an incredibly detailed image does not mean that the reader will necessarily be interested. You’re right. We need to keep that in mind.
That being said…
The image I’m getting from reading your little…[Read more] -

In a book I am currently writing, there is an oppressive government and a rebellion ends up beginning…the Christians (who are persecuted) don’t start it, but they are a big part of it. What are your views of a Christian’s place in war or rebellion. I believe it is fine for a Christian to fight in a war if he is needed, but what about rebellions?…[Read more]

Oh yes. The poetic description. LOVE IT.
One thing I have found that helps with poeticness (not a word… hm… poesy?) is characterization. No— not having to do with actual characters! >D But take the thing you are describing and give it a personality. ‘The leaves blew and swirled across the courtyard, filling the cool air with a soft, dry…[Read more] -

When the reader can taste the bread, and the bread tastes bad, you have gone too far. Ok, maybe it is a bit more complicated than that. For myself, I enjoy vivid descriptions, but let’s face it, you can go overboard. What is overboard? Ah, that depends. I think it can actually be good to spend a paragraph or even two in description, as long as the…[Read more]

Yeah, I don’t like reading paragraphs of nothing but description either. Or rather I like it myself, but not many people do, and I am not writing my books so only I can read them. If only!
But sometimes I have such a strong image in my mind that it calls for a whole paragraph, and though I try to avoid those scenarios, one way to spice them up if…[Read more] -

Hm… good question. Permit me to present my opinion… reading through the Old Testament, I find a lot of instances where the phrase ‘as the Lord lives’ is used. It is not a common, everyday exclamation, but is used only when a very solemn oath or promise is spoken. I think such exclamations can be misused, as can every exclamation according to…[Read more]
